Introduction
The workshop on Homa 'is intended for use by devotees of the r Vidya Temple to perform very
simplified fire sacrifice. The vedic ceremony is not intended here. The preamble taught in the vedic ceremony is
elaborate and is not required for the daily practice. The basic requirements for this abridged, tantric Homa
ritual are freshly popped popcorn, clarified butter, havan samagri, a Rk and Srk, a homa kunda and a
small tray.
In Mantra Sadhana one tenth of the total recitation of a mantra is to be offered into the fire. Further
one tenth is to be offered as Annadhana. In this workshop the directional deities and the importance of
observing the orientation with respect to the terrestrial magnet will be discussed. The preliminaries will be
dispensed with and in its place the all important guru paduka mantra will be used. This is in keeping with
the Dattatreya Kaulachara Sampradayam. The guru mantra covers all the "Aamnayas". It is .Omnipotent
and can cover the seeker and is sufficient to take him \ her beyond the preliminary rituals like; Agni
Stapanam, Aajya Stapanam, Digdevata Stapanam, etc.
The participants should become quickly familiar with the simple routine that is the hallmark of the
Peetam here and be able to perform simple but extremely effective homas. All the homas need a basic ability
for the participants and practitioners alike to become familiar with the art and skill of chanting mantras
clearly and audibly. Whether one is performing the homam or not one needs to practice chanting the mantras
at all times until it becomes second nature.
Chaithanvananda
(The following Mantra is called the Vaancha Kalpa Ganapathy Mantra it is intended for use by those
that have received at least the Panchdasakshari Mantra. The origins of the Mantra are in the Rg Veda
and it quickly confers the desired results on the devotees who chant it with sincere devotion).
Chanting this mantra offer into the fire Ghee, Havan Samagri (a pinch of it held between the
thumb and middle finger) at the least. If you have access to a, larger fire pit like the one in the temple,
then you may offer into the fire some or all of the following depending on the availability. Gooseberry
(Nelli), sugar candy crystals, dates, yellow squares of silk, little drops of honey, particular species of
grass (Dhurva) coconut pieces. When the final (ahuti) is done chant the following mantra visualizing
that an elephant is seated in front of you and that with one hand you are lifting it's trunk and offering the
ahuti into the mouth.
After the purnahuti chanting of the Ganapathy Atarvasirsham is to be done at this juncture to
Maha ganapathy as a service. This also can be performed as a homam with the individual stanzas being
used as mantras to be offered into the fire. It is deemed appropriate because of it's Vedic origins. The
sequence originates in the Atarvana Veda.

For the final oblation (Purnahuti) stand and link hands so that everyone participating can also
obtain the fruits of the Homa. Offer into the plate holding the final oblation (preferably a silver plate, if
none is available then a copper plate can be used. Avoid using steel or stainless steel. If no copper plate
is available a clean brass plate is allowed) drops of ghee chanting:

The final oblation plate should hold the following items depending on what items are available.
The plate should hold, popcorn, fruit, a pomegranate fruit, coconut (cracked and the water poured out)
sugar candy, dates, raisins, white sesame, little honey, goose berry, modakham (the sweet meat that
Ganesh holds in his hand) a ripe mango, jaggary , four pieces of sugarcane, four bananas, wood-apple.
These items should be tied in a bundle in a yellow piece of silk cloth.
The following purnahuti mantra should be chanted while the final oblation is poured into the fire.
From the Srk a continuous stream of ghee should fall on the flames as the Rk covers the Srk. If the tilt of
the Srk and Rk are carefully controlled the continuous stream can be made without resorting to refilling
again and again.
Now place the plate aside and offer drops or one full spoon for each of the following mantras:
