Mrs.

Laurie Hindle
6th Grade Science
Course Outline & Syllabus
2017-2018
The Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) as described by the
state of Michigan are used to determine the topics taught in 6th grade
science. We will be using 4 of the 15 book series published by
Glencoe. The topics covered are:

Science Inquiry Processes (beginning of the year and ongoing)

Ecosystems (first quarter and part of second quarter)
Matter and Energy (end of second quarter)
Composition, Properties, and Changes of the Earth (third quarter)
Plate Tectonics and Fossils (fourth quarter)

Textbook:
We will be using 4 of the 15 Glencoe middle school series books
throughout the year.
Ecology
Motion Forces and Energy (focus is on energy)
Earths Materials and Processes
Changing Surface of Earth

Grade Weights:
Assessments (tests/quizzes/labs) 45%
Daily Work (classwork and homework) 55%

Supply List:
2-3 duo tang folder (s)
1 binder with 4 tabs
Colored checking pen/pencil
Pencils
Lined paper
Colored pencils
Dry erase markers (thick or thin)

Also needed for classroom use:

Kleenex (one box per student would be greatly appreciated)
Hand sanitizer
Dry Erase markers (for use with individual white boards)
Glue sticks
Colored pencils (any brand is fine)

Daily Work/Assignments:
Daily work that is not completed in class should be finished for
homework. All work is due the next day unless specifically told
otherwise. In order to keep their homework to a minimum,
students will need to use their class time effectively. If a student
regularly has more than 15-20 minutes of science homework,
please discuss it with me.

Homework (Late) Policy

All middle school students are expected to do all assigned work
and submit it the next day (unless otherwise specified) for full
credit. Assigned overnight homework will be worth reduced
credit when submitted late. Late assignments will be reduced by
10% for each day that they are late (2 days = -20%off). No
credit will be given for homework turned in after five
days.

Absent Work:
Students will have the same number of days as they were absent
to turn in missing work from their absence. For example, if a
student is absent for one day, they will get one day to make up
all work. If you know of a prolonged absence ahead of time, you
can request homework to be sent home and will be due upon
return to school. There is a designated area set up in our
classroom where the student can locate assignments. It is the
students responsibility to find out what work they
missed while absent. Please look at the planbook link on
my weebly to download copies of assignments, notes and
powerpoints.

Cheating:
Incidences of cheating will not be tolerated. It is a major offense in the
handbook and can result in suspension. Anyone caught cheating will
receive a zero on the assignment, as well as the appropriate
disciplinary action as outlined in the handbook. This applies to the
person who gave another student their completed assignment to be
copied.

Parent Communication:
As parents, we know that staying informed of our childs progress is essential
to their success. The following tools are put in place to help keep your child
organized and to inform you of their progress.

Agendas:
All students are required to carry their agenda book with them to all of
their classes and fill out the agenda for the day when they arrive to
each class. This is a great tool to keep students organized and parents
informed. Please review these daily. I only require students to fill out
the days homework in their agenda. If there is no HW that day, they
will write, No HW.
