Dear Parkway Families,

We would like to ensure your September start-up is successful and smooth. Please read this package as
well as the information on our School Web Site, Parkway School Handbook, Peel Board Information
and complete and return all forms as soon as possible.

I would also like to welcome back our School Council members. The School Council at Parkway P.S.
has held meetings this past year during the third Wednesday of most months between 7:00 and 8:00 pm.
If you are interested in any executive positions please review the Election information and dates and
complete the Parent School Council Candidate Nomination Form that is going home on Tuesday and
return to the school office by Thursday September 14, 2017 by 4:00 pm. Our first School Council
Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday October 4 in our Library from 7-8 pm. Your participation and
support is greatly appreciated by staff, parents and students.

The school itself is sparkling clean thanks to the hard work and commitment of our amazing custodial
team Mrs. Stimac, Mr. Christie, and our new Head Custodian, Mrs Pinneda. Our teachers have
been busy throughout the summer with professional development activities, preparing exciting learning
programs, and creating warm and inviting learning environments for our students.

We look forward to seeing you at our Meet the Teacher Night on Thursday October 5th.
The classrooms will be open from 6:00 7:00 p.m.

On Thursday September 28th, our whole school takes part in the Terry Fox Run to raise funds for
cancer research.

This year our Re-organization day/PA Day is Tuesday September 26th (no school for students).

Together, we are off to an exciting school year! Our strength is in working together as partners in your
child's education so that all children can be the best they can be. As always, your ideas and suggestions
for improvement are welcome. Remember, good things happen for our school when we work
together!

Sincerely,
David Abela

SCHOOL REORGANIZATION DAY

Tuesday, September 26, 2017 No School for Students

We may need to reorganize our classes in September. Should there be a need for the reorganization
due to increased or decreased enrolment, parents of affected students will be notified in advance.

BUSES & BUS ROUTES

Thank you for your help and patience as our bus routes are established. It is
important to remember that all Kindergarten and Grade 1 students must
have their bus tag visible on their backpack and must be met at the bus
by a parent or caregiver. Just a reminder that students may be required to
walk a distance to reach the bus stop.

Need answers about your childs bus?

Heres where to go: www.stopr.ca.

Click on Your Childs Busing Information and log in with your childs OEN number
(the 9-digit number on your childs report card), street number, choose Parkway for
the school, and your childs grade. Thats it! That will give you the most updated bus
information for both morning and afternoon bus runs. In addition, the site will give you
the phone numbers to call if you have further questions or concerns. If parents need
questions answered, please contact the bus company directly as the school does not
coordinate busing. Thank you!

LIBRARY BOOK SHELVING

We are fortunate to have one of the best school libraries in Peel. Any parents who
would like to volunteer their time to re-shelve books please contact Mrs. Jeffery at the
school.

SPECIAL LUNCHES
Special lunch days will begin in the near future. These special lunch days happen thanks
to the volunteer efforts of the Parkway School Council. All funds raised from these
events go directly back into providing Parkway Students with extra activities.

**Please make sure you child has plenty of food in their lunch each day as Parkway does not
provide extra food. Remember we have two breaks each day, so packing lunch plus two healthy
snacks is recommended. **

FOOD ALLERGY ALERT!

There are some students identified with severe food allergies at Parkway. It is very
important that these students do not come in contact with even trace amounts of these
foods or touch materials or equipment handled by a child who has eaten nut products.
We are asking all families not to send food containing nuts, peanut, peanut products
and their derivatives to school.
In advance, we want to thank those parents for consciously avoiding sending food items
which contain nut products and their byproducts to school. We realize that this requires additional effort
on everyones part to plan for nutritional breaks. Protecting our children with life thrteatening allergies is
a collective commitment by teachers, parents and students. Thank you for your continued support, co-
operation and understanding.

