Definition

Thyrotoxicosis : overproduction of thyroid hormone in blood circulation

Hyperthyroidism : Thyrotoxicosis induced by overactive thyroid gland

Epidemiology

Graves disease persists as the most frequent cause of hyperthyroidism (60-80%) followed by
Toxic adenoma and Multinodular toxic goiter. It is also frequently found in females with a
ratio 8:1 compared to males and apparently manifests in the third and fourth decades of life
