Course Description Core Texts & Literary Focus

Both ENR and ELA are courses that involve
Quarter 1: The Odyssey by Homer
literature, reading, and writing.
Assignments associated with the courses Quarter 2: Romeo & Juliet by William Shakespeare
include vocabulary quizzes, reading tests,
Quarter 3: Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
and practice through daily assignments. We
will practice writing through producing Quarter 4: A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
short essays, quick writes, and research
reports.
During reading enrichment on A days, we
will specifically focus on reading strategies,
comprehension strategies, and vocabulary Grade Distribution
acquisitions strategies. Bell work/Journals/Exit Slips: 10 pts each

During English Language Arts on B days, Interactive Notebook: 25pts (randomly checked)
we will review grammar and punctuation, Home Learning: 20-50 pts (based on length and complexity)
evaluate literary terms, and analyze
characters, themes, and plots. Class Work/Notes: 25-50 pts (based on skills assessed)

Quizzes Assessments: 30-75 pts (based on importance)

Please remember, students who have
parental involvement and assistance tend to Test Assessments: 100-200 pts (based on importance)
make higher grades and have less academic Writing Assignments: 50-200 pts (based on usage as a test
stress. or quiz assessment)

The Class Notebook
Organization is a large portion of success in
Adhere to the student code of conduct rules
this course. Students are required to keep a
well-organized notebook maintaining past
assignments, handouts, and class notes, etc.
Random notebook checks are to be expected.

How to Make-up ID Requirement

Assignments
Make-up work is the responsibility of the
student. If a student is absent on the day
that the assignment is due, the student is
expected to turn in the assignment
immediately upon his or her return.
Ways to get make-up work:
1. Check the class make-up folder.
2. Check the class planner.
3. Ask a classmate.
4. Visit the class website.
For extra assistance, please set an appointment
with Mrs. Brown during after school hours. Please
keep in mind that excessive absences will
adversely affect a students ability to be successful
in this class. Attendance is essential because
discussions, cooperative learning strategies, and
other oral assignments cannot be made up.
& Hall Pass Policy
IDs Your school ID must be with you at ALL times
from the beginning until the end of class. If you
come to class without an ID, you will be instructed
to go to the office to either buy a new ID or get a
temporary one. You will also need to bring a tardy
slip to be admitted to class.
Hall Passes Each student is allowed 4 hall passes
per quarter. NOT EXECPTIONS!! Do not ask to leave
the classroom the first or last 15 minutes of class.
Passes are only given during independent work
periods. Hall passes can be revoked for students
who abuse the privilege by not returning or
staying out of class too long.
Tardies Students are responsible for signing the
tardy log when entering unexcused after the bell
and tracking tardy progression. Consequences for
tardies range from detentions to referrals to the
dean.
