You can use both or both of us to describe things two people have in common:

We're both science-fiction fans.

Both of us are science-fiction fans.


(= I'm a science fiction fan and he's a science fiction fan.)

Use both after the verb be or before other verbs:

We're both science-fiction fans.

We both like going to the movies.

Use both of us as the subject of the verb:

Both of us like going to the movies.

You can also use neither of us to describe two things people have in common. The meaning of
neither of us is already negative, so you don't use a negative verb:

Neither of us was very good at art.


(= I wasn't very good at art, and he wasn't very good at art.)

Use the singular verb form after neither of us.
