INVESTIGATION
The Goal
Personal Project, a task where students get to pursue their passion for anything and
make it big. Personal Project is a time where a student can express himself in a way that people
won't make fun of him for what he likes or believes. In this occasion I decided to make my
personal project about something I like to do in my free time and that is bodyboarding. The goal
I created for this task is to teach at least 5 teens how to bodyboard and create a Facebook
page with at least 100 likes where people around the world can learn the techniques and
tricks with out going to my academy. The time I took planning and thinking about this goal
was extremely time consuming and exceptionally hard. It took me lots of hours. This goal is
highly challenging for me because I am a closed person and I only talk with the people I know,
and creating a facebook page where everybody has a chance to see what I said and see the
errors I probably made. I am also positive that teaching five teens how to bodyboard is going to
be challenging because teaching something completely new to people is like teaching a
language to a baby. You need to spend a lot of time with them and have patience, and that is
something that I have very little.
Topic Selection:
Bodyboarding is something very special to me. I have been on a board since I was 6 and
I have not gotten out yet. When I first entered the little theatre when they were just explaining
the personal project and they said, and I quote This is a time to pursue your passion, to enjoy a
school project my brain was just shouting at me BODYBOARDING and I just had to do it. I
chosed to do a academy because what better way to enjoy your passion than teaching
someone how to do it and watch him enjoy it the same as you do. Arriving to this decision of the
Facebook page and the academy was not easy because I had other things in my mind such as
photographing waves or making my own bodyboard and it was difficult to choose only one but
after a few days of just thinking I remember the joy in my surfing teacher when I hit the sea and
grabbed my first ever wave, the joy he had was limitless and I just wanted to feel the same thing
that my teacher felt for me 9 years ago. Thats how I decided to make this topic and this goal.

them to become better but once you know them teaching something to them or telling them
something is very easy.
Global Context:
This project is full of facts and ideas that I did not know when I started to do bodyboard.
The amount of things that I am going to learn from this is going to be extraordinary. One this
that I am going to learn is how to band and connect to people. I know this is not a bodyboarding
skill but this is a skill that every human needs in order to be successful in life. This skill that I am
learning through the classes that I am doing will help me not only while Ido my bodyboarding
class but also when I go out on my own to explore the world, and this technique is something
you never forget. Another thing that I am going to learn that is about the world is how people
feel, and how is the passion of someone going to help another person to pursue the same
passion and help them to become happier. What I mean about this is that I am going to
experience people's different faces and why they put those faces. Also with my Facebook
page I am also going to learn how other people from the world bodyboard and I the teacher is
also going to learn some tips and tricks.
RESEARCH:

Limitations The limitations of this source is that he still
What is the limitations of this source? has a lot to learn as everybody in the world
and he his ability to communicate with
persons are a little bit sloppy due to the fact
that he is still young and doesn't know how to
express himself in the way he wants.
PLANNING
5
The planning stage in the personal project is a crucial stage for your work to be
organized, neat and perfect. This stage is probably the most important stage in the WHOLE
project and if you do not do it or just left it for last you are going to have trouble. To start this
stage I first drafted my three criterions that I was going to use to guide me through this project.
After some revision from my old supervisor, Ms. Jennings I perfected it and know it looks
something like this:
Achievement Descriptor
level
Achievement Descriptor
Level
7-8 Students page is neatly organized and easy to find specific things
Student has 12+ posts on helpful tips and tricks with videos

Criterion C - Amount of learning

classes and explaining how will that help him in his class.
The strand and the descriptors fit perfectly for my project because they touch points that are
challenging for me but will also teach me something that will help me not only for this project but
for my personal life. For example in criterion C. This descriptor from the 7-8 band will help me in
my project because it will show the teachers my process and reflecting skins on the project I did
and it will give evidence of my work. This will also help my personal life because reflecting on
certain things is a skill that I will need in order to enter a good university and to succeed in life.
These three rubrics will help me to pursue my passion for this sport and to pass that passion to
other students. To be honest I haven't changed anything from my criterions because I think they
are reachable and have a challenge. FOR REST OF THE RUBRIC SEE APPENDIX # A-B

