This homework assignment for an electrical engineering power systems course contains 3 problems:
1) Find energy usage statistics from the EIA website and cite sources.
2) Perform complex number calculations, converting between exponential, rectangular, and polar forms.
3) Determine the minimum and maximum possible rms values for the sum of two sinusoidal voltages given their individual rms values and unknown phase angles.

Reading Assignment: Read the chapter on sinusoidal steady
state from your Circuits textbook. 1. Consult the website of the Energy Information Administration (www.eia.gov) and find answers to the following questions. For each question, provide the specific link from which you took the information, and state the year the information refers to. (5 points) (a) How much energy does a person use in a year? State your answer in Btu and KWh. (b) What percentage of the world energy consumption is by the United States? (c) Did the U.S. energy consumption decline or rise in 2016 with re- spect to 2015? How did the energy production from coal, nuclear, petroleum, renewables, and natural gas change from to 2016 to 2015? 2. Given two complex numbers A1 = 5 60 and A2 = 3 j4, (a) con- vert A1 to rectangular form; (b) convert A2 to exponential form; (c) calculate the sum A1 + A2 , and express it in exponential form; (d) Calculate the product A1 A2 and express it in rectangular form, and (e) calculate the ratio A1 /A2 and express it in rectangular form. For all the computations above, show your work and how you make the conversions from one form to another. (15 points) 3. Suppose we have two sinusoidal voltages of the same frequency with rms values of 12 V and 7 V, respectively. The phase angles of the two voltages are unknown. What is the smallest rms value that the sum of the two voltages could have? The largest? (Justify your answer.) (10 points)
