Pilot Scale Test Proposal

1. Background and process

Alfa Laval has been approached by JSPL Raigarh for conducting a pilot scale
decanter test for Blast Furnace Dust and Sludge Dewatering.

The dust from Blast Furnace gas scrubbing is composed of oxides of iron, calcium,
silica, magnesium, aluminium as well as carbon in the form of coke particles.

Approximately 1 4% of the hot metal production appears as sludge. The Blast

furnace at JSPL is producing 1200 t/day of molten iron & shall produce up to 2 t/hr
of dust.
Virtually all of the waste water generated from blast furnace operations is direct
contact water used in the gas coolers and high efficiency wet scrubbers that clean
the blast furnace gas. Typical water requirements are 25 m per ton of iron.

At JSPL the water produced is around 420 m3/d

This water is then blended with alum & Polyelectrolyte BASF Magna fine as shown
below-

These waters are treated by thickeners to remove suspended solids as shown

below

and the overflows are sent back to the gas scrubbers after passing it through
cooling tower.

The under flow is sent to power plant for further processing.

The decanter trial is conducted on this under flow.

The final blowdown from the recirculated system is then treated to

remove additional heavy metals and similar pollutants.
The thickened solids underflow from the clarifier together with the blowdown solids
are passed to Decanter centrifuges for dewatering. The dewatered sludge from the
Decanters is either sent back to the sinter plant or briquetted with other residues
and recycled to the blast furnace.

28th April 2011

Flow rate fixed to 500 & m/c operated continuously from trials taken with
following settings
Pully Dia 115 Delta n -11.6
Plate dam radius- 65 mm
Polydosing 70-80 LPH
Centrate folw 1250,720,420 LPH
No solid cake collected.

29th April 2011

Decanter opened for changing pully & observed that the GS clutch was
disengaged and decanter found to be choked.

30th April 2011

Following settings were changed

JSPL by 1st May 2011.

6. Discussion

JSPL to confirm the following

1. Feed PPM
2. Flow to be handled in decanter
3. Centrate / decanter water outlet quality desired
Based on the above trial results ALIL shall quote decanter suitable
for JSPL requirements.
JSPL asked to provide the details for for the Blast Furnace dust
application with contact details & performance parameters.
