Water Spray System is an automatic or manually actuated fixed pipe system connected to
a water supply and equipped with water spray nozzles designed to provide a specific water
discharge and distribution over the protected surfaces or area - NFPA 15: 3-3.22
Water Spray System shall be specifically designed to provide for effective fire control,
extinguishment, prevention, or exposure protection - NFPA 15: 1.1.2
Water Spray System can be independent of, or supplementary to, other forms of protection
- NFPA 15: A.1.1.2
Water Spray System is applicable for protection of specific hazards and equipment and
shall be permitted to be installed independently of, or supplementary to, other forms of fire
protection systems or equipment - NFPA 15: 1.3.1
Water Spray System is used in applications where there is an extreme hazard. The
principal purpose of water spray system may be either extinguishment or cooling or both. In the
case of volatile liquids, particularly outdoors, the principal purpose of water spray system is to
cool the equipment so that it is not significantly damaged by the fire. In many cases it is
permissible to lose the material being stored or processed as long as the equipment used to
store or process it can be put back into service in a relatively short time when the fire is
extinguished. Actual extinguishment is often accomplished by either letting the fire burn itself out
or by other means.
Cooling must accomplish two (2) important functions. It must keep the structure below
the temperature at which deformation or physical weakening occurs and it must limit the heat
input into the liquid or gas contained in the equipment within tolerable limits.
Equipment can be expected to be exposed to heat from basically two sources, either a
spill fire where burning liquid or gas is present over, under or around the equipment or an
exposure fire adjacent to the equipment but not actually involving it.
Water Spray protection is acceptable for the protection of hazards
involving each of the following groups:
* NFPA 15: 7.2.3.2.1. Open nozzles shall be located to direct water spray onto the surfaces to extinguish fire in hydraulic
oil, the belt, the contents on the belt, or the drive unit.
* NFPA 15: 7.2.3.2.1. The water spray system shall be installed to protect the drive rolls, the take-up rolls, the power units,
and the hydraulic-oil unit.
* NFPA 15: 7.3.1.3. Nozzles shall be positioned to impinge water directly on the areas of the source of fire and where spills
are likely to spread or accumulate.

* NFPA 15: 8.1.2. Minimum operating pressure of any nozzle protecting outdoor hazard shall be 1.4 bar (20 psi).
