Welcome

What if you could gain the self-belief of a Cambridge student in just 5 minutes?

What if you could double your concentration levels first thing in the morning?

What if you could stop procrastinating during study sessions?

Welcome to the power of habit building, through which small

changes to your routine can dramatically improve your moti-
vation, concentration and, ultimately, results.

I am just like you: Facebook presents a constant threat to

productivity; I like staying up till late watching films The
Shawshank Redemption is probably my favourite; I dont
drink cod-liver oil to help my brain; I like messing
around with my friends gaming, playing foot-
ball, having a drink or two

2
The point is, from the outside, you probably wouldnt see much difference between what
you are doing and what I am doing on a daily basis.

IT SEEMS LIKE THERE IS ALMOST

NO DIFFERENCE
B E T W E E N S T U D E N TS W H O WA N T TO S U C C E E D

A N D S T U D E N T S W H O A C T U A L LY A R E S U C C E E D I N G .

That is because the differences between them are relatively small, but they all add up to
make a huge difference.

So, in this guide youll learn 10 of these small differences between highly successful
students and students who arent quite where they want to be.

In other words, you will learn 10 study hacks for better grades and, from the outside, it will
seem like almost nothing (other than your grades) has changed.

Enjoy,

Week 1
0 WHAT YOU NEED
TO DO

Over the next week, you need to consciously make an effort to use study hacks 1-5 during
the course of your day. Youll be able to get started using these study hacks straight away
and theyll have an instant impact on your productivity.

To ensure you really get the most out of them, I strongly advise you focus on doing just
the first five this week and then the second five next week. If you try to do them all at
once, you risk overloading yourself. Ill also send you emails to remind you exactly what
you should be focussing on and to make sure you dont let your new habits slip.

Week 2

Once youre happy that you have got to grips with study hacks 1-5 and have successfully
incorporated at least some of them into your routine, you should begin to try study hacks
6-10.

Set Reminders
R
In order to ensure that you start to build these study hacks into your daily routine, you will
find it considerably easier if you have something to remind you. Just as you brush your
teeth at a certain stage of your morning routine, some of these study hacks can be used
at specific times of day. So, where you see a grey box like this one with an R in the corner,
it will advise you to either set a daily reminder in your phone calendar or take an action to
help you remember to use the study hack.
4
As an example, so you know I really do use this method, here is a screenshot of my calen-
dar for this week. The red events in the calendar are my reminders.

I currently have one event set in the morning at 9am and one set in the evening at 8:30pm.
I created these events with alerts turned on so that a reminder pops up on my phone or
laptop everyday in the morning and evening. It tells me to either read some French or
Spanish news or to learn some vocab. I am trying to get into a habit of reading and learn-
ing vocab twice a day, so these reminders help to keep this goal fresh in my mind.

1
WRITE IT
DOUBLE YOUR SELF-
BELIEF IN 5 MINUTES
When To Use This

During my first year of university, I suffered quite badly from anxiety, putting myself under
lots of pressure and doubting myself. So, I now use this method to combat any self-
doubts I may have about my ability to succeed.

For example, I used it this year whenever I began to panic that I might not do as well in my
exams as I hoped, or when I felt under pressure from all of the work I had to do.

I recommend you have a go at this right now. Then, you can use this study hack whenever
you feel like you are lacking self-confidence.

The Method

Step 1 Get Your Worries Out

Sometimes half of the problem may be that youre not being totally honest with yourself,
ignoring the fact that you have concerns about your exams. Equally, you may be trying to
block your worries out completely.

This is not the way to deal with anxieties. You need to be open with yourself about any
concerns you may have before you can face up to them. So, take out a blank piece of pa-
per and write down any worries you may have about your exams in general, about specific
subjects or anything else that you think may affect your exam performance. Ensure you
leave a reasonably big gap between each concern.

7
Tip

If you cant think of specific things that worry you (such as: I dont think Im going to
be able to cope with all of the work I have to do this week), you may find it helpful to
write down bullet points (again leaving plenty of space between each point) about how
you are feeling. Let it all loose on this piece of paper!

Step 2 Question Yourself

A lot of people consider questioning yourself to be negative, saying you should always be-
lieve in yourself and ignore any negative thoughts you may have. However, questioning
yourself and being honest with yourself is one of the most powerful tools for increasing
self-belief.

So, for each of your concerns youve written down - particularly for less specific concerns
like: Im worse than my best friend at everything - try asking yourself some of the follow-
ing questions...

Why am I likely to fail?

What can I do to change that?

What good is that attitude going to do me?

Whats the worst that can happen really?!

