SY66utilizes8live,ormacroknobsthatcanbeUnipolar(01)orBipolar(1+1).Theseare
virtualcontrolsthatcanbeassignedtonearlyanyparameterinthesynthesizerandeffects.To
startoutitisrecommendedthatyouconnectahardwarecontrollerwith8knobs,oraKore

controller.IntheBviewLIVEpageyouwillsee8knobs.Midilearnorassignthese8knobsto
yourhardwarecontroller,thensaveSY66.Asyouloadsnapshots,yourhardwareknobswill
nowchangefunctiondependingonhowthesnapshotwasdesigned.Theassignedfunctions
aredocumentedabovetheknobsandareintendedforquickvariations,performanceandsound
design.Additionally,mostsnapshotsincludeassignmentsforthemodwheelforinstant
tweaking.


MasterVelocityCurve: ThemastervelocitycurvefoundintheupperrightoftheAviewisone
ofthemostimportantsettingsintheinstrument.Itaffectstheoverallresponsesensitivitytothe
midicontrollerbeingused.Trychangingthissettingtogettheoptimalplayingsensitivityand
keepitinmindwhenauditioningsnapshots.Dependingonwhetheryouuseaweightedor
organtouchkeyboard,drumpadsoramidiguitarcontrolleryoucanmakeadjustmentsthatare
mostsuitableforthehardwarebeingused.Thesnapshotsdochangethemastercurve
sometimesandthismaybedisabledbyselectingthemastercurvesetting,viewingits
propertiesandselectingsnapisolate.

Afewsnapshotsrelyonreceivingmidiclockandsongposition,sotryrunningthereaktor
transporttoheartheseproperly.

SomesnapshotsuseaconsiderableamountofCPU.Itisnotrecommendedduethestructure
ofSY66tochangethedefaultsettingof8voicestoreducecpuimpact.Instead,tryloweringthe
Reaktorsamplerate.Ifyouneedmorethan8notesofpolyphonythiscanbechangedinthe
instrumentproperties,butbewarnedtheprovidedsnapshotswillnotfunctionproperly.

WhenmakingyourownsnapshotstrystartingwiththeincludedINITsnapshotthatreflectsmost
settingsandcontrollersdefaultvaluesandstates.

IfyouarefamiliarwithFMsynthesisyoumighttryauditioningthefollowing3snapshotsthat

ThecontrolsandsettingsforSY66areorganizedinreaktorpanelviews,andpagesusing
stackedmacros.TheApanelviewcontainsoperators,matrix,masteroutput,masterfilter,and
voicecontrols.Withintheoperators,thereareareasoftheinterfacethatmaychange
dependingonwhatfilterisselected.

BPanel
The viewcontainsmultiplepagesaccessedwithinterfacebuttons:
Mapper: ListsrowsofmenususedformakingmodulationassignmentsbetweenEvent
Generators(EG)andParameterDestinationsinoperators,feedbackmatrix,master
controls,andeffects.Allmapperassignmentsarestoredandrecalledwithsnapshots.
LFO/ADSR: PresentscontrolsfortheSY66lowfrequencyoscillators(LFO),andbasic
ADSRenvelopes.TheLFOandADSRparametersarethemselvespartoftheevent
bussandcanbemodulated.
BreakPoint: AdditionalMultibreakpointenvelopesareprovidedinbipolarformfor
detailedcontrolofsynthesizeroreffectsettings.Theyhavethesameinterfaceasthose
fortheoperatoramplifiers,butsendvaluesintherange1to+1.

Themacroknobscanbeswitchedbetweenunipolarandbipolaroutputdependingon
howyouwanttocontrolaparameter.Unipolarcontrolrangesbetween01andbipolar
controlrangesbetween1and+1.Unipolarcontrolisusefulwhenyouonlyneed
positivevalues.Bipolarcontrolisusefulifyouwanttoaddorsubtractavaluefora
parameter.Beneaththemacroknobsyouwillseeaswitchforunipolarandbipolar
knobs.Theknobsthemselveschangedisplaybasedonthisselectionaswellasthe
outputvalues.

TheX/Ycontrollerallowsonetogeneratecontinuouseventsandtriggergateswiththe
computerpointer.TheXYcontrollerhasswitchesaroundittotriggeroperatorgatesand
makeampandnotechangesforeachaxis.TheXYcontrollercanalsobeusedinthe
eventbussmapperprovidingthreesources:MouseX,MouseYandLeftButton.
Audio:Theaudiopagecontainssettingsfortheexternalaudioinput,envelopefollower,
audiogateandpitchtracker.AudiocomesintoSY66asamonosignalenabledbythe
externalinput.Whenenabled,youcanusetheaudiosignalintheaudiomodulation
matrixforFMorRM,orforadditionalfunctionsontheeventbuss.Youcanusethe
envelopefollowertocreateamodulationsignalbasedontheaudioinputamplitude.The
audiogatecanbeusedtocreatetriggereventswhentheaudioinputcrossesa
thresholdandadditionallyusingafilterifwithinafrequencyrange.Thepitchtracker
canbeusedtocreatedecimalpitch(0127)valuesfromtheaudioinputandsentonthe
eventbusstoarbitrarytargets,ordirectlytothenoteinputsharedbyalloperators.By
combiningtheenvelopefollowerandpitchtracker,youcanplaySY66withyourvoice,
guitarorwithapitchedinput.

