WELCOME TO PARKWAY PUBLIC SCHOOL

The Parkway staff values the role that parents and families play as partners in their child's
education and encourages an open two-way communication so that the best possible learning
opportunities can be provided for each student. We know that the best education for our
children comes through the cooperative efforts of home and school.

those lines of communication. Take time to read this handbook portion of the agenda as it has

Parkway Public School
Student and Parent Handbook 2017 2018
Your Parkway Student and Parent Handbook has been designed to keep you informed about the expectations of
the school, as well as to help you to manage your time and plan your day so that you can take an active part in
controlling your academic achievement. The reference section contains important information for parents to help
their children with schooling and activities at Parkway.

To that end, Parkway School requires each student in Grades 3 to 5 to:

ask a parent/guardian to communicate regularly with the homeroom teacher.

attend school regularly, come prepared to learn.
listen to your teacher and be aware of what the teacher expects and when assignments are due.
check the class website and with your teacher to identify your assignments and materials required properly (as
appropriate for the grade level).
record your schedule and assignments for the day and record 'no homework' if you have no assignment for
that class (as appropriate for the grade level).
do your homework and bring it back to school on time.
use the class website to plan for extra-curricular activities, to set appointments, to celebrate accomplishments
and to record other personal commitments.

Teachers at Parkway will:

use the class website to teach students about time management, prioritizing tasks, goal setting, study skills,
keeping track of assignments, appointments, special events and days.
have students set monthly goals for improvement.
set aside time daily to facilitate and support students and to discuss expectations, record assignments, and
prioritize tasks, due dates, time required for completion.
check the class website on a daily basis to see that students are using them properly to identify assignments
and complete homework.
explain and discuss homework assignments.
celebrate the success of those students using the class website appropriately.
communicate with parents using the conversations, telephone calls, etc. (as appropriate for the grade level).

As partners in your child's learning, parents are expected to:

check the class website nightly to see the expectations for homework and to supervise your child to
complete those expectations.
use various communication tools for keeping the teacher and school informed.
send notes about absences and appointments.
every night ask your child what "goals" they achieved at school that day!
check the students bag for homework assigned, completed seatwork, pieces of art, newsletters, reading
record logs, calendars, special events, invitations and permission slips, library notices, etc.

for recess the first 20 minutes and then come in and eat for the last 20 minutes. Please refrain from bringing
peanut butter to school as we have students with life threatening allergies.

SAFE ARRIVAL
At the Peel District School Board, student absence reporting for all elementary aged
students is done through our SafeArrival reporting system. All parents/guardians must use
the system when reporting their childrens full day absences, late arrivals and/or early
departures from school via a new SafeArrival system.

SafeArrival will allow you to report your child(ren)s absences quickly and conveniently in
one of three ways:

1. You can call into an automated, interactive telephone system via a toll free number-1-855-209-6155.
2. You can log into a website, pdsb.schoolconnects.com, to access a SafeArrival Parent Portal. An
account can be set up to report absences.
3. You can download the SafeArrival mobile application for Apple and Android devices.

Parents who have provided the school with an email address will receive an email invitation from the following
address notifications@schoolconnectsweb.com prior to your child starting school. The invitation will include the
login information required to access the web portal and mobile app. Parents who do not have an email address
non file at the school can visit pdsb.schoolconnects.com and choose CREATE LOGIN to create your account and
receive login credentials. These login credentials are needed to login both online and with the mobile app.
Parents need to have a cell phone that is capable of receiving text messages to complete the setup
process. The cell phone number must be on file with the school. Please report your childs absences before
the start of the school day. Late arrivals and/or early departures should be reported as soon as possible.

Regular and punctual attendance are trademarks of a responsible and successful student and are important life
skills which we encourage. This is the responsibility of both the student and the parent or guardian. Frequent
and lengthy absences or tardiness can have negative effects on academic progress at all grade levels. If
your child will be away for a prolonged period of time, please let the office know in writing.

Attendance is taken at the beginning of classes in the morning and afternoon. When a student arrives at school
late, he/she should report to the office with their parent or guardian prior to going to class to sign-in so that
attendance records can be accurate. Students will be marked late if they enter the classroom after the class has
gathered together to begin instruction.

SIGN IN/SIGN OUT

To be excused from school, a student must present a note from the parent/guardian explaining the reason for
being excused. The note should be given to the homeroom teacher who will initial it. The student will bring the
note to the office and sign out before leaving school. Likewise, students must sign in at the office when returning
from appointments, etc. If it is necessary for a student to be dismissed from school before the regular dismissal
time, a note must be brought to the teacher. Parents who wish to pick up their child before regular dismissal
times are requested to report to the office rather than going directly to the classroom due to our Safe
Schools practices. Late arrivals and/or early departures should be reported as soon as possible
preferably through SafeArrival. Please plan your appointments and commitments to minimize the times that
you need to send your child late or sign them out early.

DRESS CODE
Students are asked to dress in a manner that demonstrates respect for themselves and others. Students may not
wear:
T-shirts that have questionable captions or inappropriate messages
Hats & scarves/bandannas may not be worn in the classrooms.

BICYCLES, ROLLER BLADES, SCOOTERS, SKATEBOARDS AND BASEBALL

BATS
Children may ride bicycles to school with the permission of their parents. Children are asked to lock bicycles while
at school as the school cannot take responsibility for any loss or damage which may occur. Children must walk
their bikes while on school property. The wearing of helmets is required by law. Baseball bats, hard baseballs,
roller blades, scooters and skateboards are not allowed on school property. Healies are not permitted on school
property. Other items that may not be brought to school include: trading cards as well as Lego figures.
Remember, if students bring valuable items to school and their loss would upset them, then they should not be
brought to school.