Am I concentrating on my weaknesses and neglecting my strengths?

What is the point in getting wound up like this?

Am I expecting myself to be perfect?

8
Step 3 Come Up With Solutions

While admitting that you have concerns and beginning to question yourself are very posi-
tive steps, it is even better if you can consciously seek ways to combat these concerns.
So, for each one of your worries, come up with a way you are going to solve that problem.
For example, I might write down the following...

Worry: I might run out of time in my English exam and not write very much for the last question.

Solution: Ill keep a close eye on the clock and ensure I stick strictly to spending 25 minutes on
each question, so that I have 10 minutes left at the end for checking.

Step 4 Throw It Away!

Once youve admitted to and found a solution for each

of your concerns, screw up your piece (or pieces if
youre particularly concerned!) of paper and throw it in
the bin.

you cannot paint

VISUALISE & AFFIRM
FEEL MOTIVATED TO
STUDY INSTANTLY
Ever Feel Demotivated?

The truth is that everyone feels like they cant be bothered sometimes - you just might feel
it more than others. However, much you feel demotivated, this study hack will help you
stop procrastinating and start learning.

Visualise

Step 1 Imagine The Successful Version of You

The first thing you should visualise is the successful version of you. Picture yourself on
results day, with the grades you wanted. Imagine the look on your parents faces as you
tell them how well you did. Imagine the warm feeling inside your stomach as you realise
you have achieved what you set out to achieve. Imagine looking in the mirror and feeling
proud of yourself, punching the air and saying: I did it!.

Step 2 Imagine Failure

Once youve built up this positivity, contrast it with the

feeling of failure. Imagine you have just received your
results, and your best friend did brilliantly, but you did
terribly. Feel that sinking feeling you get when some- Pumping the air
with happiness or
thing goes wrong and imagine looking at yourself in
clenching your fists
the mirror, knowing you could have done better.
in anger?
10
Step 3 Visualise Working Hard

The final step of the process of visualisation is now to return to seeking success. Now
you are set on avoiding failure and on creating the successful version of yourself, you
must visualise how you are going to reach your goals. Imagine yourself working on each
of the things you need to do today to get yourself one step nearer to your desired destina-
tion. Imagine completing all of your tasks for today, then for tomorrow, then for the next
week: tick off the tasks and get nearer to your goal of exam success.

Now what are you going to do?

THE GLASS
STAY FRESH DURING
STUDY SESSIONS
Do You Lose Concentration Quickly?

While you are revising, the temptation to procrastinate on Facebook, Instagram or Poke-
mon Go is likely very high.

It becomes even greater if you begin to lose concentration. Your attention moves away
from what you are studying towards your phone or laptop screen...

... Before you know it you have just spent 10 minutes on Facebook and have totally lost
concentration.

Regain Focus By Drinking Water

Step 1 Feel Your Concentration Drifting

The key to this method is to feel your concentration drifting away from what you are sup-
posed to be studying. As soon as your mind begins to wonder and you begin finding it
hard to focus on what you are doing, stop what you are doing.

Step 2 Clear Your Mind

Immediately clear your mind of whatever you are studying (just for the moment). This will
allow your mind to also get rid of the temptation to drift towards procrastination.

I usually lean back in my chair and stretch my arms out.

12
Step 3 Have A Drink Of Water

13
Step 4 Repeat & Refill

Keep drinking the water when you feel your concentration drifting. Once its all gone, refill
your glass - there should always be a glass containing water on your desk!

Step 5 Leave The Glass On Your Desk

R
When you finish your study session, I
recommend leaving your empty glass
in the middle of your desk.

Then, when you next come to study,

you will remember to make sure you
have a full glass of water throughout
your study session.

BEDTIME REVIEW
INCREASE MEMORY
BY 300%
Do You Wish You Found It Easier To Remember What You Learn?

How well we remember a piece of information is directly linked to how often we come into
contact with that piece of information.

You dont have issues remembering your address, your home phone number or your best
friends name. That is because you use this information regularly.

In fact, if you come in to contact with a piece of information twice, as opposed to once, in
a day, you double your chances of remembering it.

Use Wasted Time

The philosophy behind this study hack is simple: use time that you waste to review infor-
mation. This will enable you to increase memory by at least 100%.

anything else - so this is time we can definitely use.

Review 2 Before Sleep

Instead of going on your phone and watching vines for half an hour before you sleep, take
10 minutes to go over the class notes you made during the day and relax for 20.