OperatorPower: Thisbuttonturnstheoperatoronoroff.Moreoperatorsconsumemoreof
theavailablecpu,sodisableoperatorsnotneededforaparticularsnapshotorpreset.

andalsoadditionalnewwaveforms.Thewaveoperatortypecanbefrequencyandring
modulatedwhichmakesforsomewildandunexpectedresults.
WAVEWave: Selectsthewaveformtobeusedwhentriggered.
OperatorTypeSineFM: Thisistheclassicoperatortypewhereasinewavecanbe
FMmodulatedwithanother.However,theinputcanbeusedforRMaswell.
OperatorTypeNoise: Thistypecannotbeusedasacarrier,butonlyasamodulatoror
playeddirectlyouttobeusedsubtractivelyorwithringmodulation.Itsinclusionis
mostlyformakingdrumandpercussionsoundsandspecialFX.
OperatorTypeFormantOSC: Thisissimilartothesinefm,butincludingaformant
filterforvocallikeresponse.ThisisthereaktorformantoscmodifiedforFM.Thereisa
dedicatedpanelcontrolthatcanbeusedtochangetheformantfrequency.
FormantOSCFmt: Setstheformantfiltercenterfrequency.
OperatorTypeSawFM: ThisisagreatsawoscillatorwithanFMinputthatcanbe
usedforRMaswell.Itcanbeusedwiththeoperatorfiltertoprovidetypicalsubtractive
stylesounds.Usednexttooperatorsinamodulationrelationship,itcanprovidea
differentresponse.
OperatorTriFM: ThisisatriangleoscillatorwithFMorRMinput.Itishereincasethe
sampledtriwaveformsaliasincertainranges.
OperatorTypePulseFM: Thisisapulsefmoscillatorthatincludesadedicatedpanel
controlforpulsewidth.Whenmodulated,pulsewidthcanmakesomecoolpadand
basssounds.
PulseFMPW: Controlsthewaveformpulsewidth.

Level(Lvl): Setsthedirectoutputleveloftheoperator.Iftheopwillonlybeusedfor
modulation,turnitdownandenableinthemodmatrix(seefarbelow).

Pan(Pn): Setstheoperatorpanorama.

Ratio:Setstheharmonicratioinintegersandfinetuneindecimalsovertheplayednote.
Clickingonthelefthandsideoftherationumericdisplaywillchangetheharmonicinteger,and
clickingontherighthandsidewillchangetheharmonicdecimal.Aratioof1meansthe
operatorwillcycleorplayafrequencycorrespondingtotheplayednote.Aratioof2willdouble
thisetc...rangegoesfromzero(nosound)to64.Avalueof.5willhalvethefrequencywhich
makesforcoolbasssoundsandundertones.Valuesunder.5canmakesoundslikeamplitude
modulation.

Fix(value): Setsafixedtuningoffsetfortheoperator.Itmaybeusedtocreatedetuningthat

sound.

Sync: SyncronizesorresetsthetriggeringoftheSineandFormantoperatormodessothatthe
sinealwaysbeginsatavalueandphaseofzero.

Vel/FVel: Theoperatoramplifieroroperatorfiltervelocitysensitivityadjustshowtheopampor
filterwillrespondtotheperformedspeedorvelocityfromamidicontroller.Avalueofzero
meansnoresponseandavalueof1meansmaximumresponsetotheplayedvelocity.

KA/KF: Thekeyboardscalingoftheamplifieroroperatorfiltersetshowtheampwillbebiased
dependingonthenoteplayed.Itessentiallysetsaslopefrom1to+1eitherincreasingthe
outputoflownotes(negativevalues),orincreasingtheoutputofhighnotes(positivevalues).

VS: ThisparameteradjuststhevelocitysensitivityofthetimescalingoftheMultipoint
Envelope.Positivevaluesincreasethespeed(compress)oftheenvelope,whilenegative
valuesslow(expand)thespeed.

KS: ThisparameteradjuststhetimescalingsensitivityoftheMultipointEnvelopetothekeyor
notenumber.

AMP/FILT: Switchesthedisplaybetweenthemultipointenvelopesfortheamplifierandfilter.

