A. Social Dance (Recreational Dance)


- Social dance is any dance carried for a purpose of participation and sociability.
B. Classification of Social Dance
1. Social Dance Mixers this is informal partner changing type when couples are arranged
informally around the floor. Social dance mixers are devices for making an acquainted
group mix together get acquainted with each there without the formality of
introduction. They are good ice breaker
2. Square dance, round dance, couple dance (Foreign Dance) this dance bring about the
same purpose, which is socialization and recreation.
3. Ballroom Dance (Formal type of Dance) is formally usually performed in the evening in
a very formal setting. It may be formal or semi-formal. This includes the cha-cha, tango,
boogie, swing, rumba, and samba.
C. Modern Dance (Contemporary or Creative dance)
- This dance is a product of 20th century. This speaks of movement based on the principles ,
tension and relaxation, fall and recovery, and contraction and release. Examples of these
are ballet and interpretive dance.

TECHNIQUES IN GOOD BALLROOM DANCING

a. Good posture and correct firm hold are the two important techniques in good ballroom
dancing. If good posture does not apply, it will give not only an appearance of bad style but
also seriously affects the c\balncd and guid the dancers.
b. A couple should literally move as one, striving for a smooth and relaxed motion across the
floor.
SOCIAL ETIQUTTE AT A DANCE

1. Etiquette defined
a pattern of behavior which is motivated by the considerate thing to do.
Any set of rules as a guide to help people become aware of the common courtesies
expected of them and to help develop consciousness of social responsibility.
2. General Rules of Etiquette
This specifically to private or club and not public dances although many of them are
applicable
a. a lady always accept graciously a gentlemans request to dance unless she has a very
good excuse, in which case she does not accept an invitation from another
gentelemen for the same dance
b. a gentelemen does not stand on the sideline or cut-in when there is a lady not
dancing
c. A gentleman and a lady always accept graciously with any partner with whom he or
she paired in a mixer. If they do not wish to cooperae, they shuld sit out during a
mixer.
d. A gentleman should preced the ladt when the cuple makes its way out to the dance
floor.
e. Couples dances freely around the floor in a counterclockwise directin and don not
cut across or to go in wrong direction against traffic. Couple who dance faster
pattern should dance nearer the outside of the floor so they can proceed
comfortably. In roud dancing, couple often dance in a circle format around the floor,
counterclockwise.
f. It is not acceptable to dance open or fast pattern which requires extra space when
on a crowded dance
g. A gentlemen always thanks the lady after dancing with her and she acknowledge
coutesy.
h. A ldy may exucure herself after two consecutive dance with a gentleman in order to
allow a gentleman take another partner
i. A gentleman does not presume to monopolize all of a ladys dance at a non-date
occasion
j. A genteleman never leaves a lady unaccompanied on the dance floor. At the end of
the dance whom acquinted, take her to a group of her own friends or hostess, or to
where she was sitting when he or she dance, after which she has the privilege or
excusing himself.
k. When couples are talking together, it is customary to introduce ones partner and
see that he or she meet ones friends.
l. It is not acceptable to sing while danving or to show off in any way.
m. It is not good taste to smoke or chew gum in the dance floor
n. A gentleman does not cut in: on the gentlemen who has taken his partner until
another gentleman has cut in. tag is synonymous term in some sections of the
country
o. A lady does not refuse to change partners when gentlemen cut in, if tgs are
permitted at the dance.
p. When cutting in, gentleman touches the left shulder of the prtner of the lady with
whm he wishes to dance,. If he is not acquinted with the couple, he
introduceshimself to the gentleman who in turn introduce him to the lady
q. When gentleman wishes to dance with another gentlemans lady, he shuld ask the
man if he might gave a dance with his partner, if the answer isyes, then he will
invite the lady to dance
