G324 Advanced Portfolio in Media

Short Film Treatment

Working Title (this may change later): conditions

Genres incorporated: Fictional, fantasy, conceptual

Primary Target Audience (age, gender, socio-economics, psychographics):

16-26, those with an awareness of/are interested in how people are affected by
their own experiences and the media

Log Line (a snappy description of your story in 2-3 sentences. Like a blurb):

About conditioning (learning through association) and how both the media and life
experiences can affect an individual, but shown in a very abstract and conceptual
way.

Profile of the main character (name, age, gender, any relevant back story that
influences their actions or attitudes in the present):

To begin with they are a blank canvas. It is as though they are a mannequin only
human, and floppy. At the end they are portrayed as a stereotypical 17 year old
male. Their backstory is shown through projections.

Locations:

A box, a white backdrop

Props/ Costumes needed:

Props: a box
Costumes: very plain clothes, dont stand out

Breakdown of Plot (think about how your story fits together and why were
watching these characters journeys):
Minute 1 Chapter one
Lights turn on and we see a cardboard box in a room- white, possibly
large but this depends on locations available
Static noise to accompany this
A character is in the box but we do not see them fully- only subtle
hints are shown like the sides of the box being pressed against or hair
poking out of a corner-perhaps a few short takes of limbs inside the
box to create enigma codes
Minute 2 Chapter two
A blue plasticine blob bounces around in front of a white background,
seemingly unrelated to previous section until the box is shown once
again. It crawls around the box, scuttling like an insect and as if
searching for something. It then opens the box and character falls out.
They are very floppy, with no real character to them
The screen cuts to black alongside the sound of a light switch and the
static noise cuts off (also lowers in volume while box is out of sight)
Minute 3 Chapter three: Conditioning. (Possible title?)
The character is shown against a white background, the remains of the

box can be seen but they are worn and damp. Projections of defining
events, news headlines, societal expectations, adverts, etc. are shown;
the character appears to be phased and squints but accepts the
situation. There is a gradual build up until everything stops and the
screen cuts to black once again.
Minute 4 Chapter 4.
Shows the effect on the character- perhaps they exit the room/ walk
around/small montage of events that relate to the things projected if
close attention is paid
Minute 5 Conclusion also explains use of the plasticine blob in some way

Narrative Structure:

Set in chapters, with clear points to define a new chapter. Each chapter is slightly
different visually but they link closely. This is an unconventional narrative, as it
doesnt really follow a storyline.

Specific filming and/ or editing techniques you intend to include:

Animation (stop motion, using both people and clay)