BUSING
Buses will arrive at the school at approximately 8:55 a.m. and will leave at approximately 3:40 p.m. In the
morning, students get off the bus and walk around to the playground, where they enter the school by the
appropriate doors. After school, bus students will assemble in the gym and leave for the buses via the front doors.
It is expected that students will act in a quiet, responsible manner at all times when waiting for or riding on the bus
in order to ensure the safety of all students. Students who are bused to school are to remain on school property
for lunch unless a note is written to the teacher by a parent for them to pick them up.

MEDICATION
It is the policy of the Peel Board of Education that school staff not be involved with the administering of
medication. Parents must assume the responsibility of making arrangements that will eliminate the need for
school personnel to be involved.

If in the opinion of a physician, a particular student requires medication during school hours in
order to remain in attendance, a special application form, available from the school office,
must be completed by the parent and authorized by the doctor. This includes any type of oral
medication, puffers and EPI PEN's. This application must be processed and approved prior
to the administration of the medication and must be updated each year. Upon approval,
parents are asked to bring the medication to the office rather than sending it with the child.

INSURANCE
You will be receiving insurance forms for your child(ren). Such insurance is not compulsory. If you decide to take
a policy for your child(ren), you are to send it directly to the insurance company.

LOST AND FOUND

It is suggested that all student possessions be labeled to avoid permanent loss. There is a lost and found box
outside the change room doors. Valuable articles that are found should be turned in and may be claimed at the
office. Students are not to bring valuable articles such as cell phones, cards, games, and yo-yo balls to school or
to carry any substantial amounts of money. The school cannot take responsibility for any items that are lost
or stolen.

PARKWAY COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers in the school provide additional human resources for improving instruction and
assisting in the development of better understanding and support for the work of the school.
Volunteers can enhance student attitudes and skills. Assistance can be provided in a variety
of ways: in the school library, word processing, writing stories, listening to students read, supervising on class
trips, preparing fundraising or learning materials to name a few.

Your assistance on either a scheduled or occasional basis is welcomed. If you have the time and interest to
become involved as a parent volunteer, please respond to the survey that will be sent home in September or
contact the school. To volunteer at Parkway School, all volunteers need to have had a current Criminal Record
Check (CRC). Appropriate forms can be picked up in the office.

PARKWAY SCHOOL COUNCIL

Parkway School is fortunate to have an involved and supportive School Council. As a Parkway parent, you are
welcome to become involved as a member of the sub-committee, Council, or by attending the scheduled
meetings. The School Council meets 6-8 times a year to discuss school issues, future activities, fundraising
needs, and to determine how to assist in the school and plan upcoming events. Notice of meeting dates are sent
home in the monthly school newsletter.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL

All visitors, guests and volunteers should enter the school through the main doors and must report to the
office and sign-in before proceeding elsewhere in the school. Visitors are required to wear a visitor's
badge while in the school. Please schedule appointment times if you wish to meet with any member of the
school staff.

USE OF TELEPHONE
The school telephone may be used by students in special instances, such as in an emergency.
In all cases, permission must be granted by the office personnel.

PARKING LOT SAFETY

At Parkway traffic safety is a major concern. For everyone's safety we ask the following:
Please follow the Kiss N' Ride rules.
Please do not drop students off at the back of the school or park in undesignated areas.
Park on a side street and walk to the school.
Obey all signs.

We appreciate your cooperation to ensure safety.

PARKWAY'S APPROACH TO DISCIPLINE

It is our belief that students have the right to learn and teachers have the right to teach in a safe and orderly
environment. For this reason, we have established a set of expectations and limits for behaviour that are reflective
of a caring, supportive and effective learning environment.

Appropriate behaviour is each person's RESPONSIBILITY. At all times, we expect people (students and
adults) to be responsible for their behaviour and to follow the guidelines for conduct that have been
established. By following these expectations which are based on the concept of "citizenship", every student will
have the opportunity to learn in the best possible learning environment.

Fundamental expectations for student conduct at Parkway are:

1. Appropriate behaviour that contributes to an orderly, secure learning environment and which does not
interfere with student safety or learning.
2. Punctual, regular school attendance. Being prepared for classes. Completion of required work.
3. Respect for school and/or individual property.
4. Respect for authority and counsel of school staff and volunteers.
5. Severe or repeated offenses may result in suspension.
6. Where discipline is required, administration will ensure that consequences are logical and take account
mitigating circumstances.
Evidence of substance abuse, possession or trafficking will result in suspension or expulsion. Evidence
of possession of weapons will also result in suspension or expulsion. The police will be involved.

PROBLEM SOLVING; DECISION MAKING

In order to enable students to deal with daily decisions effectively, we teach effective problem solving and decision
making strategies at each grade level and reinforce the learning of these skills in a positive and supportive
manner.
If a child experiences some difficulty with making good decisions, he or she will be involved in working to find
effective solutions. We use the "Stop Light Solution" model to assist students. It is our goal to teach the
students to use these steps independently. Teachers and parents can work together to reinforce good problem
solving skills. With this partnership, students will achieve the greatest success.

Solving Problems Strategies

STOP! Describe the problem. listen to others
consider others' feelings
THINK! Think about some possible say how you feel
solutions. What are the good consider others' viewpoints
and bad points of each remain calm
solution? agree to find a solution
Is it safe and fair? walk away to avoid fighting
ask the person to stop
GO! Do it. (Go back and rethink it if ask an adult for help
it doesn't work.)

CONSEQUENCES
Consequences for inappropriate behaviours are determined by the particular situation. Students who have not
assumed the responsibility for their behaviour may be involved in ANY of the following (these are not in a particular
order);
discussion with staff member
removal from classroom or activity
withdrawal of privilege
verbal or written apology
