Problem statement

Singapore is facing global warming now and my friends and I would like to promot
e awareness among teenager and young children that saving the Earth is our job a
nd if we do not save the Earth, it will be destroyed one day.
Introduction/Objective
We decided to choose this subject because, like many, we are the type that loves
the green. We want to influence more people to be more eco-friendly. We have al
ways loved the nature and finds the human beings are doing too much damage to th
e Earth. Despite being taught of how to save the Earth, many did not follow the
ways to do so. My friends and I thought about finding out who really bothered do
ing a part to save the earth. Being concerned about the Earth, my friends and i
felt that this topic is very meaningful.
Many have never taken care of Earth. Instead, they have been hurting it, leaving
scars on Earth. Scars cannot be recovered. For example, the Ozone layer has bee
n badly damaged by human activities and Ozone layer cannot return to what it was
if it is continuously depleting. This will in turn allow UV-light to pass throu
gh and harm us. For it to heal, we must avoid releasing free radical catalysts i
nto the atmosphere. A small group of us won’t change the earth. We need to influ
ence more people by bringing out a presentation that is good enough to let the p
eople start to help out. My group wanted to use this great opportunity to gradua
lly teach the others the simple ways to help Earth. It is not hard at all to con
tribute to the earth. Earth is our home; we cannot just let it die out.
Recycling, Reusing, and Reducing. It is just that we humans are just too lazy, o
r that we humans just belittled our impact towards the Earth. Now, Earth is alre
ady getting hotter and hotter. My friends and I have always loved the weather be
ing cooling. Over just a few years, the temperature have increased a lot. We jus
t think that we shouldn’t neglect the Earth. We are responsible for our home. We
can’t just panic after something serious happens to our home. Our mission is no
t just to complete this project nicely, but to bring out the message “Save the E
arth “again, to everyone!

Background Research/Literature Review

Researches have shown that recycling rate in Singapore is increasing. The recycl
ing rate for Singapore is 57%. In 2000, only 1 857 300 tonnes of wastes were rec
ycled while in 2009, 3 485 200 tonnes of waste were recycled. The recycling rate
has increased by a tremendous 90% in 2009 as compared to 2000. In contrast, fro
m 2 797 300 tonnes of waste disposed, the amount of waste disposed dropped to 2
628 900 tonnes. Hence, the amount of wastes disposed has decreased by 5% in 2009
as compared to 2000. There is also more than 1500 recycling bins in Singapore w
hich makes it easier and more convenient to dispose recyclable wastes.

Methodology and Data Collected

We collect the results of the survey by using surveymonkey and facebook to surve
y people on how they feel about recycling and saving the Earth. We also went bac
k to our primary schools to survey the young children there so that the results
will be less bias. For example, our first question in the survey is that if ther
e is a recycle bin 100m away, rubbish bin 30m away, will they throw the recyclab
le material into the recycle bin, the rubbish bin or just throw it on the floor.
This helps to find out whether people are trying to save the Earth or just does
not care about the Earth.
Q. The act of recycling will help the environment in one way of another. Explain
why or why not.
A.
1) Recycling? No one is doing it!
2) If we don t recycle, we will lose the greenery in the future.
3) Save more resources.
€4) If people start to recycle, there will not be so much air pollution where ru
bbish is burnt. If we do not recycle, the environment will be affected by pollut
ion.
5) It will help to save the Earth
6) I agree because every little bit from everyone would help the environment in
one way or another.
When we recycle, we reduce the amount of waste. Therefore, we are helping the en
vironment.
7) Help to reduce carbon dioxide emission.
8) Even if we recycle, it is not much use. We still need to save the earth by re
using and reducing.
9) If we do not recycle, the earth will be gone.
10) If we all help the earth by recycling, our mother earth will eventually reco
vers from global warming.
11) If mankind does not take action and start recycling or going green, more env
ironmental issues will pop out.
12) I agree. If we do not recycle, the plastic we all throw away will be melted
in the end and will cause air pollution.
13) Recycling help us reduce the amount of waste produced. With lesser amount of
waste produce, the lesser the amount of energy is wasted on clearing the waste.
In this way, excessive greenhouse gases and toxic chemical substances like Diox
in will not be released into the stratosphere to break down ozone particles. Thu
s further global warming can be prevented. This is how the act of recycling will
affect the environment one way or another.
14) Recycling helps us reducing the amount of waste produced. With lesser amount
of waste produce, the lesser the amount of energy is wasted on clearing the was
te. In this way, excessive greenhouse gases and toxic chemical substances like D
ioxin will not be released into the stratosphere to break down ozone particles.
Thus further global warming can be prevented. This is how the act of recycling w
ill affect the environment one way or another.
15) If we don’t recycle, we will accumulate non-biodegradable stuff and this wil
l further encourage global warming
16) There are only limited resources on earth, which will run out someday. There
fore if we all recycle, we will preserve our resources and make them last for a
longer period of time, thus helping the environment to thrive.
17) When we recycle, it reduces the number of waste produce and hence, it helps
to save the environment.
18) Even if I recycle, other people will not recycle, so what s the point?
19) I agree that the act of recycling will affect the environment. When more thi
ngs are recycled, less raw materials will be needed to produce things
20) Recycling is important, but if we can just reduce rubbish and reuse them in
the first place, there is no need for recycling!
21) If we don t recycle, the earth will die.
22) If we do not recycle, we ll generate a lot of waste. It ll pollute our envir
onment.
23) By recycling we will save the Earth as less material are needed and less tre
es will be cut down.
24) If people are more considerate and recycle rubbish, this earth will be a nic
e place to live in.
25) It takes a lot of energy to sort out masses of rubbish. So, if one can take
the initiative to sort it out from the start, there would be less work for machi
nes and save energy.
26) If we do not recycle, trees will be cut down and animals home are gone and t
hey can go nowhere. Thus, endangered animals will slowly become extinct.
Analysis and Discussion

Conclusion
Most Singapore students are aware of the importance of recycling but they do not
put it into action. The survey results we have gotten shows that students are e
ither lazy or feels that recycling is useless. In order to make more students aw
are of the importance of recycling, schools should organise talks about the 3Rs.
Parents should also set a good example by recycling themselves and teach the ch
ildren to recycle.
Most importantly, people should apply all 3Rs, reduce, reuse and recycle in thei
r daily lives. Statistics have shown that although the recycling rates of Singap
ore have increased, amount of wastes have also increased by 31%. This shows that
people did not really apply the other 2Rs in their daily lives.

Limitations
In this project, we have done quite a lot of research. We have also spent a lot
of time gathering the survey results. This project is beneficial for all of us a
s this project let us learn a lot of things. First, we learnt about teamwork. Wi
thout teamwork, this project will be a failure. In the process of making the pro
ject, everyone have different idea and opinions. With different opinions, we wil
l have to understand each other and pick out the idea which is the best.
We also leant about time planning. Everyone have different CCA and tuition times
and have to divide the workload as we cannot meet up We could have done somethi
ng to promote awareness of the 3Rs in school. We can only meet up during the hol
idays as our CCA time all clash together. Thus, we have to do everything at home
and everything is not discussed properly and thus, the quality of our work is c
ompromised.

Contributions to the Wider Community

Through this project, we hope that more people will be aware of the importance o
f recycling and hopefully recycle in their daily life.
