formerly the Bao Thien pagoda, which had been built during the Ly dynasty.
St. Joseph's Cathedral bears a remarkable similarity to many of Frances most famous cathedrals. The
domes measure an impressive 64.5 meters in length, and 20.5 meters in width, with two bell towers each
towering more than 30 meters above the top of the structure. Although much of the cathedral has been

11:55 Old Town
Visit Duration: 45 mins
0.3 KM, 5 minutes walking from St. Joseph's Cathedral
Hanoi's Old Town is a historic district in the city center comprised of nearly 40 old-style streets. Traditionally
an area where merchants and artisans sold their wares, the Old Town has seemingly resisted the passage of
time and retained much of its old world charm and flavor. Even today, as the city around it marches on
inexorably toward modernity, the Old Town remains a refreshing throwback to Hanoi's glorious past.
Each of the Old Towns narrow streets is named after the products or services primarily sold by the shops that
line its pavements. Hang Bac for example, is known for its silver products. Hang Ma specializes in
paper-based merchandise, while Hang Gos traders deal mainly in wood products.
There are many other things to do in the Old Town other than shop. Watching the water puppet show is an
absolute must, and the entire family is sure to be mesmerized by the stunning artistic display of wooden
puppets that almost seem to have a life of their own.

Visit Duration: 45 mins
0.3 KM, 4 minutes walking from Ancient House
Bach Ma Temple is considered one of the oldest temples in Hanoi, dating back to the middle of the 11th
century. Located in the citys famous Old Quarter, the temple is located only a few minutes walk away from
many of Hanoi's main tourist attractions.
The temple was built on the orders of King Ly Thai To, who was then the governor of Hanoi. It is also known
among locals as the White Horse Temple due to the fact that the King drew inspiration for its construction
from a white horse, which is thought to be an incarnation of a Vietnamese river god.
According to local accounts, the king saw a vision of the white horse while praying for a solution to the
marshy soil that made it exceedingly difficult to build a fortress on the site. As the horse marked off an area of
the ground with its hooves, the King realized that it was indicating where the fortress should be built. The
horse seemed to have known something that the royal court didnt, as the construction was a success. In

bearing the brunt of the damage. The structure that greets visitors today is largely the result of reconstruction
work that was done during the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the temple remains a remarkable sight, Address: Hang Boum, Hoan Kiem District
