each of the numbered blanks from 36 to 42.
Glaciers are large masses of ice on land that show evidence of past or present movement. They grow by the gradual
transformation of snow into glacier ice.
A fresh snowfall is a fluffy mass of loosely packed snowflakes, small delicate ice crystal grown in the atmosphere. As
the snow ages on the ground for weeks or months, the crystals shrink and become more compact, and the whole mass
becomes squeezed together into a more dense form, granular snow. As new snow falls and buries the older snow, the layers
of granular snow further compact to form firm, a much denser kind of snow, usually a year or more old, which has little pore
space. Further burial and slow cementationa process by which crystals become bound together in a mosaic of intergrown
ice crystalsfinally produce solid glacial ice. In this process of recrystallization, the growth of new crystals at the expense of
old ones, the percentage of air is reduced from about 90 percent for snowflakes to less than 20 percent for glacier ice. The
whole process may take as little as a few years, but more likely ten or twenty years or longer. The snow is usually many
meters deep by the time the lower layers art convened into ice.
In cold glaciers those formed in the coldest regions of the Earth, the entire mass of ice is at temperatures below the
melting point and no free water exists. In temperate glaciers, the ice is at the melting point at every pressure level within the
glacier, and free water is present as small drops or as larger accumulations in tunnels within or beneath the ice. (2Formation of
a glacier is complete when ice has accumulated to a thickness (and thus weight) sufficient to make it move slowly under
pressure, in much the same way that solid rock deep within the Earth can change shape without breaking. Once that point is
reached, the ice flows downhill, either as a tongue of ice filling a valley or as thick ice cap that
flows out in directions from the highest central area where the most snow accumulates. The up down leads to the eventual
melting of ice.

Archaeological discoveries have led some scholars to believe that the first Mesopotamian inventors of writing may
have been a people the later Babylonians called Subarians. According to tradition, they came from the north and moved into
Uruk in the south. By about 3100B.C, They were apparently subjugated in southern Mesopotamia by the Sumerians, whose
name became synonymous with the region immediately north of the Persian Gulf, in the fertile lower valleys of the Tigris and
Euphrates. Here the Sumerians were already well established by the year 3000B.C. They had invented bronze, an alloy that
could be cast in molds, out of which they made tools and weapons. They lived in cities, and they had begun to acquire and use
capital. Perhaps most important, the Sumerians adapted writing (probably from the Subarians) into a flexible tool of
(10)communication. Archaeologists have known about the Sumerians for over 150 years. Archaeologists working at Nineveh in
northern Mesopotamia in the mid-nineteenth century found many inscribed clay tablets. Some they could decipher because
the language was a Semitic one (Akkadian), on which scholars had already been working for a generation. But other tablets
were inscribed in another language (15)that was not Semitic and previously unknown. Because these inscriptions mad
reference to the king of Summer and Akkad, a scholar suggested that the mew language be called Sumerian.
But it was not until the 1890's that archaeologists excavating in city-states well to the south of Nieveh found many
thousands of tablets inscribed in Sumerian only. Because the Akkadians thought of Sumerian as a classical language (as
ancient Greek and Latin are considered today), (20)they taught it to educated persons and they inscribed vocabulary,
translation exercised, and other study aids on tablets. Working from known Akkadian to previously unknown Sumerian,
scholars since the 1890's have learned how to read the Sumerian language moderately well. Vast quantities of tablets in
Sumerian have been unearthed during the intervening years from numerous sites.

depended mainly on predecessors from their homeland to help them start a new life. In the late 19 th and early 20th centuries,
several European nations instituted public welfare programs. But such a movement was slow to take hold in the United States
because the rapid pace of industrialization and the ready availability of farmland seemed to confirm the belief that anyone who
was willing to work could find a job. Most of the programs during the Depression era were temporary relief measures, but one
of the programs, Social Security, has become an American institution . Paid for by deduction from the paychecks of working
people, Social Security ensures that retired persons receive a modest monthly income and also provides unemployment
insurance, disability insurance, and other assistance to those who need it. Social Security ensures that retires persons can
start at the age of 62, but many wait until the age of 65 when the payments are slightly higher. Recently, there has been
concern that the social Security Fund may not have enough money to fulfill its obligations in the 21th century, when the
population of elderly Americans is expected to increase dramatically. Policy makers have proposed various ways to make up
the anticipated deficit, but a long-term solution is still being debated. In the years since President Franklin Roosevelt, other
American presidents have established assistance programs. These include Medicaid and Medicare, food stamps, certificates
that people can use to purchase food, and public housing which is built at federal expense and made available to persons on
low incomes. Needy Americans can also turn to sources other than the government for help. A broad spectrum of private
charities and voluntary organizations is available. Volunteerism is on the rise in the United States, especially among retired
persons. It is estimated that 50 percent of Americans over the age of 18 do volunteer work, and nearly 75 percent of US

