1.1] Explain stress and strain.

1.7] A steel bar 20 mm in diameter is enclosed in a brass tube of 25 mm external
diameter and 2 mm thick. Assuming the modular ratio is 2. Determine
stresses in steel and brass of composite section which is subjected to an axial
compressive force 50 KN. Assume Esteel= 200 GPa find also change in length of
compressive section
1.8] Determine the change in length and thickness of steel bar which is 4m long,
30 mm wide and 20 mm thick subjected to an axial pull of 30 KN in the
direction of its length. E = 2105 N/mm2 and Poissons ratio =0.3

Unit- 02 Torsion & Shear force & Bending moment
2.1] State the assumptions made in torsion of shaft.
2.2] A hollow shaft of a 25 mm outside diameter and 20 mm inside diameter is
subjected to a torque of 50 Nm. Find the shear stresses at the outside and
inside diameter of the shaft.
2.3] A solid circular shaft transmits 75 KW at 200 rpm. Calculate the shaft
diameter, if the twist in the shaft is not to exceed 1in 2 m of shaft and the
shearing stress is limited to 50 N/ mm2. Assume G= 105 N/mm2
2.4] What is beam? Explain types of beam.
2.5] Explain sagging and hogging moment
2.6] A cantilever length of 2 m carries uniformly distributed load of 1 KN/ m run
over the length of 1.5 m from the free end. Draw the SFD and BMD for beam.
2.7] A simply supported beam of 6 m, carries point load of 3 KN and 6 KN at
distances of 2 m and 4 m from left end. Draw the SFD and BMD for beam.

Unit- 03 Stresses in beams
3.1] State the assumptions made in theory of simple bending.
3.2] Explain the terms neutral axis, section modulus and moment of resistance.
3.3] The cross section of SS beam is shown in fig. 3.1. The beam carries a load P= 10 KN. Its self-
weight is 3.5 KN/ m. Calculate the bending stress at section a-a. Show stress distribution

3.4] A cast iron beam of T- section , 8m long is simply supported at its ends. It carries a UDL of
1.5 KN/m over entire lengthy. Determine the bending stress and show it graphically. Flange
dimensions are 100 mm 20 mm and web dimensions are 120 mm 20 mm.

3.5] A C.I beam is of I- section. The beam is freely on a span of 5 m. If the tensile stress is not to
exceed 20 N/ mm2. Find the safe UDL which the beam can carry. Find also the maximum
compressive stress.

Top flange: 80 mm 20 mm
Web: 20 mm 200 mm
Bottom flange: 160 mm 40 mm

3.6] A beam has I- section with upper flange 80 mm 40 mm, web 120 mm 20 mm and lower
flange 160 mm 40 mm. if tensile stress is not to exceed 30 N/mm2 and compressive stress
is not to exceed 90 N/mm2, what maximum UDL the beam can carry over a simply
supported span of 6 m. if larger flange is to be in tension.

Unit- 04 Principal stresses and strains
4.1] At a point in a strained material the principal stresses are 100 N/ mm2 tensile and 60 N/ mm2
compressive. Determine normal, shear and resultant stress on a plane inclined to 50 to the
axis of major principal stress. Also determine the maximum shear stress at a point.
4.2] A two dimensional stress condition at a point in a strained material is shown in fig. (a) The
magnitude of the resultant stress on face AB is not known. Determine the principal planes
and the corresponding planes and draw a sketch showing them.
4.3] On a mild steel plate, a circle of diameter 50 mm is drawn before the plate is stresses as shown
in fig. (b). Find the lengths of the major and minor axes of an ellipse formed as a result of the
deformation of the circle marked. Take E= 2 105 N/mm2 and = 0.25

4.4] At a point of a machine component the stresses are 86 MPa (tensile in x direction) and 104
MPa (compressive in y-direction). Find by Mohrs circle method, the intensities of normal,
shear and resultant stresses on a plane whose normal is at an angle of 120 with the x-axis .
Also determine the maximum shear stress in the component
4.5] A point in a machine member is subjected to the tensile stresses on two mutually
perpendicular planes of 110 MPa and 60 MPa. Determine
i. Principal stresses and orientations of their planes
ii. Maximum and minimum shear stresses and orientations of their planes
iii. Stresses acting on a plane whose normal are at an angle of 30 with respect to x- axis.
4.6] At a point in a strained material, the principal stresses are 200 N/ mm2 and 80 N/mm2, both
tensile. Locate graphically the planes for which the resultant stress is inclined at 15 to the
normal. Find also this resultant stress. Also locate the planes for which the obliquity of
resultant stress is maximum.
4.7] List the different theories of elastic failure and explain any two.

Unit- 05 Deflections of beam
5.1] Derive a relation of slope and deflection of cantilever beam of length L
5.2] A cantilever beam of length 3 m is carrying a UDL of w KN/m. Assuming
rectangular cross section with depth d equal to twice the width b,
determine
the dimensions of beam, so that vertical deflection at the free end does not
exceed 8 mm. Take maximum bending stress = 100 MPa and E = 200 GPa.
5.3] A beam is 3 m long simply supported at its ends, is carrying point load W at
its centre. If slope at the ends of the beam should not exceed 1 , find the
deflection at the centre of the beam

6.1] What is a column? What is a strut?
6.2] Explain slenderness ratio
