1. Prepare the materials needed for the experiment.
2. Fill tub with sand up to desired depth to represent the land area. Set one side as town area. 3. Use clay as base liner. Record the quantity used (in cups). 4. To prevent leakage into the soil, use geosynthetic liner. 5. Poke holes into the tub to insert straws to represent leachate pipes. Incline the straws to direct flow away from the town area. 6. Use cotton balls soaked in dyed water as waste. Record the amount of cotton balls used. Use sand and gravel as daily soil cover. 7. Cover with another layer of clay to serve as top cover. Add gravel to aid in slowing the flow of water through the ground. 8. To simulate rain, pour water over the landfill. Simulation of earthquake and wind is optional. 9. Observe any leaks into the ground, as well as the flow of water out of the straws, to determine effectivity 10. Record observations. 11. Repeat experiment until desired outcome is achieved.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS
The group decided to conduct two (2) experiments using varied quantity of materials used for the same sequence of layers.
