I want to write briefly about the building blocks of Jyotish. Students of Jyotish may want to save this

HOUSES FROM ANY REFERENCE

There are many many matters mapped to various houses in classics, but the following boils it down
to the core essence. Depending on what the reference one is considering shows, one can derive
additional meanings from this core essence!

Trines of Duty

1st house: Self

5th house: Abilities
9th house: Blessings

Trines of Purpose

2nd house: Resources

6th house: Fighting obstacles
10th house: Accomplishments

Trine of Desire

3rd house: Initiative and energy

7th house: Desires and interactions
11th house: Gains and fullfillment of desires

Trines of Freedom

KARAKAS

Naisargika karakas, chara karakas and sthira karakas are ruled by Creator Brahma, Sustainer Vishnu
and Destroyer Shiva, respectively.

Naisargika karakas show various people in one's life and various aspects of one's own personality,
from the perspective of their inherent nature. For example, Venus shows husband or wife and Sun
shows father. Venus also shows one's sense of happiness and Sun also shows one's will power.

Chara karakas show various people in one's life and various aspects of one's own personality, from
the perspective of their impact on one's work in the world. For example, Amatya Karaka (planet with
the second largest advancement in rasi) shows one's counselors and advisors. He also shows the
aspect of one's personality that informs and decides.

Sthira karakas show various people in one's life and various aspects of one's own personality, from
the perspective of how and when they leave one. For example, Venus shows wife and Jupiter shows
husband. Stronger of Sun and Venus shows father.

YOGAS

Specific combinations in a chart that give specific classes of results. For example, quadrants are
Vishnu sthanas (stations of righteous effort) and trines are Lakshmi sthanas (stations of well-being
and prsperity). When a quadrant lord and a trine lord are conjoined, it is called a Raja yoga. It shows
a confluence between righteous effort and prosperity and shows special success. There are many
such yogas given in classics.

One should remember that these yogas apply in rasi chart and other divisional chart.

DASAS

Dasas divide life into phases, sub-phases etc, based on which pending karmas are more likely to
fructify when. Dasas are found from various references, typically lagna or Moon, by progressing
them through rasis or nakshatras or navamsas or other divisions. Planets or rasis are given
ownership over various phases and sub-phases of life and that helps us identify which pending
karmas are more likely to fructify when.

TRANSITS

Natal chart shows the positions of planets, various lagnas and arudha padas when one is born.
Transit chart shows them at another time of interest. Progression charts shows a new chart by
progressing natal positions based on some formulas.

Relationship between the transit chart and either natal chart or progression chart gives further clues
to which kind of karmas are likely to fructify at the time. This can be combined with dasas to give a
higher level of confidence.

ANNUAL AND MONTHLY CHARTS

There are various annual and monthly charts that throw light on which pending karmas are more
likely to fructify during a year or a month.
Tajaka varshaphala chart or annual solar return chart is cast every year when Sun returns to his natal
tropical position. A monthly chart is cast when Sun enters the same tropical longitude in various
rasis every month.

Annual Tithi Pravesha or annual soli-lunar return chart is cast every year when Sun is in the same
tropical sign as at birth and Moon is at the same angle from Sun as at birth. Monthly Tithi pravesha
chart is cast every month when Moon is at the same angle from Sun (in various rasis) as at birth.

Annual Nakshatra Pravesha or annual lunar return chart is cast every year when Sun is in the same
tropical sign as at birth and Moon returns to his natal sidereal position. Monthly Tithi pravesha chart
is cast every month when Moon returns to his natal sidereal position every month.

These charts show which pending karmas are more likely to fructify in which year/month.

PANCHANGA ELEMENTS

Panchanga or 5 limbs of time throw light on how 5 elements affect time. They are useful in muhurta
(picking auspicious day & time for starting or renewing an effort) and also in timing events in life.

Karana represents the earth element and shows how a specific time is conducive to stability and
solidity on one hand and rigidity on the other.

Tithi (lunar phase day) represents the water element and shows how a specific time is conducive to
harmony, flexibility and sense of belonging on one hand and emotional attachments on the other.

Vaara (weekday) represents the fire element and shows how a specific time is conducive to will
power, taking charge and controlling things on one hand and frustration on the other.

Nakshatra (star) represents the air element and shows how a specific time is conducive to
expansive awareness and empathy on one hand and wavering and ungroundedness on the other.

Yoga represents the space element and shows how a specific time is conducive to clarity of
awareness and things falling in place, on one hand, and clouded awareness on the other.

FREE WILL VS DESTINY

Free will and destiny are the same, with a time lag. Free will of yesterday (past) becomes today's
destiny and free will of today will become tomorrow's (future) destiny.

One reaps what one sows. Free will shows what one sows and destiny shows what one reaps.

One's current destiny is the reaction of Cosmos to how one's free will acted in the past towards
Cosmos. It shows the circumstances surrounding one's experiences and actions, i.e. the set of
constraints under which one interacts with the Cosmos.

Though one's free will is free to experience and do anything, its circumstances often predispose it to
experience the world in a specific manner and act towards the world in a specific manner. It is
possible to resist those predispositions through conscious effort.

REMEDIAL MEASURES

Remedial measures are a way to resist those predispositions. Each planet, rasi or another parameter
shows various things. By consciously picking and embracing specific things shown by it, one may be
able to either avoid or enhance some other things shown by it and likely to fructify during a specific
period in life when that planet dominates.
Contemplating aspects of divinity that are consistent with the nature of a planet and engaging in
selfless acts towards others consistent with the nature of a planet, are some possible examples
(e.g. worshiping Saturn or helping the poor, to "please" Saturn).

Remedial measures work in 2 important ways. These new and powerful actions re-arrange the
karmik pipeline to avoid/enhance the fruits of some undesirable/desriable karmas. Secondly, they
shape how mind currently experiences the world, which in turns affects how one acts now!!

Often new negative karmas one performs are a hasty reaction to current unpleasant experiences
(coming from previous negative actions). Remedial measures can create a state of mind to react
better!
