Objective and Orientation

The objectives of Quantity Surveying are to introduce the students with the item-wise and
sequential estimation of different engineering materials required for any kind of Civil
Engineering construction work as well as their costing.

Components

Quantity estimates of items of Civil works e.g. buildings, highways, retaining walls,

Attendance and Participation

Punctual attendance is expected of all students. Also, students should miss a class only if
absolutely necessary; i.e., they should not feel they are entitled to a certain number of missed
classes. It is also further expected that students will be adequately prepared for all classes and
they will participate in them when appropriate.

Academic Offenses

The students and faculty are jointly responsible for the academic standards and reputation of the
university. It is well recognized that intellectual honesty is the basic requirement for
development and acquisition of knowledge. Intellectual honesty is a pre-requisite for continued
membership in the university community.
Forms of intellectual dishonesty are plagiarism, cheating in examinations, aiding and abetting
cheating, and the use of assignment prepared by others, impersonation of another student at an
examination, misrepresentation of information, falsification of academic records, and unruly
behavior with the instructor.

If a student is detected by the instructor in committing the academic offense, it may result in an F
grade for the course or even dismissal of the student from the university.

Evaluation
A several numbers of announced and unannounced examinations and quizzes, project work,
writing assignments, attendance, class participation, and report presentation will be the major
determinants of students grades.

Presentation

There will be a visit of companies by the students outside the university to learn about real life
examples of building construction. In such, a report should be submitted by students from their
observations and findings from the site visit. Site visit reports tend to include some or all of the
following sections: an executive summary, an introduction, a brief overview of the location, a
description of processes, a section where observations and reflections on the site are discussed,
and sometimes recommendations.

Miscellaneous
It is a students responsibility to read text assignments before the scheduled classes. It is also
recommended that students should spend at least three hours (on the average) preparing for each
hour of class time.
