Overwhelmed by massive arrivals, Bali Airport hopes to install Immigration
autogate by 2018

Immigration can hardly keep up
with the massive amount of
people coming through Bali
Ngurah Rai International Airport
everyday, so plans to install
some autogates are in the
works.
The government has been
pushing so hard to get foreign
arrivals up, with the aim of
meeting ambitious annual
targets, but the islands
infrastructure isnt moving quite
as quickly.
In the past two monthsno
doubt, peak season in Balias
many as 17,000 foreign travelers
are coming through the airport a
day, according to head of
Immigration Class I Ngurah Rai,
Ari Budijanto.
Making it even harder on
Immigration staff is that flights
often land close together, with

waves of travelers coming in at
around the same time.
The problem is the arrivals are
not spread out, but occur only at
certain hours, Budijanto told
Tribun Bali on Tuesday.
For instance, from around
9-11am, around 10 aircraft
carrying about 3,500 passengers
arrive.
And increasing the amount of
people even more is that plans
are getting bigger. The average
flight used to contain 150
passengers, but now wide-body
aircraft carry around 300-350
passengers, significantly
increasing the volume of people
arriving in Bali at one time, says
Budijanto.
Not to mention in the afternoon
from 3pm to 5pm, about 15
wide-bodied aircraft plus charter
planes, about 19-20 aircraft
come in. Imagine, within two
hours, our officers must conduct
checks on 4,500 foreigners,
Budjianto added.
There are currently 26
Immigration counters at Ngurah
Rai Airport, broken down into 13
counters at arrivals and 13 at

departures. Each counter has
two Immigration officials,
according to Budijanto.
To better deal with the heavy
flows of foreigners coming
through Immigration,
Budijanto says he hopes
automated gates can be
installed.
Hopefully by the end of the
year, the autogates can be
procured, so as early as
2018 they can be in
use, Budijanto said.
As with every big project
in Bali, like the
underpass meant to be
dug out from under the
roundabout in front of
the airport, the big
eyesore sculpture
construction at GWK,
and the cruise ship
terminal in Benoa, the hope
is the autogate will be ready
for the 2018 IMF and
World Bank meeting set
for Oct.
2018.

Indonesian tourism minister praises Shakira for promoting Bali after singer posts dance clip from Zumba

Colombian singer, Shakira, posted a
dance clip, apparently shot in Bali and
Indonesias tourism minster seems
thrilled.
The international superstar shared the
video to Instagram two days ago, which
was a repost from fellow Colombian,
Beto Perez, the founder of the hit
dance exercise, Zumba.
In the video, Perez and four other
backup dancers dressed in traditional
Balinese dance attire, show Zumba
choreography to Shakiras new song,
Perro Fiel. Featuring Nicky Jam, the
song is off Shakiras new album El
Dorado and is set for release as a
single on Sept .8. The backdrop looks
like the clip could have been shot
around Balis Sanur area.

Man killed spear fishing in
Nusa Penida, Klungkung
government plans to build
watchtowers on Penida and
Lembongan after latest of
coastal accidents
A number of drowning accidents in
Balis Nusa Penida has lead the local
government to put up towers for
lifeguards, the latest accident being the
drowning of a man who was
spearfishing on Wednesday last week.
Balis Klungkung regency is allocating
Rp 1.7 billion (USD 127k) towards
building watchtowers in the regency, to
be erected on mainland Bali and on
Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan
islands.
Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are
two small islands located off the
southeast coast of mainland Bali.
Though the islands have been gaining
popularity with tourists in the last
several years, the infrastructure
remains limited, especially on Penida.
To be better prepared for future
accidents, Klungkung plans to build
watchtowers in three different points,
the first of which will be in Kusamba,
mainland Bali. The other two towers will
be on the Batunuggal Coast of Nusa
Penida and in the village of Jungutbatu
on Nusa Lembongan, says Klungkung
Regional Disaster Management Agency
(BPBD) director Putu Widiada.
On Sept. 9, work on the watchtowers
will begin. The budget for the three
towers is Rp 1.7 billion, Putu Widiada
said on Friday.
Balawista (lifeguards) will be posted at
the towers to maximize monitoring on
the coast, according to Widiada. Each
tower will eventually have 30 Balawista
officers on duty, though for the
remainder of this year, only five
lifeguards will be assigned to each
tower because of budget constraints,
says the director.
BPBD Klunkung will also procure dive
equipment for the towers because of
the nature of some rescue missions.
In some cases, the evacuation of the
victims must be done by diving.
Therefore diving equipment should be
available. Meanwhile, as this time, we
only have inflatable boats.
There have been five recorded marine-
related accidents in Klungkung this
year, based on data collected by local
newspaper Tribun Bali.

The first was in March, when a collision
involving a small boat and a fishing boat
off Nusa Lembongan and neighboring
small island Nusa Ceningan, left one
person dead.
In March, a tourist from New Zealand
was carried out to sea by a wave at
Angels Billabong in Penida. The kiwis
body was found four days later.
Another was when a a young man from
Sumba was lost after falling from the
cliffs of Ceningan in May. His body was
never recovered.
Just in August, a pair of tourists, one
from South Africa and one from
Denmark were stranded at an islet
when spearfishing at Penidas Atuh
Beach. They were pulled out by a
strong current but were fortunately able
to be rescued after 17 hours.
While the most recent was just on
Wednesday when a 32-year-old from
Sanur was diving and spearfishing in
the waters of Nusa Penida. He was
allegedly dragged down by a fish he
had speared, some 50 meters. His body
was found and evacuated the following
day.

Expats deported from Bali for moonlighting

as dive instructors, outside their work permits

Singaraja Immigration in North Bali has deported two

foreigners for moonlighting as dive instructors, outside the
capacity of their work permits.

The foreigners, identified as a 43-year-old Canadian man

and a 29-year-old Danish woman, had Indonesian KITAS
work permits, but for different jobs, which didnt exactly
involve teaching scuba. The Canadian had a KITAS in his
role as president director of a tourist attraction, while the
Danish woman had her permit to work as a sales marketing
manager, according to head of Singaraja Class II
Immigration office, Victor Manurung.

Foreigners working in Indonesia must be working in

accordance with what is submitted to the manpower office,
related to the job title. On their KITAS permits, it is listed as
president director and sales marketing manager, but they
were caught working as dive instructors. Its a shame for
local dive instructors who cannot get work, Manurung said
on Wednesday, as quoted by Sindo News.

Because the two were found violating their KITAS terms, the
work permits were immediately revoked and cancelled, said
Manurung.

The Singaraja Immigration office will continue to investigate

if there are more similar cases of foreigners working in their
jurisdiction, which includes Buleleng, Jembrana, and
Karangasem, according to Manurung.

We are still investigating, but we will continue to monitor

foreign nationals in the area, he said.

masking the smell of your body. This
makes you virtually invisible to
annoying insects. Just because all
natural mosquito and insect repellents
are made from safe organic ingredients
does not mean that they are any less
effective than their toxic counterparts.

effective, if not more so, than any of the

comes to keeping bugs and flying

mosquito repelling properties. For this
recipe, use 100 drops of essential oils
(in your own custom blend if you like) of body (neck, underarms, behind
mixed with coconut oil. ears, etc.) to repel insects.
Homemade Bug Spray:
30 drops geranium essential oil
Rub fresh or dried leaves of anything
30 drops citronella essential oil in the mint family all over skin to repel
20 drops tea tree essential oil insects (peppermint, spearmint,
20 drops lavender essential oil catnip, pennyroyal, etc. or citronella,
10 drops rosemary essential oil lemongrass, etc.) Basil is also said to
