How to write a well written paragraph?

Academic writing implies well structured paragraphs

Parts of a paragraph:

Topic sentence ( What are you writing about).

Body: It is the heart of your paragraph, In this section

you can find all the supporting details and arguments for
the topic sentence. This can be ordered in two different
ways, one is by order of importance and the other way is
by chronology( It refers to the ordering of events).

Closing sentence: The closing sentence has two

functions, one is to restate the topic sentence but in a
different way and the other function is to give the
audience time to think about the topic.

Paragraph

In terms of the way it looks:

Indent or skip a line (not both).

One central idea in one paragraph- thesis statement.

In terms of content:
 All other ideas must directly relate to the main idea.
Any length.
Details - establish why is it important/reason/examples.

In terms of flow:

There must be bridges (sentence connects to sentence-

paragraph connects to paragraph).

Introduction to Academic Writing

You will be asked to produce a number of different

assignments, depending on your subject, these might include:

Essays
Reports
Presentations
Reflective pieces
Summaries
Annotated bibliographies.

Steps for successful writing:

Understand what is expected of you.

Read your module handbooks ( crucial to understand the
assignment criteria).
Check the learning outcomes.
Show a range of arguments.
 Re-read and edit your work (editing helps you to notice
where clarity is needed).
Don't forget to proofread (you could lose marks for basic
error and typos).

An effective assignment:

Shows you understand the learning outcomes.

Shows you have interpreted and answered the question.
Is well structured with sentences and paragraphs that link
logically.
Uses several theories and examples to create a discussion
of the topic.
Is referenced correctly in the style of your subject.
Uses formal language with correct grammar, punctuation
and spelling.
