Lancaster points out. Its largely by appointment only, but many chateaux have
a nice relationship with AmaWaterways and would do special things and make
accommodations for our passengers. This opened-up doors that would have been
closed if we were on our own.
Ashore in Cte de Bourg, Scott Steingraber shared Kriselle wines with locals at

Rather than trying to emulate Italian Montepulcianos, Nenow applies a variety of

She has experience working in Italy but not with Montepulciano. I worked

more of a cool climate area. I worked mostly with whites but I did spend quite a
bit of time in Tuscany and in the town of Montepulciano, but thats not where the

Ive never had anything from Brandborg that wasnt stellar.

ROXYANN WINERY
ROGUE VALLEY

ROXYANN WINERY was originally the pear

Hillcrest Orchard. But Jack Day, grandson of
the Seattle businessman who became owner
and manager of Hillcrest in 1908, had other
ideas. Day planted wine grapes on 20 acres of

shallow clay soils are perfect for Bordeaux

Although yoga retreats arent new to the valley, hosting them at wineries is a
somewhat new idea. Prior to closing their tasting room this year, Trium Winery
in Talent was one of the very first to offer on-site yoga classes. For Ashland-area
yoga enthusiasts, Belle Fiore Winery has planned yoga events this fall and is hoping
they become regular monthly events as is the case at DANCIN. Also new this fall,
Grable will be hosting one-day mindfulness yoga retreats at EdenVale Winery
starting in late September.
With options for single sessions or full-day retreats, and beginner to expert
level yoga, Southern Oregon offers it all. Grable says, I love that yoga at wineries
attracts a blend of seasoned yoga practitioners along with students who have
never practiced. Some regularly attend monthly sessions while others come as an
occasional treat. In the past, there have been couples that meet their friends at the
events, women who come from nearby towns for a day out with friends, and even
parents who bring their teenagers, who enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage!
Having completed her yoga class at DANCIN, Townsley sips her wine and reflects,
Practicing yoga together with others provides a sense of community, connection
and play. That fun, communal spirit just naturally carries over when sitting down
together for a wine tasting. The whole experience becomes a social event full of good
conversation with old and new friends in the most perfect spot imaginable!

The programs are structured for distance learning. Weekly homework

hands-on learning component represents the most valuable part of the program.
In order to get students hands-on experience, SOWI partners with local
vineyards and wineries, which generously let students handle, mishandle and

Southern Oregon Wine Industry Updates

Vince Vidrine has taken the reins as Winemaker. Owners Doug & Dionne Irvine and Duane & Kelly Roberts
brought Vidrine to the Rogue Valley where the winery specializes in complex, balanced and elegant Pinot
Noir and Chardonnay. Most recently, Vince was the Associate Winemaker at critically acclaimed Domaine
Serene Winery in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Im delighted we were able to add someone with Vinces
Irvine & Roberts Winemaker Vince Vidrine range of winemaking experience to our team, said Irvine and Roberts Managing Director, Michael Donovan,
adding that, The appointment was the culmination of a five-month search which screened candidates from
around the world to find the best person who shared our deep passion for making world-class Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay. Vidrines educational background includes earning a degree from Oregon State University,
where he was the first student to graduate from OSU with a degree in Enology and Viticulture. He joined the
team just in time for the opening of the new tasting room and winery in July.

Ashley Campanellas Pear Cider Wins Gold

EdenVale Winery winemaker Ashley Campanella scored big with her new line of pear ciders at the
recent Portland International Cider Cup, held in June. She took home a gold medal for her Eden Valley
Orchard Pear House Cider, one of only eight gold medals awarded from over 165 entrants from the
EdenVale Winemaker Ashley Campanella Pacific Northwest and British Columbia. What makes the award even more remarkable is that this was her
first vintage! All fruit was sourced from the orchards at the historic Voorhies Mansion site, enabling her
to utilize her on-site winemaking facilities and further utilize the farmland. In addition to the Portland
victory, her pear cider also received a Silver medal at the Great Lakes International Cider and Perry
Competition, where more than 1200 ciders were submitted from around the world.

Greg Jones Leaves SOU for Linfield College

After 20 years at Southern Oregon University, Professor Greg Jones is the new director of Linfield Colleges wine
education program. Wine Business Monthly named Jones a Top 50 Wine Industry Leaders for his work as one of
the wine worlds leading climate researchers. Linfield offers an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree in wine studies
and is working toward a wine and sustainable systems major. Jones took over August 15, replacing founding
Greg Jones director Ellen Brittan who returned to Brittan Vineyards to work alongside her winemaking husband. Jones is
considered the ideal choice for the post and one of the most highly respected scientists in the field today. Jones,
who shares his latest research with winemakers, growers and fellow scientists from around the world, has vast
knowledge of wine, science, government regulations and bureaucracy. Although industry insiders say its a loss
for Southern Oregon, having Greg in-state is the next best scenario.

Trium Tasting Room Closes

After 30 years, Laura Lotspeich, the owner of Trium Wines, a well-respected wine brand, decided to retire
and leave her children to take over the vineyard operations. The tasting room on Rapp Road in Talent has
closed, providing time for her to travel and spend more time enjoying life. The family-owned Pheasant Hill
Vineyard will continue selling fruit to top wineries and to be owned and operated by the next generation
under the direction of her youngest son, Dustin Lotspeich. After her husband, Kurt, passed away, Laura
noted, Without his partnership, the winery has lost some of the allurethis industry requires a passion
Trium Wines Owner Laura Lotspeich for and an obsession with quality and unrelenting care. It is time for me to pass the torch on and enjoy the
results of our years of following that obsession.

Simple Machine Opens Tasting Room

Well-known winemaker Brian Denner and his life/business partner Clea Arthur have opened a new tasting
room to showcase their brand, Simple Machine in Talent at 717 S. Pacific Highway. Since moving to the
Rogue Valley in 2010, Denner has worked for Pallet Wine, Agate Ridge Winery and DANCIN Vineyards.
With a background in business and banking, Clea Arthur will oversee the new tasting room operations
as well as the relocation of the Simple Machine winemaking facilities to the Talent site. Open noon-6pm,

concrete floors. Denner will continue producing small lots of syrah, grenache, pinot noir, viognier and
