Real Heroes - Show You Care Award. So many times,
we have to report on the bad news that occurs in todays
society. It is our pleasure to be associated with good news
stories. Stories of people who go out of their way, above
the call, to help others, do not always get the attention
they deserve... but today we pause and honor those
individuals.
The staff and families of WBSM News-Talk AM 1420,

out of her way to help others, especially in times of great need.
If you wish to learn how to make the world a little brighter, ask Kassandra Lynn
Gonsalves for a few tips. This talented fifth grader has mastered the unselfish
gift of giving hope to others by giving them her time. Kassandra heard that foster
children had no way to carry their few possessions, so she founded the Good
Night, Sleep Tight program, stuffing decorated pillow cases with comforts and
necessities. In her spare time she dances and helps new students, she spends time
with special needs youngsters, visits nursing homes and animal shelters, and per-
forms for benefit events. But all these activities do not tell the whole story of this
young role models giving spirit.
Strong personal convictions, combined with a willingness to help his school and
community, make Brian Costa a person to celebrate. From his achievements in
academics, his participation in the school choral groups and drama program, and
his work with Teen Talk Line for the YMCA, Brian has not yielded to social pres-
sures to conform. With great dignity and all-encompassing personal warmth, Brian
won the approval of his classmates to be voted 2004 Mr. Whaler. His future neigh-
bors will be fortunate.

Heidi Simms of the John W. Decas Elementary School urges her students to their
full potential, often by involving them in community service learning. Her fourth
grade class engages in inter-generational studies with local nursing home resi-
dents. The children become acquainted, learn residents personal histories and
thank them with plants grown during the plant life-cycle project. Writing with
personal significance, students learn to tell their grandparents stories, then invite
them to a Grandparents Day celebration at which each is spotlighted as the child
reads the narrative. Ms. Simms provides warmth, leadership and creativity, espe-
cially in her use of community resources.

Derek Baptiste would not give up on his West End neighborhood, in spite of its
apparent downward spiral. Instead, he proposed to help revitalize it through the
New Bedford Summer Basketball League at the United Front Homes. The chal-
lenges were great - clean up the court, raise funds for equipment, recruit coaches
and encourage community support. Thanks to Dereks vision, more than 100 youths
have participated at three age levels, and his dream of preserving the rich mixture
of loving family and community values has taken on reality.
