IDMT CHARACTERISTICS
OF OVERCURRENT RELAY Date of Experiment: 22-Aug-2017
Circuit Diagram:
Procedure:
Study the Circuit diagram and identify the different components used in the experiment. Connect the
components as shown in circuit diagram.
1) Fault Current versus Time of operation keeping PS & TSM fixed.
a) Fix the PS= 2.5 and TSM=1.
b) Make the initial fault current about 1.5 times the PS.
c) Simulate the fault by opening the switch.
d) Note down the time elapsed since opening the switch till the relay starts clicking. This is the
time of operation of the relay.
e) Increase the fault current by increasing the autotransformer voltage and note down the time of
operation of the relay each time.
f) Repeat the above steps for PS=3.75 and TSM=1

Conclusion:
The graph of time of operation versus fault current has inverse relation when plotted on linear
scale for both PSM=2.5 and PSM=3.75. The time of operation saturates after a certain fault
current. In log-log scale it has a linearly decreasing characteristics.
The graph of time setting multiplier vs time of operation has linearly increasing characteristics.
For IDMT relays the time of operation is more if time setting multiplier is higher.
The observations are in accordance with the theoretical characteristics of IDMT overcurrent
relays.
The time of operation of IDMT relay is dependent on the severity of faults. This ensures that the
relay doesnt operate during normal overload conditions of short duration.
Precautions:
Slowly increase the fault current above the Plug setting and dont increase fault current too much
it may cause burning of rheostat.
Note down the time of operation accurately using a timer.
Wait till the rotating disk of the relay restores to normal position before taking the next it reading.
