Why You Need to Manage Dust and Air Quality
Dust can be a significant issue at construction sites, refuse sites, mines and quarries. Excessive dust can
create health problems and can cause environmental degradation, including air and water pollution. It
causes visibility problems and can damage or discolour nearby property. As well as impacting local
communities, it can affect your workforce and create unsafe working conditions.
Many countries have guidelines and laws requiring operators to control dust emissions, observe maximum
level limits and take mitigating action should excessive dust be identified. This covers a range of measures,
including barriers, traffic control, watering sprays, compacting soil and stabilisation.
Optimisation
Weather conditions can have a significant impact on dust concentrations, reducing dust when it is wet and
increasing it in high wind. Monitoring dust levels continuously enables you to see when conditions require
you to take mitigating action, optimising your activity and reducing costs.
Tracking dust levels upwind and downwind of your site will help you determine if it is your actions that are
creating the dust, or something unrelated that cannot be controlled.
Noise Sentinel lets the user manage dust and air quality data in a similar way to noise. In the Real-time
Control application, dust and air quality measurement locations are marked with a square icon. Current
levels can be seen in the blue boxes to the left in Fig. 1, and also by passing the mouse over the monitoring
location. Any warning or violation level exceedances are shown to the right.

overview
Noise Sentinel supports a range of dust metrics, including PM10, PM2.5 and Total Suspended Particles (TSP).
Depending on the instrumentation chosen, simultaneous measurements are possible. Air quality measurements
can include nitrous oxide, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, total hydrocarbons, and others on request.

display to see trends and determine if there
is an air quality issue to be
addressed, or to instigate dust
mitigation actions such as damping
down. Measurements are taken
regularly, from 1 minute to several
hour intervals, depending on the
instrumentation used. Weather
conditions including wind speed,
wind direction, temperature, pressure
humidity and rainfall are shown at the
top of the screen (see Fig. 2).

report setup wizard, the user can define a report to be
produced regularly and automatically emailed to a
distribution list. Users can choose from a wide range of
dust and air quality metrics and have Noise Sentinel
present the data broken down by location and time of
day.

Instrumentation and Technology
Noise Sentinel works with an industry standard data logger with a wide range of interfaces to established
dust and air quality monitoring sensors. The choice of instruments provides the greatest flexibility for Noise
Sentinel to measure the specific pollutants of interest with the required national approvals for each
measurement technique. The ability to mix instrumentation provides users with the opportunity to optimise
cost. For example, the operator can choose to use a single highly accurate Beta Attenuation Monitor to
measure dust to national standards, and lower cost light scattering instruments to indicate dust levels over a
wider area.
If a user already possesses compatible instrumentation, it may be possible to integrate these and bring
everything together in Noise Sentinel.
The design of dust and air quality monitoring systems depends greatly on location and environment, as well
as legislative requirements. Air quality and environmental experts are often required to help specify
solutions. We will work with your experts or use our own appointed experts to devise a cost-effective
monitoring approach that meets the projects constraints.
A list of compatible instrumentation is listed at the end of this product data. Please contact your Brel & Kjr
representative for further details.
