Graphing Project with Desmos, Algebra II

Maneesha Mankad

DESIGNS FROM EQUATIONS PROJECT

Throughout this semester, we will take an in depth look at functions and their graphs. Your
understanding of these families of functions will be critical to your success in this class, as well
as your future studies in mathematics.

For this project, you and your group will demonstrate your knowledge of the basic parent
functions and their transformations with a focus on the linear and quadratic function families as
well as the use of restricted domains and range through your own artistic piece.

Exploratory Activity for Project

1) Go to www.mathinspires.weebly.com and click on Google Classroom on the Algebra II page.

2) Go to the assignment Math Face Intro Activity.
3) Follow instructions on the assignment link.
Who Are You Calling Math Face? Algebra II, Desmos Function Transformation Project

Project Activity: Create a picture using parent functions and their transformations:
1. On a sheet of graph paper (must be turned in), draw x- and y-axes that fill the entire page.
2. Number these axes.
3. Draw a face on these axes, using ONLY straight lines and curves that look like your parent
graphs. Make it interesting!
4. Use at least seven different basic graphs from the class list (you may use more). Using other
equations is also permitted, but these do not count toward the seven needed from the list
above.
5. Use transformations for at least 90 percent of your equations.
6. Use restricted domains (piecewise functions) for at least 80 percent of your equations.
7. You must have a minimum of 15 equations.
8. Use at least one inequality.
9. On a separate sheet of paper, write the equation for each expression or feature that appears in
your face project.
10. Be sure to identify the part of the face represented by that line.
11. State the domain & range of each line. Use interval notation.
12. Your equations must be in point slope and slope intercept form for lines, standard form or
vertex form for parabolas.
13. Projects will be graded on originality, creativity, and attractiveness. Neatness counts!

Here is a list of basic graphs that you will use:

(x, y) point
y = mx + b line
y = c horizontal line
x = c vertical line
y = |x| absolute value
y = x2 parabola
c
y = hyperbola
x

y = x square root (type sqrt to access this function)

x2 + y2 = r2 circle
y = cx exponential

Graphing
Equations
2x + 1 will graph the line y = 2x + 1
x = 4 will graph a vertical line
x2 + y2 = 25 will graph a circle
(2, 5) will graph a point

Inequalities
y 2x + 1 will shade below the line
2x 1 y 2x + 1 will shade between two lines

Restricted domains
2x + 1 {3 < x < 2} will graph a line segment between two x values
2x + 1 {x > 5} will graph a ray

Colors of graphs can be changed by clicking on Edit.
