LEXİCAL APPROACH

What I learned was that :Lexical approach is based on word and word phrases ,in contrast to
grammar based approaches. It deals with developing learners proficiency with lexis(words) and
raising learners language awareness. it is mostly communication based approach. According to
piooners of this approach language is mostly based on meaningful word phrases(chunks). Moreover
developing learners’ ability to chunk language enable them to be successful. Moreover language
should be based on the idea that language production is the piecing together of ready made units
appropriate for particular situation. Activities used to develop learners chunk knowledge should
involve these:

 Extensive reading and listening in the target language.


 First –second language comparisons and translation carried out chunk for chunk not word for
word.
 Repetition and recycling activities such as: summarising the text orally one day and again e
few days.
 Guessing the meaning of the vocabulary items from the context.
 Noticing and recording language patterns and collocations.
 Working with dictionaries and other reference tools.
 Working with language corpuses created by the teacher for use in the classrooms and
accessible on the internet.

Actually lexical approach does not make radical changes in the classroom rather it lead change
in the teacher’s mind. The activities which is the suitable for lexical approach must be directed
naturally occurring language.

What I had difficulty in understanding was that: learning lexis and giving the whole importance
to studying on chunks and collocations is not enough for learning target language. At some point
grammar patterns should be taught in order to built up correct knowledge of the language.

I think I should use some aspects of lexical approach such as helping students to develop their
ability to create word phrases and use them instead of giving them isolated vocabulary items.
Also extensive reading and listening activities are the key points for me to take into account for
my teaching style.
