1.

An L-shaped bracket hinged at point A is supported by two springs with stiffness k1 and
k2 (Figure 1). The mass of the bracket is m and is uniformly distributed. Find the
equivalent mass, the equivalent stiffness and the natural frequency of the system.

2. The mass of a complex-shaped object is 3 kg. When this object is suspended like a
pendulum (Figure 2), its frequency of oscillation is 30 cycles/min. The center of mass is
at a distance of 0.2 m from the pivot point A.
Find the mass-moment of inertia of the object about its center of mass.

3. Consider the system shown in Figure 3 (a) &(b), where m = 10 kg, l1= 35 cm, and l= 50
cm. A record of free vibration is shown in Figure 1.12b. Find the values of the spring
constant k and the damping coefficient c.

4. Find the natural frequency of small amplitude oscillations of the system shown in figure 4
given below, when the cylindrical disk of mass M rolls without slipping on the horizontal
surface

5. Instrument panel of 25kg mass of an aeroplane must be isolated from an engine


vibrating with amplitude of 0.2mm at 10000rpm. The instrument panel is mounted on 4
isolators each having stiffness of 40kN/m and a damping constant of 400 N-s/m.

Amplitude of vibration of the panel
Dynamic load on each isolator due to vibration.
6. A machine weighs 18kg and is supported on springs and dampers. The total stiffness of
the spring is 12N/mm and damping is 0.2N/mm/s. The system is initially at rest and a
velocity of 120mm/s is imparted to the mass. Determine:
The displacement and velocity of mass as a function of time.
The displacement and velocity after 0.4s
7. A portion of an automobile suspension system consists of an elastic spring and a
viscous damper, as shown in fig 5. If the spring is chosen such that k/m = 40 sec-2
determine the allowable range of the ratio c/m so that any oscillations that occur will
decay by a factor of 95% within 1 cycle

8. A 65kg man floats on a 1.8m by 0.6m inflatable raft in a quiescent swimming pool.
Estimate the period of vertical bobbing of the man and raft system should the man be
disturbed. Assume that the weight of the man is distributed uniformly over the raft and
that the mass of the raft is negligible
9. A body of mass 5 kg is supported on a spring stiffness of 1960 N/m and has a dashpot
connected to it which produces a resistance 1.96 N at a velocity of 1 m/s. In what ratio
will the amplitude of vibration be reduced after 5 cycles.
10. A spring-mass-dashpot system consists of a spring of stiffness 343 N/m. The mass is
3.43 kg. The mass is displaced 2cm beyond the equilibrium position and released. Find
the equation of motion of the system, if the damping coefficient of the system is equal to
(i) 137.2 N-sec/m (ii) 68.6 N-sec/m
11. A counter rotating eccentric weight exciter is used to produce the forced oscillation of a
spring-supported mass. By varying the speed of rotation, resonant amplitude of 0.6 cm
was recorded. When the speed of rotation was increased considerably beyond the
resonant frequency, the amplitude appeared to approach a fixed value of 0.08cm.
Determine the damping factor of the system.
12. Find the natural frequency of small amplitude oscillations of the system shown in figure 6
given below, when the cylindrical disk of mass M rolls without slipping on the horizontal
surface

15. A vertical single stage air compressor of 500kg is mounted on springs of k= 1.96x105
N/m and dashpot of damping factor 0.2. The rotating parts are balance and the
equivalent reciprocating parts weigh 20kg. The stroke length is 0.2m. Determine the
dynamic amplitude of vertical motion and the phase difference between the motion and
the excitation force if the compressor operates at 200 rpm.
16. A body of mass 1500 kg is suspended on a leaf spring. The system was set into
vibration and the frequency of vibration was measured to be 0.982 Hz. The successive
amplitude was measured to be 4.8cm, 4.1 cm, 3.4 cm and 2.7cm. Determine the the
spring stiffness and the damping.