The plan seen above was made during the first week of this project. I made my plan this way
because it gives me time to make the action happen and also gives me time to meet with my
supervisor and reflect on what I have done. Creating this plan was not easy but with the help of
my first supervisor it was possible. This plan has gone under some pretty heavy changes such
as date changings, action and deadline changes and splitting the plan in two. I made this
changes because I felt like I needed more time and to be honest sometimes I did not use my
time wisely and I had to adjust my plan for that I could catch up.
My self management skills in this project were pretty consistent and were satisfactory in a way
that any person can view them on my personal blog and my process journey. This posts made
explained how I managed myself in the task for example communication with my students that I
had and how I reacted to them. (For evidence of self management skills see appendix # C).
Some challenges that I had while planning where the fact that the time I went to see a actual
bodyboarding teacher the first 2 times that I went to talk to someone they did not wanted me to
ask them question because they were busy so I had to look for other persons to ask questions
from. Another challenge that I had while planning was that sometimes I did not had enough time
fulfill my goal of that day because to be honest I did not use my time wisely at the start so that
meant I had to change my plan to finish. Apart from those challenges I also had successes such
as my facebook page profesional meeting. The meeting I had with the professional went great
and it did help me a lot to organize and make the page.
9
TAKING ACTION
My Personal Project consists on making a bodyboard academy and making a facebook page
that has over 100 likes (For evidence of Facebook page and Academy see Appendix # C-F).
Reaching the goal of the likes in the facebook page was not easy. At the start I had no likes and
no one read my posts but after some months the likes started to go up.
Choosing how I was going to present my work was not easy and took a lot of time but after
some days of thinking I thought that making a video of one of my classes of bodyboarding and
making/taking screenshots of my facebook page was going to be the best way because
obviously I can't bring an academy to shown to everyone but making a video will give the people
watching a feeling that the are in the class and a sneak peak of everything that we do and at the
same time they can see how I teach my students. Also I thought taking screenshots of the
process of making the facebook page will be a good idea because then people can see the
process of it and how the likes started to build up until my goal. (For evidence of likes building
up see Appendix # G-H).
The global context I chose for this project was Identities and Relationships. I chose this global
context because I believe having a good relationship and knowing the real identity of someone
leads to great friendship and mutual understanding. Being a teacher is not easy, you need to
know how the person feels and acts to certain situations for that you can know exactly how to
talk to him. This is why I chose Identities and Relationships, I chose it because I needed to bond
myself with the students to be able to teach them in a fun way. TO enjoy this passion of
bodyboarding. Presenting my work in a form of a video and facebook page responds to the
global context I chose because each person has its own way of gathering information and with
the facebook page and the video the person watching it can take his time and gather everything
up for them to fully understand it.
When doing this academy and facebook page I had to use my thinking and communication
skills. I used this skills for looking up places to surf where it may help people who are just
starting to learn and other places for advanced surfers. Apart from that I also used the
communication skill to interact with my students and gain trust with them. (For evidence of
thinking and communication skill go to Appendix # C).
At the end I can say that making this academy and facebook page has changed me in a way
that I am know more open to people and more confident about what Ido.
10
REFLECTION
Doing the personal project was an experience that I would like to take again. Learning about my
passion and showing kids the magic that it gives you has shown me a different perspective in
life. My product that was my academy and facebook page gives me a feeling of enjoyment and
love. At the same time that I enjoy showing it it also follows my assessments criterions pretty
well. One of my criterions states that my page is neatly organized and I have 12+ posts on it
(7-8 band). This reflects on my product/outcome because my product was my facebook page
and if you go and see it you can clearly see the amount of posts I have and how organized it is
(For link of Facebook page see Appendix # I). For that criterion I will give myself a 6 because I
do everything of what the criterion says but I could of done better. It's not perfect. Also I marked
myself 6 in the criterion B because my web page is organized, the videos posted are in HD
quality and I almost have the amount of posts needed to achieve that mark. For the criterion A I
gave myself a 6 because according to my 7-8 band it states Student has a variety of places to
surf (3+) and unfortunately I did not take my students to 3 or more places to surf due to that fact
that the third surf spot was to advanced for them but 7-8 requires 3+ surf spots for my students
and I did not reach that. Last but not least in the criterion C the grade that I put myself is a 7. I
put myself this grade because according to the criterion I need to have 6+ handbook entries on
tips on how to make my class better according to classes that I saw from other professional
surfers and I had more than 6 handbook entries not only from tips from classes but other
information such as what happened in my class that day. Leaving aside all the grades, criterions
and work, completing this project has extended my knowledge and understanding of this topic.
All the research and investigation that I had to do in order to complete this made me take a look
at a side of bodyboarding that was not in the light for me. It extended my knowledge of this sport
in a way that I never thought I would need. It showed me new techniques such as the ARS, 180
aerial etc. By just showing the students how to ride a wave and creating my academy it gave me
further understanding in this topic. It showed me an easier way on how to ride a wave, how to
communicate and how to enter better the sea. Going back to my global context that was
Identities and relationships it deepened my understanding in how the people think and express
themselves when meeting new people and getting to know them. Also completing this project
strengthened my identity and relationships as a bodyboarder because it made me have bond
with people that I have never talked to in my lives, it identify me as a leader for them and made
my fear of being shy disappear. At last it made me understand what identity and relationships
really meant. It means how people see you and how you see them. The last thing I want to talk
about is how making this project has deepened my understanding of myself as a IB learner. At
the start I thought I was just a caring, principled and thinker student but while I was making this
project I realized that actually my strengths where in places I never thought I really had such as
Communicator, Risk-Taker and Reflective. These were my strengths because to be able to do a
academy and show kids how to bodyboard you need to communicate with them, make bonds
and inspire them to continue doing this sport. This was not easy for me and I really thought I
couldn't do it but I continued and I became a Risk-Taker. After that I needed to be reflective and
take into account what the students wanted to do in my class so I did and the student enjoy it.
As you can see without those communicative, risk-taker and reflective skills I would not be able
11
to do this academy and show my passion to others. At the end my goal was to teach 5 teens
how to bodyboard and do a facebook page that has over 100 likes and at the end i can say that
I did reach my goal for my facebook page but unfortunately I did not in the part of teaching. At
the start I thought that teaching teens was going to be easy but I did not had the knowledge to
really know because I was never a teacher and I realized that each teen takes different time and
different work in him so I successfully teached 3 students how to bodyboard but not the 5 that
was planned. So to take this to an end How is teaching people bodyboard going to help me
become a better bodyboarder, is it going to change the way I look at bodyboarding because I
am going to become a teacher? It has. It did change the way I looked at bodyboarding and it
did help me become a better bodyboarder because the students also teached things to me.

