METHODOLOGY

Interview: The manager was interviewed on the 10th of October. This took place in the human
resource department. The manager was asked 10 questions in a total of 30 minutes. A recorder
was used to gather information and it was written down. The reason for selecting this method
would involve how quick a large amount of information can be received.

Observation: On September 29th, the staff was observed for approximately 25 minutes for three
days with the use of an observation checklist. Items on the list would be checked along with
notes written about it. Information gathered from interview was clarified by carrying out this
observation. This was an effective way of receiving additional information directly from the
department.

REPORT

For the purpose of this research Ross University was selected. Ross University is an astute
medical school established in 1978, located in Picard, Dominica.

This business was selected because it has a large and functional Human Resource Department
which offers a wide range of employment opportunities for individuals such as accountants,
janitors, security guards etc.

The focus of this research was based on the importance of the Human Resource Department, the
factors that contribute to employee turnover and how it may affect the business.

The Human Resource Department is one of the most important departments because it is
responsible for the employees who are employed, and the workers are the most valuable resource
in a business. This department carries out many functions, one of which includes staff welfare.

Staff welfare is an all-inclusive term covering a wide range of facilities that are essential for the
well-being of employees within an organization. This would include ensuring that working
conditions meet legal requirements and encouraging employees to work well. Ross University
executes staff welfare by providing toilet facilities, ergonomic furniture and clean water.
Inadequate maintenance may result in employee turnover.

Employee turnover refers to the number of employees that leave the firm and are replaced within
a given year. Persons may leave the job as a result of lack of job opportunities, lack of
motivation, workplace conflict or migration.

Lack of job opportunities causes employees to feel that they are in so-called "dead-end jobs".
They are not likely to feel inclined to stay for long, especially if new opportunities arise
elsewhere, therefore resulting in employee turnover. Another factor may be lack of motivation.
When employees are not motivated to work, their performance reflects on this. Employees who
are dissatisfied with their jobs are less likely to stay with the company or be productive.

Migration is the long term movement of person from one geographical location to another.
Employees may not be satisfied with their salaries, therefore causing them to migrate to find jobs

which offer better salaries. In addition, workers may migrate to seek healthcare, further their
education or for other personal reasons.

Workplace conflict is one of the possible factors that may contribute to employee turnover. This
may be as a result of the different personalities among co-workers. A breakdown in
communication, harassment and bullying may occur which causes misunderstandings and
employees to feel unwanted, therefore leading to resignation.

Employee turnover affects the business in many ways. One of which included a decrease in
productivity and quality. Persons with the skills and knowledge to fulfill a task may leave the
organization, therefore leaving it in the hands of unskilled or semi-skilled workers who are
unable to carry out the specific tasks. By this, goods and services offered may not be of the best
quality which inevitably reflects bad on the business. It can be expensive to be constantly
replacing employees.

However, employee turnover gives Ross University a chance to reduce an ageing workforce.
They would be able to hire young and vibrant individuals with the ability to work much faster
resulting in more production. New ideas and skills are brought into the organization causing the
quality of goods and services provided to be improved.

One of the issues the research encountered was the postponing of the interview without advance
notice. The manager was absent however another day of research was established.

In conclusion, one of the recommendations the researcher suggested was that employees carry
beepers, therefore improving communication. Also, Ross University could offer online seminars
to improve the quality of the workforce and help employees to further their careers.
