4. Catalog Description
This course is an introduction to Windows 2008 Server and R2 Server. In this course students will acquire an understanding and working
knowledge of the client-server model, domains, server load and configuration, physical networks and how a Windows 2008 network is
administrated. They will also learn how to install, operate, manage, and secure a Windows 2008 Network. This course utilizes Microsoft Official
Curriculum and maps directly to the Microsoft Windows Server 2008, Server Administration- Exam 70-646.

Outcomes

-Discuss Windows 2008 server features, basic requirements, and benefits.

- Automated server deployment.

-Plan infrastructure services and server roles.

-Discuss licensing of Windows 2008 server and network.

-Understand Authentication and how it is used to manage and secure a network.

-Create, configure, and manage user accounts and issues and delegated user administration.

-Network Scripting, batch scripts, and DFS Object mapping.

-Understand Active Directory structure, requirements, and extensions, including LDAP, WINS, and DNS.

-Plan and implement Group Policy strategies.

-Utilize all management functions of Windows 2008 server, including profiles, shares, permissions, and scripts.

-Ethics of computers, networks and Internet usage.

-Policies relating to using computers, networks and Internet, including fault tolerance, acceptable use, and disaster recovery.

-Role and responsibility of the Network Administrator and MIS functions.

-Logic and critical thinking skills for troubleshooting and MIS support functions.

-Professional IT conduct (job readiness, professional dress, interpersonal communication).

Attendance: Students are expected to attend all class sessions. Students are responsible for missed material and should refer
to the class web page on MyBay to find out what they missed. Instructor reserves the right to give daily quizzes/assignment/411
quiz that cannot be made up and will count for up to 20% of course grade. Students that do not come to class on a regular basis
can expect a lower grade than those that do. Student MUST BE IN ATTENDANCE to take daily quizzes and receive points!

Missed Assignments: Assignments (and exams) are not normally accepted late. If the instructor allows a missed assignment
(or exam) to be made up, it will be due within one week of the original due date. Any late assignment after one week will be
counted as half credit.

Participation: Students are expected to participate in class discussions. Taking notes should be considered required, as many
questions come from class discussions and labs! The instructor retains the right to use the book, handed out material and lecture
notes for the exams. The 411 is discussion time at beginning of every class in which students are expected to bring clippings of
new technology, viruses, etc.. to class. Participation will be entered into the grade book.

Cheating: Cheating or copying other students work will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic failure of the
assignment and may result in referral to the Dean of Business and Technology for further action.

Course Withdrawal and Incomplete: Course withdrawal is the students responsibility. The proper paperwork must be
processed in a timely manner or failure to do so will result in the student receiving an F at the end of the term. An incomplete
grade is given only in extenuating circumstances, and only with prior arrangement with the instructor.

Studying and note taking- Many students find that college exams are MUCH harder than high school exams, unfortunately
many students do not realize this until after scoring poorly on the first and even second exams. Please refer to the Study Skills
Handout # 1 (SQ3R). It shows a tried and true method to learn new material. This method has been proven by scores of
research studies at colleges and universities to raise scores of students.

Students with Disabilities: Students with disabilities who require special accommodations should identify themselves at the
beginning of the term if there is expectation to take the disability into consideration. By federal law, instructors are NOT informed
of any learning disabilities you have and will only provide special assistance or accommodation if you tell them.

Acceptable Use Policies- Apply to all workstations and servers in Lab 402 E, F, and G Acceptable Use in the Computer
Systems Technology labs can be defined as using the computer as if your grandmother were watching over your shoulder! Any
student found to be violating acceptable use policies will be referred to the Dean of Technology for discipline .

Acceptable Classroom Behavior- in recent years, we have noticed more and more students are becoming distracted
by electronic devices (cell phone, laptop, desktop, etc..). Though this behavior is considered normal in some
workplaces, it is distracting to the student, their peers, and the instructor while in class. The instructor reserves the
right to remove the distraction and/or the person causing the distraction from the classroom for a period of time at their
discretion. (Example: Instructor gives lab assignment instructions, but Jasmine elects to continue to play WOW
online during the instructions.) Please turn off cell phone ringers, mute other electronic devices, and PAY ATTENTION
IN CLASS.

Instructor Sickness or Absence-

*In the event of instructor sickness or inability to attend class, all students in class affected will be emailed AT LEAST
1 hour prior to class start time. This email can only be sent to baycollege.edu email addresses. It is advised that
students check their Bay College Web Mail prior to leaving home to drive to the college.

10. STUDENT ACADEMIC ASSISTANCE:

Bay de Noc Community College provides tutoring services through the Special Populations Program located in the Learning
Resource (LRC). One-on-one tutoring sessions are available to Bay College students at no charge for the service. If you fall
behind in your studies or are having problems with maintaining an acceptable grade, please contact the Special Populations office
at extension 1128.

11. ASSESSMENT

All Bay College students will be expected to participate in assessment


activities during their course of study at the college. These activities
may include participating in assessment of General Education outcomes,
classroom assessment for specific course lessons, or assessment of skills
needed for a specific program. The assessments will help instructors
and the college make decisions to improve instruction and student
learning.

12. Weather-related Information:

Weather-related information is now available on our phone system. When a student calls the college, following the "Hello and
welcome to Bay de Noc Community College," the prompt is: "If you are calling for weather or class closing information, press 7."
13. Academic Dishonesty: DON'T DO IT! Cheating, plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in failure of the class.
Formally, the following is the policy of Bay College:

It shall be the policy of Bay de Noc Community College Board of Trustees that the college provide opportunities for students to
gain the knowledge, skills, judgment, and wisdom they need to function in society as responsible citizens. Plagiarism, falsifying
data, and other forms of academic dishonesty are inconsistent with the college's goals and mission. Students are expected to
pursue their education at Bay College with honor and integrity. A copy of the entire Academic Integrity Policy is available to
students upon request.

14. Federal Student Aid Statement

"Federal Student Aid (FSA) funds are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire
period for which assistance is received. A student who withdraws after beginning attendance, but prior to completing 60% of the
semester, will have their eligibility for FSA grants or loan funds recalculated. The student may be required to return any unearned
funds."
