t h e e f f e c t o f r e p l a c i n g 94X e x h a u s t r a i s e w i t h a new
93X e x h a u s t r a i s e as shown i n F i g u r e 4. The simu-
l a t i o n shows t h a t u n d e r t h e new c o n d i t i o n , D r e s s u r e s
t h a t must be p r o d u c e d by t h e a i r c u r t a i n : a r e r e d u c e d
b u t t h e number o f a i r d o o r s r e q u i r e d i n t h e c r o s s c u t s
d o u b l e s . The f i n a l d e c i s i o n c o n c e r n i n g t h e c h o i c e g f
systems w i l l be based on t h e a n t i c i p a t e d d u s t l e v e l s
i n the series-oriented loading drifts.

CONCLUSIONS

The improvement o f an e x i s t i n g m i n e v e n t i l a t i o n
s y s t e m t o accommodate a second p r o d u c t i o n 1 eve1 i s a
m u l t i d e c i s i o n p r a c e s s . D i f f e r e n t a l t e r n a t i v e s must be
e v a l u a t e d b e f o r e d e t e r m i n i n g w h i c h s y s t e m w i l l be most
c o s t e f f e c t i v e i n a p a r t i c u l a r m i n e s i t u a t i o n . Manual
c a l c u l a t i o n s a r e extreme1 y compl ex t o w a r d r e s o l v i n g
mu1 t i n e t w o r k p r o b l e m s . Computer s i m u l a t i o n p r o v i d e s
q u i c k and r e l i a b l e s o l u t i o n s f r o m w h i c h v a r i o u s param-
e t e r s c a n be e a s i l y e v a l u a t e d f o r t h e i r c r i t i c a l i t y
and e f f e c t i v e n e s s .

Computer s i m u l a t i o n o f t h e v e n t i l a t i o n s y s t e m a t
Henderson Mine has p r o v i d e d a h e l p f u l t o o l i n e v a l u -
