Problems for Lecture 3: Basic Fluid Properties

Note
Recommended problems are marked with [R].

The problems are rated as follows:

* are basic problems testing core concepts or skills. You must be able to do all of these
problems.
** are applied and/or intermediate problems, and you should be able to do all of these
problems.
*** are advanced problems that presents a challenge. You are encouraged to try these
problems and should be able to do them if you are aiming for a first class pass.
**** are advanced problems that often incorporate work outside the bounds of this course.
They can be used to deepen your understanding of the work, but are not for examination
purposes.

Basic fluid properties: Density, Specific Weight, Specific Volume and

Specific gravity

1. *F&F Sample problem 2.2

2. *F&F Exercise 2.3.2
3. [R]*F&F Exercise 2.3.4
4. *F&F Exercise 2.3.5

5. *A reservoir of glycerin has a mass of 1200 kg and a volume of 0.952 m3. Find the glycerins
weight, mass density, specific weight and specific gravity. (11.77 kN; 1261 kg/m3; 12.36
kN/m3; 1.261)

6. * Given that the specific gravity of a certain liquid is 0,86, determine the liquid's (6)
a. Mass density
b. Specific weight
c. Specific volume.

7. *The volume of a rock is found to be 0.00015 m3. If the rocks specific gravity is 2.60, what is
its weight? (3.82 N)

8. *F&F Problem 2.1

9. **F&F Problem 2.3

10. [R]*A fluid with a specific gravity of 1.2 moves through a pipe at rate of 2 000 kg every 6
hours. Calculate the a) mass density, b) specific weight and c) volumetric flowrate of the
fluid in SI units.

Compressibility of Liquids

11. [R]*F&F Exercise 2.5.4. Use standard sea level atmospheric conditions rather than normal
atmospheric conditions. {64.2 MPa}

12. *F&F Exercise 2.5.5

13. [R]** The deepest point in the sea occurs in the Pacific Ocean between Japan and the
Philippines. It is 10.91 km deep and at a pressure of 108.6 MPa. If the density and pressure
of sea water at the surface is 1023 kg/m3 and 101.325 kPa respectively, estimate the density
of sea water at its deepest point. Assume a bulk modulus of and 2.3 GPa for sea water.
{1074 kg/m3}

14. **At a depth of 8 km, in the ocean, the pressure is 81.8 MPa. If the specific weight of
seawater at the surface is 10.05 kN/m3, and its bulk modulus is 2.34x109 N/m2, what is the
specific weight of sea water at a depth of 8 km? (10.41 kN/m3 )