It really does only take 10 minutes to quickly skim through everything, reading only key

Review 3 While Doing Your Homework

If you can add in a third review when you do your homework, the effect of this study hack
becomes even more powerful. This is because, by using the information you covered in

SNOOZE, YOU WIN
SLEEP TO LOCK IN
WHAT YOUVE LEARNT
The Laziest Way To Hack Studying

Its not so much a case of snooze, you lose as snooze, you win when it comes to
studying. You quite simply need to make sure you get enough sleep!

Why Is Sleep Important?

Sleep is the time when our brains strengthen, consolidate and transform short- and
medium-term memories into long-term memories.

REVISING WITHOUT SLEEPING IS LIKE

MUCH.

Ever Sat In A Lesson And Felt Your Eyelids Closing?

Sleep is also crucial to help you focus while you study. If you are falling asleep in lessons
or at your desk, how do you expect to successfully learn anything?

18
How Much Is Enough?

Yep - you really do need 8-10 hours

sleep. And yes, the vast majority of the
successful students I know who work
harder than virtually anyone else sleep
for 8-10 hours most nights.

That Doesnt Leave Me Enough Time In The Day!

Ohhh it really does!!

This leaves you 14-16 hours in the day - if you use these hours wisely, that will be enough
to spend...

Activity Time
Getting ready, showering, breakfast etc. 40 minutes
School - including breaks 8 hours
Eating Dinner 40 minutes

STUDY PARADISE
CREATE THE PERFECT
WORKSPACE
The Psychology Of The #Studyspo

Just as people who work have an office, you should have a studyspo that is uniquely the
place where you study. You are there to work hard, but during your breaks you should be
able to leave the space to do other things.

A S T U D Y S P O A L L O W S Y O U T O P H Y S I C A L LY
SEGMENT YOUR TIME BETWEEN STUDYING
AND OTHER THINGS.

Step 1 Have A Desk In A Quiet, Well-lit Spot

As I said above, its so so important that you have a fixed place that becomes firmly as-
sociated in your mind with productive work. You should then leave this study space
during your breaks so that your desk is uniquely associated with work!

It is also best if this desk is either in your bedroom or in a place

where you can control the noise and light. Having your
study space in the kitchen where people often come to talk
and wander round is a bad idea. A dingy cupboard under
the stairs should also be avoided.

22
Share Your #Studyspo with me on Instagram at #EGBCommunity - I reshare the best ones!

Step 2 Eliminate Clutter

Your desk should only have what you need on it. It should be well-organised, with a large
space empty for your work. A cluttered study space is likely present you with more
chances to procrastinate, so tidying it up is the first thing you should do.

Keeping books and notes on your desk tidy not only means they will be better organised
and easier to learn from, but also creates a space in which you are proud to sit and learn.

Step 3 Equip Your Desk Before Each Study Session

You should ensure youre desk is equipped with

the following before beginning each study
session:

All the pens, paper, highlighters etc. you will

Step 4 Love Airplane Mode

Sorry - but your phone is going to have to go on airplane mode until

you take a break. Notifications popping up are probably the biggest
source of procrastination because of how easily you can swipe to
view a message.

Step 5 Use Post-Its

Another benefit of revising in the same place is

that you can decorate your walls with colourful
notes and key facts.

For example, in preparation for my A-level French

exam, I wrote key vocabulary on sticky notes and

a word or expression in my mind By the end I had learnt about 150 words like this!

Step 6 Sort Your Posture With The Bookstand I Use

This step is probably the most important im-

provement Ive made to my studyspo this year!

It makes copying sections from notes or text-

books onto a computer 10 times easier. It also
stops your neck from hurting when reading.

Why Is Organisation Important?

In the 21st Century, our brains are ceaselessly bombarded with information: at school, on
our phones, in the car, we hear, we see, we feel... But do you ever forget to do things be-
cause there is too much going on inside your head?

... I used to. However, now I have a simple system that means I never forget to do any-
thing!

25
Part 2 Digital Lists Of Reminders

I have different lists in my Reminders App and I add everything I have to do to one of
these lists. These days, all phones will have a feature like this, so I strongly recommend
that you start using it!

You should create the following lists on your phone for sure:

GET UP & GO
START THE DAY
WITH A BANG
This study hack is one that I have discovered in the last few months and one that I have
found to massively improve my focus and state-of-mind throughout the rest of the day in
just 7 minutes each morning.

Do 5-10 Minutes Of Exercise When You First Get Up

Before Ive eaten breakfast, brushed my teeth or even left my bedroom, I have already got
my blood pumping and my endorphins flowing. This combination makes me more alert
within 10 minutes of exercising and increases my desire to work first thing in the morning.

What Exercise Should You Do?

It doesnt have to be anything too strenuous. I personally do the following...

