a diverse population that is three times the size of the United States but one-third the
physical size, India has the second largest population in the world.
the number of people who live in poverty is still highly disproportionate to the number of
people who are middle-income, with a combined rate of over 52% of both rural and
urban poor.
Children in 100 million homes in the country lack water, and one out of every two
children are malnourished.
India's water crisis is often attributed to lack of government planning, increased
corporate privatization, industrial and human waste and government corruption

Approximately 1 billion litres of raw, untreated sewage are dumped in the river on a daily
basis. The amount has more than doubled in the last 20 years and experts predict
another 100% increase in the following 20 years.
The rapid explosion of India's population in the last 25 years coupled with lax regulations
on industry has put a huge strain on the river leading to an explosion in Ganges river
pollution.
Thousands of bodies are cremated on the banks of the river yearly with many being
released into the river with hopes that their souls may have a direct path to heaven.

Flint, Michigan:
where 41.2% of residents live below the poverty line and the median household income
is $24,862
In order to reduce the water fund shortfall, the city switched water sources in 2014.
Historically, the water in the Flint River downstream of Flint has been of poor quality, and
was severely degraded during the 1970s, due to "the presence of fecal coliform bacteria,
low dissolved oxygen, plant nutrients, oils, and toxic substances."
The river water was found to be 19 times more corrosive than water from Detroit, which
was from Lake Huron, according to a study by Virginia Tech.
The city announces fecal coliform bacterium has been detected in the water supply,
prompting a boil water advisory for a neighborhood on the west side of Flint. The city
boosts the amount of chlorine in the water and flushes the system.
The Detroit Free Press reports children are developing rashes and suffering from
mysterious illnesses.

Theres More Than the Lead in Flints Water. In addition to exposing every child in the
city of Flint to lead poisoning on a daily basis, there appears to be a number of other
diseases we may be hearing about in the months ahead. The number of cases in Flint of
Legionnaires Disease has increased tenfold since the switch to the river water.
Eighty-seven people have come down with it, and at least ten have died. In the five
years before the river water, not a single person in Flint had died of Legionnaires
Disease. Doctors are now discovering that another half-dozen toxins are being found in
the blood of Flints citizens, causing concern that there are other health catastrophes
which may soon come to light.
The water itself comes from Lake Huron, the third largest body of fresh water in the
world. It is a glacial lake formed over 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age and it is
still fed by pure underground springs. Flint is geographically the last place on Earth
where one should be drinking poisoned water.
