ABSTRACT

THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ANTENATAL CARE OF PREGNANT

WOMEN VISIT AND THE OCCURENCE OF BABY WITH LOW BIRTH
WEIGHT (LBW) AT PUSKESMAS PUUWATU IN 2016

ANDI SUGIARTI A

Low birth weight (LBW) is still considered a problem throughout the world because
it has been one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality during neonatal period.
The percentage of low birth weight in Southeast Sulawesi province is likely to
increase in the span of the last five years but declined in 2015. In 2011, the number of
infants with low birth weight status was of 0.28%, and increased to be 1.66%in 2012,
then it kept increasing significantly in 2013 to reach 2.22% and the LBW case was
almost stable in 2014 with a figure of 2.12% before it decreased to be only 1.51%in
2015.

In Southeast Sulawesi province in the last five years, the K1 service coverage showed
a fluctuation during the period 2011 until 2013 which were likely to decline, however
it increased again during the period from 2013 to 2015, while the coverage of K4 has
a pattern of trends that is similar to the pattern of coverage K1 when refers to
Strategic Plan target of the Ministry of Health 2015 (95%), the K4 coverage in
Southeast Sulawesi Province average has not reached the target in average.

In Kendari muncipality, the LBW cases in 2016 reached 126 cases, of which Puuwatu
Sub- District was on the highest first ranks with 45 cases followed by Puskemas
Puuwatu (Public Health Center) on the second with 20 cases. The Efforts for early
detection of pregnancy disorders can be prevented by conducting regular prenatal
care, pregnancy tests which is commonly called as medical term antenatal care
(ANC). The purpose of this research is to find out the correlation between ANC visit
of pregnant women and the occurencce of baby with low birth weight (LBW) in
Puskesmas Puuwatu in 2016.This is an observational analytic study using non-
experimental approach that is cross-sectional study, and uses a simple random sample
of 80 pregnant women who have regular and irregular ANC visits at Puskesmas
Puuwatu in 2016.

The result of the bivariate analysis obtained was p-value = 0.000 < (0.05) therefore,
it can be concluded that there is a relationship between ANC visits with LBW. It
interpretesthat regular ANC visits will reduce the incidence of low birth weight.
