(b) Explain the compatibility conditions and their physical significance. Derive Beltrami
Mitchell compatibility equations in plane strain.
(c) Derive the equations of Equilibrium in 2D case.
OR
2. (a) Define principal stresses and principal directions . Show that the determination of principal
stresses and principal directions reduces to the solution of an Eigen value problem. Discuss
the existence of three real valued solutions for principal stresses.
(b) Derive the transformation equations for 3D stress state
(c) Explain stress ellipsoid.
3. (a) Discuss plane stress and plane strain problems with examples.

(b) Obtain the expression for the stresses of a simply supported beam of span l, width
2Csubjected to uniform load intensity q using stress function.
(c) A cantilever beam of span l, unit width, depth 2C is subjected to a concentrated load P at
the free end. Assuming a stress function = Axy + (B/6 xy3, determine the stresses
xx, yy and xy. Give your comments on results obtained.
5. (a) Derive the stress components of a rotating circular disc of uniform thickness with a central

inscribed circular section (radius equal to the minor axis b of the ellipse). Which takes the
greater torque for the same allowable stress?

7. (a) Discuss the general yielding mode of failure. Explain:- elastic-perfectly plastic; nonlinear;
lower bound load; and upper bound for the general yielding mode of failure. Distinguish
fully plastic load for an axial member and the plastic moment for a beam subjected to pure
bending.
(b) Sketch the stress-strain distribution for elastic plastic yielding of a beam. Also calculate the
bending moment in the elastic-plastic state. The beam has rectangular cross section with
width b and height h.
(c) At a critical point in a machine part, the nonzero components of stress are xx=120MPa,
yy=50MPa, and xy=50MPa. The yield strength of the material is y=300MPa.
Determine the factor of safety in the design based on the maximum shear stress criterion
and that based on the octahedral shear stress criterion.