Exercise Time

20 Press-ups 1 minute

20 Sit-ups 1 minute

Running on the spot & punching the air 1 minute

Break 1 minute

20 Press-ups 1 minute

20 Sit-ups 1 minute

Running on the spot & punching the air 1 minute

27
I would recommend creating a new phone reminder for the same time as your R
self-affirmation reminder, half an hour before you wake up. This will mean you
can first self-affirm and then exercise before leaving your bedroom!

Eat Immediately After Exercise

Once youve finished exercising, you must then eat breakfast. You have begun to use en-
ergy that you had stored up before sleeping, but this will run out quickly. Therefore, you
need to take on food and water quickly before the positive effects of the exercise become
counter-balanced by the negative effects of a lack of energy.

HOLD ON A SEC
TRIPLE LEARNING VIA
THE SLOW ROUTE
Practice Cures Everything... Or Perhaps Not?

When I was studying for my A-level maths exam, I kept struggling on the same type of
question. So, I tried to solve this using the method I knew best: practice, practice, practice.

Having practiced three very similar questions, I was still really struggling to get to the right
answer. Each time, I had a look through the mark scheme and saw that I wasnt quite do-
ing something right, so I went back and tried again.

My Slow Route That Took A Third Of The Time

So, having struggled for an hour, I decided to take a look at my

notes and textbook. Instead of plowing on with more prac-
tice, I went over the precise steps for this type of question
outlined in my class notes.

Rather than go straight back to practicing a question, I wrote

out the step-by-step explanation from memory in my own
words. This highlighted the mistake I had been making.

WHEN I RETURNED TO ANSWER THE SAME

TYPE OF QUESTION, I COULD NOW DO SO
WITH RELATIVE EASE.

29
So, here are the steps you need to follow to put this hack in to practice...

Step 1 Practice Questions

In order to uncover difficulties you have, you have to start by answering practice
questions.

Step 2 Uncover A Difficulty

As you do practice questions, look out for questions that you are struggling with.

Step 3 Stop & Look At Your Notes / Textbook

Instead of moving on to another question, take the time to explore the difficulty you are
having and to review the method you should use to answer that type of question.

Step 4 Rewrite The Correct Method

Write out the step-by-step explanation from memory in your own words.

Step 5 Try Another Question

Now try and answer another, similar question. You should hopefully find this much easier!

#StudyTimeLapse - My Biggest Discovery This Year!

This may seem like a pretty big statement to make. And it is.

However, this year I went from getting a high 2.1 in my first year Cambridge exams (68%)
to coming third in my entire year with a First Class mark of 75%.

And I honestly believe that this simple study hack is largely responsible for a dramatic in-
crease in the productivity of my revision and thus partly responsible for my improved
exam performance.

How Does It Work?

Those of you who follow @examgradebooster on Instagram will already have seen my vid-
eos: I film myself while I study using the Time Lapse feature built into pretty much all
phone cameras. I then post the video using the hashtag I created: #studytimelapse.

The principle behind the idea is really quite simple...

Y O U W O R K FA R M O R E P R O D U C T I V E LY W H E N
YO U K N O W YO U A R E B E I N G F I L M E D.

The other massive benefit of filming yourself is that you cannot move your phone while it
is filming, so you will find you are far less drawn towards going on Facebook or quickly
messaging a friend.

31
Join the hundreds of people using this hack and share your #StudyTimeLapse on Instagram!

How Can You Use This Technique?

Step 1 Get Ready For A Study Session

Before you start filming, you need to ensure you know how long you are going to study for
(I recommend between 40-60 minutes) and what you are going to study. Then, ensure you
have a glass of water at the ready and all of the books and notes you are going to need.

Step 2 Find A Place to Put Your Phone

You need to find somewhere stable to position

your phone that has a good view either of your-
self or of the work you are doing!

Step 3 Start Filming (Time Lapse Mode)

On iPhone, swipe all the way to the left to use the

Time Lapse Mode. Begin filming and get to work!

14 ABOUT EXAM
GRADE BOOSTER
We are a group of students who aim to provide others, just a year or two behind us in their
education, with the tools they need to maximize their exam performance. We are united by
a passion for sharing ideas and producing materials which allow anyone to achieve the
best possible results.

Our content is uniquely produced by students who have already succeeded in achieving
outstanding examination results and who, therefore, know exactly what is required in both
the revision process and the examinations themselves. This student-driven material is
then checked and approved by the country's finest teaching professionals.

We offer students the opportunity to share their skills, knowledge and revision materials
with others by producing student-written guides which will ensure others, in years to
come, reflect their true potential in the exam room.
