Roughly nine important steps can be followed if you want to successfully construct a brick
wall.
Firstly, choose a location on level ground and decide on the width and length of your brick
wall. Choose the type of brick and be sure to buy enough of it, as well as extra in case some
bricks get damaged. Stick to the standard type of sever weathering brick which is usually
222mm in length, 106mm in width and 73mm in height.
Secondly, gather all the necessary tools and materials. This includes a spade, string, buckets,
steel tape measure, level, blocking chisel, water compass, mashing hammer, brick trowel,
mortar, and some water.
Thirdly, dig out a trench for the foundation according to the necessary dimensions. Dig until
the soil becomes unyielding. Solidify the trench with a layer of concrete that needs to be
levelled. Mark string guidelines for the wall on the concrete strip. Make sure the concrete is
dry before construction is started.
Start laying the first course of bricks on the layer of mortar and level it. The first course of
bricks can now be covered in mortar and another course. Pull a line of string along the first
layer to ensure that the wall is straight. Lay the remainder of the bricks on the bottom layer,
constantly ensuring that the wall is straight in width and height.
Step six and seven. Continue with the course of brick laying as stated previously. Scrape off
as much excess mortar in the process as possible. File down the brick wall to ensure an even
surface.
The final step would be to seal the wall and mortar with waterproof sealer between the layers
of brick. This will ensure that the wall does not erode over time.
This concludes the nine important steps that you will need to follow to successfully construct
a brick wall.
