How Well Do You Understand Yourself?
by Clay Stauffer

Its been said before that we are mysteries unto ourselves. The Apostle Paul writes
those famous words to the Romans: I do not understand my own actions, for I do
not do what I want but I do the very thing that I hate. In other words, we often know
what we should do but we fail to do it. Why? Could it be that we need to gain a better
understanding of ourselves? Who we are? What motivates us? What challenges us? What
scares us? How we behave in times of stress and strength? These are all important questions
as we seek to live spiritually and form meaningful relationships with other people.

On Wednesday nights, August 30th and September 6th, we will be having a very special event in Drowota
Hall. Ian Morgan Cron, co-author of The Road Back to You, will be coming to Woodmont to give two special
presentations on the Enneagram. Dinner will be at 5:30 and his talk will begin at 6 pm. The Enneagram is an
ancient personality typing system that helps us better understand ourselves and others. It is over 2000 years old
but it was not written down until the 1970s. It helps us to come to terms with our own personalities and why we
do what we do. Our personality is the way we cope in the world and it often hides our true essence, who God
created us to be. Everybody has one number and it was basically determined by the time we were five years old.
However, you will resonate with one or two other number and may have a hard time determining exactly what
your number is. Here are the NINE PERSONALITY TYPES:

TYPE 1 The Perfectionist Ethical, dedicated and reliable, they are motivated by a desire to live the right way,
improve the world, and avoid fault and blame.
TYPE 2 The Helper Warm, caring, and giving, they are motivated by a need to be loved and needed, and to
avoid acknowledging their own needs.
TYPE 3 The Performer Success oriented, image conscious and wired for productivity, they are motivated by a
need to be (or appear to be) successful and to avoid failure.
TYPE 4 The Romantic Creative, sensitive and moody, they are motivated by a need to be understood,
experience their oversized feelings, and avoid being ordinary.
TYPE 5 The Investigator Analytical, detached, and private, they are motivated by a need to gain knowledge,
conserve energy and avoid relying on others.
TYPE 6 The Loyalist - Committed, practical, and witty, they are worst case scenario thinkers who are motivated
by fear and the need for security.
TYPE 7 The Enthusiast Fun, spontaneous, and adventurous, they are motivated by a need to be happy, to plan
stimulating experiences and to avoid pain.
TYPE 8 The Challenger Commanding, intense, and confrontational, they are motivated by a need to be strong
and avoid feeling weak or vulnerable.
TYPE 9 The Peacemaker Pleasant, laid back, and accommodating, they are motivated by a need to keep the
peace, merge with others, and avoid conflict. (The Road Back To You pp.25-26)

I think we can all admit that we live in a world where people need to understand each other better. We are often
quick to judge and slow to listen. The Enneagram is a tool that can help with that. It will open our eyes in many
relationships and give us a better understanding of ourselves. Join us for these two special nights (Aug. 30th and
Sept. 6th). They should be very enlightening and beneficial!

Blessings,

Sign up for Bread and Honey
by Farrell Mason

After a summer of many adventures with my family, I am excited to return to writing on my spiritual
blog, Bread and Honey! More than ever, I feel called to share my heart, my spiritual journey and
spread hope in any way I can. If this is your first time to hear about Bread and Honey, welcome!
You can visit www.breadandhoneyblog.net and sign up today to receive a weekly dose of hope!

I created Bread and Honey five years ago as a virtual sacred place where you can come to breathe, to be
inspired, to grow spiritually and especially to nourish your soul!

We live in a frenetic world with a 24 hour news reel of darkness: terrorism, racism, gun violence, cancer, depression. The list
of fears is infinite. No wonder we feel anxious, robbed of joy, and constantly thirsting for something more for our souls. We
need sound bites of hope!

My dream continues to be that Bread and Honey would be a spiritual hub of healing: an opportunity to step away from the
world and do a kindness for your mind, your body and especially, your spirit. I am determined to prove that despite the
darkness, the evil and despair in our world and online, I believe that there is more love and light, hope and joy for the taking!
So I hope you will accept Bread and Honey as my weekly gift to your soul.

Every week I will post a new piece of writing that is meant to nurture your faith and expand your inner life, give you hope,
and nourish your mind, body and spirit. Once you are signed up, every Monday morning you will receive in your inbox
an invitation to read the latest post. You can also visit my website and find recipes, a library of spiritual meditations, book
recommendations and audio prayers. You can also follow me on Instagram at BreadandHoneyblog where I post beautiful
quotes and give you a peek into my life: what I am reading, cooking, and praying!

Live and love in hope,

- Farrell