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions.
Human Nutrition is the study of how food affects the health and survival of the human body. Human beings require
food to grow, reproduce, and maintain good health. Without food, our body could not stay warm, build or repair tissue, or
maintain the heartbeat. Eating the right foods can help us avoid certain diseases or recover faster when illness occurs. These
and other important functions are fueled by chemical substances in our food called nutrients . Nutrients are classified as
carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water.
When we eat a meal, nutrients are released from food through digestion. Digestion begins in the mouth by the action
of chewing and the chemical activity of saliva, a watery fluid that contains enzymes, certain proteins that help break down food.
Further digestion occur as food travels through the stomach and the small intestine, where digestive enzymes and acids
liquefy food and muscle contractions push it along the digestive tract. Nutrients are absorbed from the inside of the small
intestine into bloodstream and carried to the sites in the body where they are needed. At these sites, several chemical
reactions occur, which ensures the growth and function of body tissues. The parts of the foods that are not absorbed continue
to move down the intestinal tract and are eliminated from the body as feces.
Once digested, carbohydrates, proteins, and fats provide the body with energy it needs to maintain its many
functions. Scientists measure this energy in kilocalories, the amount of energy needed to raise one kilogram of water one
degree Celsius. In nutrition discussions, scientists use the term calorie instead of kilocalorie as the standard unit of measure in
nutrition.
Nutrients are classified as essential or nonessential. Nonessential nutrients are manufactured in the body and do not need to
be obtained from food. Examples include cholesterol, a fatlike substance present in all animal cells. Essential nutrients must be
obtained from food sources, because the body either does not produce them or produce them in amount too small to maintain
growth and health. Essential nutrients include water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats vitamins, and minerals.
An individual needs varying amounts of each essential nutrient depending upon such factors as gender and age.
Specific health conditions, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, illness or drug use, make unusual demands o the body and
increase its need for nutrients. Dietary guidelines, which take many of these factors into account, provide general guidance in
meeting daily nutritional needs.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 36 to 42.
We are descendents of the ice age. Periods of glaciation have spanned the whole of human existence for the past 2 million
years. The rapid melting of the continental glaciers at the end of the last ice age spurred one of the most dramatic climate
changes in the history of the planet. During this interglacial time, people were caught up in a cataclysm of human
accomplishment, including the development of agriculture and animal husbandry. Over the past few thousand years, the
Earths climate has been extraordinarily beneficial, and humans have prospered exceedingly well under a benign atmosphere.
Ice ages have dramatically affected life on Earth almost from the very beginning. It is even possible that life itself
significantly changed the climate. All living organisms pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and eventually store it in
sedimentary rocks within the Earths crust. If too much carbon dioxide is lost, too much heat escapes out into the atmosphere.
This can cause the Earth to cool enough for glacial ice to spread across the land.
In general the reduction of the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been equalized by the input of carbon dioxide
from such events as volcanic eruptions. Man, however, is upsetting the equation by burning fossil fuels and destroying tropical
rain forests, both of which release stored carbon dioxide. This energizes the greenhouse effect and causes the Earth to warm.
If the warming is significant enough, the polar ice caps eventually melt.
The polar ice caps drive the atmospheric and oceanic circulation systems. Should the ice caps melt, warm tropical waters
could circle the globe and make this a very warm, inhospitable planet.
Over the past century, the global sea level has apparently risen upwards of 6 inches, mainly because of the melting of
glacial ice. If present warming trends continue, the seas could rise as much as 6 feet by the next century. This could flood
coastal cities and fertile river deltas, where half the human population lives. Delicate wetlands, where many marine species
breed, also would be reclaimed by the sea. In addition, more frequent and severe storms would batter coastal areas, adding to
the disaster of the higher seas.
The continued melting of the great ice sheets in polar regions could cause massiveamounts of ice to crash into the ocean.
This would further raise the sea level and release more ice, which could more than double the area of sea ice and increase
correspondingly the amount of sunlight reflected back into space. The cycle would then be complete as this could cause global
temperatures to drop enough to initiate another ice age.
Question 36. According to the passage, carbon dioxide is stored in each of the following EXCEPT_____.
A. polar ice caps. B. sedimentary rocks. C. rain forests. D. fossil fuel.
Question 37. What does the final paragraph of the passage mainly discuss?
A. The relationship between the ocean and the sun B. The amount of sunlight reflected into space
C. A rise in global temperatures D. The conditions that could lead to an ice age
Question 38. According to the passage, what is the relationship between carbon dioxide and the Earths climate?
A. Carbon dioxide, which is trapped in glacial ice, is released when warm temperatures cause the ice melt.
B. The greenhouse effect, which leads to the warming of the climate, is result of too much carbon store in the Earths crust.
C. Rain causes carbon dioxide to be washed out of the atmosphere and into the ocean.
D. An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide results in the warming of the climate.
Question 39. It can be inferred from the passage that the development of agriculture
A. preceded the development of animal husbandry. B. withstood vast changes in the Earths climate.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 43 to 50.
Before the mid-nineteenth century, people in the United States ate most foods only in season. Drying, smoking and salting
could preserve meat for a short time, but the availability of fresh meat, like that of fresh milk, was very limited; there was no
way to prevent spoilage. But in 1810, a French inventor named Nicolas Appert developed the cooking-and-sealing process of
canning. And in the 1850s an American named Gail Borden developed a means of condensing and preserving milk. Canned
goods and condensed milk became more common during the 1860s, but supplies remained low because cans had to be
made by hand. By 1880, however, inventors had fashioned stamping and soldering machines that mass-produced cans from
tinplate. Suddenly all kinds of food could be preserved and bought at all times of the year.
Other trends and inventions had also helped make it possible for Americans to vary their daily diets. Growing urban
population created demand that encouraged fruit and vegetable farmers to raise more produce. Railroad refrigerator cars
enabled growers and meat packers to ship perishables great distances and to preserve them for longer periods. Thus, by the
1890s, northern city dwellers could enjoy southern and western strawberries, grapes, and tomatoes, previously available for a
month at most, for up to six months of the year. In addition, increased use of iceboxes enabled families to store perishables.
As easy means of producing ice commercially had been invented in the 1870s, and by 1900 the nation had more than two
thousand commercial ice plants, most of which made home deliveries. The icebox became a fixture in most homes and
remained so until the mechanized refrigerator replaced it in the 1920s and 1930s.
Almost everyone now had a more diversified diet. Some people continued to eat mainly foods that were heavily in
starches or carbohydrates, and not everyone could afford meat. Nevertheless, many families could take advantage of
previously unavailable fruits, vegetables, and dairy products to achieve more varied fare.

