Feuerlilie(English:firelily)wasthecodenameofaGermanantiaircraftmissile,whichwasdevelopedin1940
andwasshelvedbecauseofproblemswiththecontrollerandthedrivesectionattheendofJanuary1945in
favourofotherprojects.TheFeuerliliewasbuiltandtestedatRheinmetallBorsigintwoversions:theF25with
adiameterof25cm,andtheF5555cmindiameter.TheengineswereRheinmetall109505/515solidrockets.

In1940HermannGoering'sAviationResearchorganisation(DeutscheForschungsanstaltfrLuftfahrtDFL)begantodesignaremotecontrolled
rocketunderthecodenameFireLilytoresearchtheconstructionofantiaircraftmissiles.
Thefirstmodel,theFeuerlilie(4.4F)wasascaleddownversioncreatedintheshorttermtogetanimpressionofthelaterflightbehaviourofthenew
weapon.TheintentionoftheAirMinistry(RLM)wastotest25F25s,incooperationwiththeDeutscheForschungsanstaltfrSegelflug(DFS)andthe
ReichspostForschungsamt(RPF).Inpracticethistookplace,butonlysometimelater.

ThedevelopmentoftheremotecontrolsystemwasatanadvancedstageinFebruary1943,withresearchinthewindtunnelandtheconstructionofa
gunrackalmostcomplete.TheproductionofthefirstF25preseriesincluded24specimensmadeunexpectedlygoodprogressandbyJuly1943itwas
possibletomakefurtherF25sready.Thework,however,falteredduetolackofmotors.ThefirstF25intheJuly1943wastestedintheLebaproving
groundontheBalticSea.Bymid1944atleastfourF25shadbeenfired.However,thetestresultsdidnotmeetexpectationsandsothedevelopmentof
theF25wasstillsetbeforeendof1944.

WiththecompletionofthedevelopmentoftheF25,themaininterestintheLFAfocusedontheF55.Thiswasaremotecontrolled2stagesupersonic
missile(firststage:solidandlevelflight:liquid).Launchingthedevicewasmadefromanobliqueramp,lateralsoonamodified88mmantiaircraft
gunlaunchpad.ThefirstproductionoftheF55wascompletedinApril1942.

On25January1943acontractwassenttotheArdeltcompanyinBreslaufortheconstructionoffivetestsamples.[1]Theconstructionoftheunitswas
completedinFebruary1943.On9Marchtherewasadelaytothedeliveryofthebatch,now30units,duetotechnicalproblems,includingwiththe
controllerandthedrivesection.

ThefirstlaunchofanF55A1wason12May1944.Itflewfor69secondsandadistanceof7500m.From19October1944atGreifswalderOiethree
furtherlaunchesoftheF55A2,whichdemonstratedtheirunstableflightbehaviour.ThelaunchoftheimprovedF55A3wasabortedon21October
1944becauseoftechnicalproblems.

On22November1944theTechnicalDepartmentoftheAirMinistrycutthenumberofF55sfrom25to11devices.Therewasafurthercutin
December1944to20sampleunitsoftheA2andA3models.ThelastdocumentedattempttoflyanF55A2tookplaceon11December1944at
GreifswalderOie.

Toacceleratethedevelopmentandtoobtainreliableresults,on14January1945itwasdecidedtousetheunmodifieddrivefromtheHenschelHs293in
theF55A2andA3.TheF55wouldhavealargertailforgreaterflightstability.AsthedevelopmentwasdiscontinuedinlateJanuary1945these
changeswerescrapped.