MAST: OverridesthepreviousAMP/FILTdisplaytoshowtheMasterFilterEnvelope.Even
thoughthisenvelopedisplayisintheOperator1section,whentheMASTbuttonisenabledthe
envelopeshownisfortheMasterFilterthatalloperatorsgointo.Thevelocityandkeyscaling
sensitivityvaluesarealsoswitchedandpertaintotheMasterFilterEnvelope.

MultipointEnvelopes: Thesesophisticatedenvelopesareconnecteddirectlytotheoperator
amplifierandfilter,havingonlyonepropertythatcanbemodulatedtimescaling.Withthis
envelopeitispossibletohaveanarbitrarynumberofstagesorpoints,levelsandcurvesin
between.Theenvelopecanbesyncedtoincomingmidiclockandlooped,providingforrythmic
patternsorlongrepeatingsections.Thetimescaleinputcanbeusedwiththemapper
modulatorstocompressorexpandthedurationoftheentireenvelope.IftheSYNCbuttonis
enabledtheenvelopegridwillshowdurationsasdivisionsofthecurrenttempo(bpm),andthe
timescalingreceivedwillbequantizedtomultiplesof0.125or1/8thsofthecurrentduration.
Whenthesyncbuttonisdisabled,timescalingwillresultincontinuouschangestothe
envelopesoverallduration.

Themultipointenvelopescomewithbuiltinpresetsforquicksetupandyourowncanbesaved.
Thebasicideaistodoubleclicktomakeanewpoint,orrightclickapointtoremove.The

inputsandeventgenerators(EG)withparameterdestinations.Itallowsforsourcesandtargets
boththeonetomanyandmanytoonemodulationstyles.Forexample,eachmacroknobor
sourcecanbeassignedtomanyparameterswithdifferentamountsanddirections,andeach
parametercanreceiveeventsfrommultiplesources.

Unlikemanysynthesizerswhosestructureandcapabilityislargelydefinedandlimitedbyits
eventmodulationsystem,SY66iscomprehensiveinallowingacreativepersontofreely

TheSY66eventbussutilizesthemultiplexingmethodscontainedinMaxZaglersPartials
FrameworkforReaktor.AllsourcesandtargetsformodulationareindexedinSY66andgiven
uniquenumericalids.Eachmessageintheeventbuss{b}isacombinedmultiplexedid/value
pair.Becausetheidsarenumericalinsteadoftextual,mathandlogiccanbeeasilyusedto
manipulatetargetidsandroutes.Tooptimisecpuusage,aneventroutingsystemisusedto
routemessagestotargetsusingtheleastamountofswitching.Withoutrouting,theentirebuss
wouldbeinbroadcasttopologycausingmanyunnecessaryidcomparisons.Ontheopposite
extreme,afullywiredandswitchedsystemwouldbemostefficient,butflexibilityislostfor
thingslikeonesourcetomanytargets,andarbitrarytargetgroups.TheSY66digitaleventbuss
isacompromisebetweenfullyunswitched(broadcast)andfullyswitched(wired)topologiesthat
givesthemostflexibilitywhileminimizingcpu.Acompletelistingofsourceandtargetidscan
beprovided(800+)foradvancedreaktoruserswhowouldliketocreatecustommodulation
functionsandtechniques.

Allvaluesenteringthebussareinthebipolarrange1to+1andactuponthevaluesfirst
definedbythepanelcontrolelements.Thepanelvaluesaredefaultwithmodulationseither
addingorsubtractingtothisdefaultvalue,dependingontheamountselectedinthemapper
assignmentrow.

EveryparameterdestinationinSY66thatispartoftheeventbusscontainsthreeterminals
throughwhichmodulationcanoccur.Sincemodulatorsarrivingatadestinationmayconflict
andoverrideeachother,threeterminalsareprovidedforeachparameterthatareadded
together.Eachseperatedestinationterminalisenumeratedinthemappersystemallowing
easyselectionofdifferentterminalstoaffordadditionorcombinationofvaluesinsteadofevent
collision.Eachdestinationinthestructurecontainsthesethreeterminalsinamacrothat
combinesthemwiththepanelvalueandendswithasnapshotmodulethatwillclipandrestrict
thefinalvaluewithinanappropriaterangeandstoreandrecallthatcombinedvaluein
snapshots.Thismeansthatthecombinationofapanelandmacroknobvaluewillbestored
andrecalled.

Theeventbussismonophonic,meaningthatwhentheadsrorbreakpointenvelopesareused,
theywillaffectallactivevoicesthesame.Envelopesfortheoperatoramplifiers,filtersandthe
masterfilterenvelopearepolyphonicandnotpartoftheeventbuss.However,theirenvelope
amountsandtimescalingaremodulationdestinations.
