Chapter 2 Tutorials 2.14 - 2.

21

Hints

2.14 Ensure Froude similarity (and assume the Re is similar and does not affect CD although this is
not always the case as mentioned in class) Find Vm as per example 2.4

then

Drag force = CDAV2 (derived in chapter 3)

Force Ratio = FP/Fm = CDAV2(protype)/ CDAV2(model)

CD and are the same for both, and area = L2 thus

Force Ratio = Lp2Vp2/ Lm2Vm2

2.15 Ensure Weber similarity and use Table A1 @ 20oC to get surface tension and density of water

2.16 As per 2.14 we assume that CDm= CDp and calculate force ratio

2.17 As per 2.13

2.18 (a) Ensure Re similarity

(b) Ensure Re similarity and use tables A2 and A1 for properties

2.19 Answers in Text incorrect

From geometric similarity Dm = 0.0703m
Ensure Re similarity and then Vm = 118.5m/s
Assume CDm = CDp and using the drag force equation from 2.14 we find Fm = Fp = xN

2.20 (a) Ensure Fr similarity

(b) Fr is independent of density, so if glycerine is use the velocity remains as in (a)

2.21 Use table A3 to find properties of prototype at 10000m, and table A2 for properties of
model at 20oC
Ensure Ma similarity to find Vm
Ensure Re silmilarity to find density of air on model (ie in wind tunnel) (it is assumed that the
effect of the density is minimal and is not taken into account in this problem)
P = RT to calculate Pa
