The MUS1 monitors voltage, frequency, vector bounce and rotating field in a three-phase network.
The limit values can be preset for the individual application. The device can be applied to different
kinds of networks. The vector-bounce detection can be assigned to phase L1 or L3. The last 100 trip
values will be stored, along with date and time, and indicated on the display.
Its extremely fast response time will effect a virtually instantaneous disconnection of a generating set
from the mains supply (utility), thus avoiding the catastrophic reverse power on an asynchronous
connection of two networks.
Furthermore the MUS1 fulfils the mains protection conditions, required by German Power Authorities
(VDEW).

2.0 METHOD OF OPERATION
The voltage measurement is a true RMS measurement. All three measurement paths are measured
simultaneously and indicated on the display from upwards of >10 V.
The frequency measurement is only active with a measurement voltage greater than 45 V. With a
measurement voltage < 45 V the MUS1 operates with a parameter-set fundamental frequency in the
range of 50 or 60 Hz (parameter no. 13).
By pre-selection of the measuring mode, the measurement can be performed with or without star point
(parameter no. 12). In case of a measurement without star point, the connection of a neutral conductor
is not necessary.
If, in case of a prolonged auxiliary voltage failure 24 h, the indication CLOCK SETTING PLEASE !
(DIP3) appears on the display, then the clock has to be reset. Thereafter the measurement is
indicated again.
3.0 FUNCTIONS
3.1 Commissioning
The MUS1 must be connected according to the terminal allocation (figure 3).
After connection of the auxiliary voltage, the LED "U-AUX. lights. As soon as the measurement
voltages are available, the LEDs L1 L3 light and the measurement starts. The actual measuring
values are indicated on the display (figure 1). Monitoring only takes place with an input voltage greater
than approximately 45 V.
The device is factory pre-set and calibrated, see table under point 6 or factory test protocol.
3.2 Parameterization
For correct adaptation to the particular application, a number of parameters must be set. Before each
commissioning, the clock and the date have to be set. The trip values must be checked and adapted
to the installation if necessary. The set ranges and trip values can be taken from the table under
point 6.
For operating the SELECT-button, the ENTER-RESET-button and of the DIP-switches, the front plate
must be removed.
The real-time clock is buffered and continues running even on auxiliary voltage failure for
approximately 24 hours. Thereafter the date is set to 01.01.00 and the clock is set to 00.00 hours. The
time and the date must be reset now.
The DIP-S3 has to be set to ON in order to adjust the clock. Thereafter the digit to be adjusted can be
selected by means of the ENTER button and modified by means of the SELECT button.
Reset the DIP-S3 to the OFF position to exit the clock-setting mode.
2/9
3.2.2 Parameter setting
Enter the parameter setting mode by switching the DIP-S2 to ON. Exit this mode by switching back to
the OFF position. For leaving this mode it is first necessary to complete the inputs. For greatest
possible data security, all set values are stored in an EEPROM. No buffer battery is required for this.
Within the parameter setting mode the parameters are scrolled through the display by means of the
SELECT button until the value to be modified is reached.
3.2.4 Input
Input or modification of the selected parameter is initiated by the ENTER button. The cursor position is
then changed by the ENTER button as well. Pressing the SELECT button causes an up-counting of
the digit, marked by the cursor. When all cursor positions having been scrolled through, return to the
parameter selection by means of the ENTER button.
3.2.5 Coding
In order to avoid an unauthorized modification, entry to the parameter setting mode can be code-
protected.
Text window:
PARAMETERSELEC.:
CONFIRM WITH ENT
Now all the parameters are protected against unauthorized or accidental modification and can only be
viewed.
If the coding is to be cancelled, the DIP-S2 has to be set to the ON position, the ENTER button kept
pressed and the SELECT button pressed three times.
3.3.0 Tripping
In case one of the values being measured exceeds or falls below the pre-set limits, the corresponding
output relay is activated. The fault signal is indicated on the display and changes back to indication of
measuring values as soon as there is no fault signal present or on pressing the RESET button.
By setting the parameters the device can be pre-configured to process a first-trip or all trip signals.
Example for first-trip: If, for example, under-frequency occurs, then the next trip, for example under-
voltage, is no longer evaluated. In case subsequent trips are released, then also the corresponding
output relay will be activated.
By setting the control input E1 the trip action is blocked. This blocking is occasionally required in order
to bridge switch-on surge effects.
In case a specific reset is required, the DIP-S1 has to be set to the ON position. After a trip action the
MUS1 can be reset again by triggering the input E2 or by pressing the RESET button.
If the DIP-S1 is in the OFF position, the device is automatically reset after running out of a pre-set
period of time (parameter no. 10).
Reset can take place only in case all measuring values have returned to within the reference range
and the pre-set hysteresis is exceeded.
The trip values are stored and indicated on the display, please refer to 4.4.
The MUS 1 is equipped with a toroidal memory (ring buffer), which stores the latest 100 trip events
along with date and time and measuring value.
Indication of the trip memory can be attained by setting the DIP-S4 to the ON position. At first the
latest trip event appears. By pressing the SELECT button, the trip events can be scrolled in a
chronological sequence. By using the ENTER button, the following values can be displayed:
1. cause of trip
2. phase voltage at trip instant
3. frequency at trip instant
4. vector bounce at trip instant
Even in the case of auxiliary voltage failure the content of the trip memory is kept for approximately 24
hours.
If the content of the trip memory has to be deleted, the DIP-S4 must be set to the ON position and
both buttons pressed simultaneously for 5 seconds.
The MUS 1 has the facility to check the rotating field after measuring voltage failure and enables the
measurement only on a right-turning rotating field. The right-turning rotating field is indicated by the
LED. The relay A6 is energized only on a correctly rotating field. If no right-turning rotating field was
present, this must always be reset by means of the RESET- button.
The rotating field detection can be de-activated as well (parameter no. 17). In case the rotating field
detection is active, it always affects the output relay A6, independently of A6 parameter setting.
Three different settings are available for the vector bounce detection (parameter no. 16):
1. With measurement on L1 a strong harmonic filter is used. The response accuracy is approx. 1.
2. With measurement on L3 a weak harmonic filter is used. The response accuracy is approx. 0.5.
3. If the combination of L1 and L3 has been selected, the harmonics are strongly filtered and the
response accuracy is below 0.5.
If the vector bounce detection is not desired, the response value of vector bounce has to be set to 0.
4/9
3.3.5 Fault signals
The relay output A6 can be pre-selected either for common fault signal or for MUS 1 O.K.
(BETRIEBSMELDUNG) signal (parameter no. 15). If the common fault signal has been
parameterized, the relay is de-energized along with the first trip event and remains in this position as
long as the event persists. In case of MUS1 O.K. (BETRIEBSMELDUNG) signal, the relay is
energized when the voltage is connected to the device and the measurement has begun.
If the rotating field detection is active, the relay A6 is energized only when there is a correct rotating
field.
If the SELECT (WAHL) button is no longer pressed, then the standard display will return after a time-
out period of 10 s.