C
Day 1:
Today I begin my 6 month journey to finish and learn about a passion. I will encounter problems, have fun and be
stressed. I started this by brainstorming about ideas that I liked, after all that I came out with my three top ideas that
were:
Creating a Bow
Designing a Paintball Gun
Doing a Body-board Academy
After I got this three ideas Iresearch about all those three and after I got enough information for the three of them I
decided to do the third one because it was the one that passionated me the most. When I had my final idea I made
up my goal and inquiry question that were:
Goal: Teach at least 5 teens how to bodyboard and create a Facebook page with at least 100 likes where
people around the world can learn the techniques and tricks with out going to my academy.
Question: How is teaching people bodyboard going to help me become a better bodyboarder, is it going to
change the way I look at bodyboarding because I am going to become a teacher?
Day 2:
Today I started to research about body boards and tricks. I started to research about this because I want to
learn this tricks 100% for when I start my academy I can show these tips and tricks to the advance students with no
problem. Also Iresearch about places I can go to show them to surf and I figure out that the best places to learn was
in the Costa Verde, Santa Maria, La Tiza and more. These places are good because there are small beaches
where the waves are not huge and in some of these places that I said the wave does not break with a tube, the top
breaks first making the wave sloppy for learners that are just beginning. When I got these information I went ahead
and investigated on what type of bodyboard should the students get and Ifould a variety of good and cheap boards
that will help them grow.
Day 3:
Today I went to some places of my chosen ones to try to surf on them to see how they were. The places I
found out were the best for beginners was the Costa Verde. This place is very good for beginners because it is not
hard to enter to the place the waves are and the waves are small and do not smash into the water. Another thing that
I found out was that The Tiza and Santa Maria is a place for advanced body boarders because there it is much
harder to enter where the waves are and the waves smash hard into the water and the waves are much bigger than
the Costa Verde. I took some pictures of the waves and me body boarding for that I can show an example of how it is
to my students.
