Magnetic ow meter

The third most common owmeter (behind dierential

pressure and positive displacement ow meters) is the
magnetic ow meter, also technically an electromagnetic
ow meter or more commonly just called a mag meter. A
magnetic eld is applied to the metering tube, which re-
sults in a potential dierence proportional to the ow ve-
locity perpendicular to the ux lines. The physical prin-
ciple at work is electromagnetic induction. The magnetic
ow meter requires a conducting uid, for example, water
that contains ions, and an electrical insulating pipe sur-
face, for example, a rubber-lined steel tube.
If the magnetic eld direction were constant,
electrochemical and other eects at the electrodes
would make the potential dierence dicult to distin-
guish from the uid ow induced potential dierence.
To mitigate this in modern magnetic owmeters, the
magnetic eld is constantly reversed, cancelling out the
electrochemical potential dierence, which does not
change direction with the magnetic eld. This however
prevents the use of permanent magnets for magnetic
owmeters.