It is very difficult to succeed in the music business; nine out of ten bands that release a first record fail to produce a second.
Surviving in the music industry requires luck and patience, but most of all it requires an intricate knowledge of how a record
company functions. The process begins when a representative of a company's Artist and Repertoire (A &R) department visits
bars and night clubs, scouting for young, talented bands. After the representative identifies a promising band, he or she will
work to negotiate a contract with that band. The signing of this recording contract is a slow process. A company will spend a
long time investigating the band itself as well as current trends in popular music. During this period, it is important that a band
reciprocate with an investigation of its own, learning as much as possible about the record company and making personal
connections within the different departments that will handle their recordings. Once a band has signed the contract and, has
finished recording an album, the Publicity and Promotions department takes over. This department decides whether or not to
mass produce and market the band's album. Most bands fail to make personal contacts in this second department, thus losing
their voice in the important final process of producing and marketing their album. This loss of nice often contributes to the
band's failure as a recording group.

Carnegie Hall, the famous concert hall in New York, has again undergone a restoration. While this is not the first, it is
certainly the most extensive in the building's history. As a result of this new restoration, Carnegie Hall once again has the
quality of sound that it has when it was first built.
Carnegie Hall owes its existence to Andrew Carnegie, the wealthy owner of a steel company in the late 1800s. The hall
was finished in 1891 and quickly gained a reputation as an excellent performing arts hall where accomplished musicians
gained fame. Despite its reputation, however, the concert hall suffered from several detrimental renovations over the years.
During the Great Depression, when fewer people could afford to attend performances, the directors sold part of the building to
commercial businesses. As a result, a coffee shop was opened in one corner of the building, for which the builders replaced
the brick and terra cotta walls with windowpanes. A renovation in 1946 seriously damaged the acoustical quality of the hall
when the markers of the film Carnegie Hall cut a gaping hole in the dome of the ceiling to allow for lights and air vents. The
hole was later covered with short curtains and a fake ceiling, but the hall never sounded the same afterwards.
In 1960, the violist Isaac Stern became involved in restoring the hall after a group of real estate developers unveiled
plans to demolish Carnegie Hall and build a high-rise office building on the site. This threat spurred Stern to rally public
support for Carnegie Hall and encouraged the city of New York to buy the property. The movement was successful, and the
concert hall is now owned by the city. In the current restoration, builders tested each new material for its sound qualities, and
they replaced the hole in the ceiling with a dome. The builders also restored the outer walls to their original appearance and
closed the coffee shop. Carnegie Hall has never sounded better, and its prospects for the future have never looked more
promising.