ATTENDANCE CHECK
Regular attendance at school is very important to learning and the development
of life habits. If a student arrives during or after morning announcements, he/she
will be marked late and must go to the office to sign in before going to class.
Students being picked up and dropped off during the school day must be signed
in/out at the main office. Parents of bus students are requested to advise the
classroom teacher in writing if they will not be using the bus at 3:30 p.m.

SAFE ARRIVAL REPORTING ABSENCES

All parents/guardians will need to report their childrens full-day absences, late arrivals and/or
early departures from school via a new SafeArrival system.

SafeArrival will allow you to report your child(ren)s absences quickly and conveniently in one of three
ways:

1. You can call into an automated, interactive telephone system via a toll free number:
1-855-209-6155
2. You can log into a website, pdsbschoolconnects.com, to access a SafeArrival Parent Portal.
An account can be set up to report absences.
3. You can download the SafeArrival mobile application for Apple and Android devices.

There is no longer an absence reporting phone line at school. As always, if you have any
questions or require any assistance, please contact the school.
DAILY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Parkway students participate in daily physical education (DPA).
For safety reasons we ask that students have a pair of indoor running shoes at school.
DPA activities may also take place outdoors, for this reason outdoor shoes that allow
for safe participation should be worn to school each day.

SAFETY AND SUPERVISION

School yard supervision starts at 8:55 a.m. before school. Students coming to
school in the morning should not be arriving at school prior to 8:55 a.m. to ensure
their safety. Dogs are not allowed on school property. Please keep your pets at
home. Students are not to leave school property during nutrition breaks unless
you have indicated this at the beginning of the year. If you wish to pick your child up for a nutrition
break, a written note to the classroom teacher is required for students that do not usually go home
during nutrition breaks.

TRAFFIC USING THE SCHOOL DRIVEWAY

Our school driveway is a ONE WAY SYSTEM. Vehicles may only enter at the east end and
exit at the west end. Your cooperation in obeying the traffic signs is greatly appreciated.
Parents dropping off and picking up children should NOT park in the driveway since
this blocks traffic. It is important to note that the driveway in front of the school is a Fire
Route and is a no parking/stopping zone. Cars that park in this area may be ticketed.

VOLUNTEERS

Parents play an important role in the development and education of

their children and in the success of the school community. At Parkway,
we welcome and encourage the participation of parents and community
members, and are grateful for the countless hours our volunteers
contribute throughout the school year.

To volunteer at our school, you must complete a short interview and a criminal record check. A
police background check is required for all school volunteers in Ontario. Even if you want to
accompany your child on a field trip, you need this background check.

Once you have completed the process, you are on file with the Peel District School Board as being a
school volunteer. All returning volunteers will be mailed an Offence Declaration Form that must be
filled out and returned to the board office each year. You will not be able to volunteer with the Peel
board until you have returned this form.

If you have any questions about criminal record checks or the offence declaration form, please call the
board office at 905-890-1010 ext. 2488.

PARENTS IN THE SCHOOL

We want Parkway Public School to be a welcoming place for parents and visitors. The most important
issue staff at the school face is student safety. How do we best protect our children, and still have a
school that is welcoming to parents? We have put a procedure in place that we are asking parents to
follow. At the end of the day if you are picking up your child at school, please wait outside their
exit door. Please do not walk down the hall to their classroom. In the case of a school bus
cancellation due to inclement weather, all students will be dismissed from the gym. If parents or
visitors are entering the school at other hours, you must report to the office first to sign in and
receive a Parkway visitors badge. This badge identifies you as a welcomed guest to both the staff
and the children. Please note that the student washrooms are only for the children. At no point in
time should parents or visitors be in the student washrooms. If visitors need to use the washroom they
are asked to use the adult washrooms located next to the office. Thank you for your co-operation.

RESPECTFUL USE OF SCHOOL PROPERTY

We wish to reinforce the expectation that students treat all computer equipment, textbooks, and related
school materials with great care. Such materials are very expensive to purchase. Any deliberate
damage to these materials will result in requests for the family to reimburse the costs.
