Different Learning styles

Visual

If a student is a visual learner they learn the best by using images, pictures, graphs,

maps, colors and other visuals tools. A good way to teach using visual is to use powerpoints or

the smartboard within the classroom. Having visuals not only help students that are visual

learners but also the ELL students. ELL students may be confused in the classroom, but if there

is visuals along with the lecture they may be able to easily follow along with what is happening

in class along with their peers. The visuals help because they recognize the picture even if they

do not recognize the english words.

Applied

If a student is an applied learner, they learn best by using real objects and situations to

help you figure out the problem they are trying to learn. If you are an applied learner you prefer

to learn based on real life situation rather than just conceptual ideas. If a teacher has a

struggling ELL student in the classroom, and not grasping the concepts, try using real life

practical examples. That may make the lesson or emple more reliable and easy to comprehend.

Verbal

If a student is a verbal learner, they learn best by speaking to others and using their

language skills. A student who is a verbal learner may have trouble mentally picturing things and
works better talking things out in pairs or small groups. One who is a learns best verbally, finds it

very easy to express themselves through writing and speaking. Many English Language

Learners are not verbal learners. This is due to them not able to speak the language in the

classroom fluently therefore can not actively learn through speaking yet.

Social

If a student is a social learner, they learn best working with their fellow classmates or

directly with the teacher. If someone falls under the social learning style, they are people

oriented and prefer to work in groups. Some ways that social learners learn best are through

conversation, listening/talking; often aiming to express their thoughts to others. For an ELL

student a Social learning style may be hard within the classroom. If they do not speak the same

language as their peers they may not be able to properly communicate to them to hold a

conversation.

Pragmatic

If a student is a pragmatic leader, they learn best through fully understanding the task at

hand. The student is typically logical, practical and systematic when completing an assignment.

They prefer to follow set of directions and guides. A pragmatic learner is typically a rule follower

and seeks order. An ELL student would work well with a pragmatic learning style because if they

were getting adjusted to a classroom in a different language having a set of directions or guides

with visuals could be very beneficial to them.
