Lancaster points out. Its largely by appointment only, but many chateaux have
a nice relationship with AmaWaterways and would do special things and make
accommodations for our passengers. This opened-up doors that would have been
closed if we were on our own.
Ashore in Cte de Bourg, Scott Steingraber shared Kriselle wines with locals at
a village wine party. He found many, especially the younger generation, were in
tune with the world of wine outside their borders and well-versed in Oregon wine
production. Only occasionally did he need to explain US west coast geography and

Village of Saint Emilion Bicycles at the ready on AmaDolce took the cruise with no prior experience of Bordeaux. They loved discovering this
world-renowned wine region while spending time with Kriselle comrades. Most
memorable for Rosie was Saint-milion, with its limestone buildings and enormous
underground spaces created when building blocks were carved out. Below a 53-meter
bell-tower is the subterranean Monolithic Church, built over 300 years, beginning
in the 9th century by successive generations of monks. For Dave, a highlight was
the wisteria-clad Chateau de la Rivire in Fronsac, a splendid limestone structure
with immense caves devoted to wine storage. When tasting the French and Oregon
Bordeaux varietals side-by-side, the couple purposely did so without knowing which
was which, and found they preferred the product of their local winery.
Lancaster sums up the Bordeaux experience, noting, We enjoyed this

Although yoga retreats arent new to the valley, hosting them at wineries is a
somewhat new idea. Prior to closing their tasting room this year, Trium Winery
in Talent was one of the very first to offer on-site yoga classes. For Ashland-area
yoga enthusiasts, Belle Fiore Winery has planned yoga events this fall and is hoping
they become regular monthly events as is the case at DANCIN. Also new this fall,
Grable will be hosting one-day mindfulness yoga retreats at EdenVale Winery
starting in late September.
With options for single sessions or full-day retreats, and beginner to expert
level yoga, Southern Oregon offers it all. Grable says, I love that yoga at wineries
attracts a blend of seasoned yoga practitioners along with students who have
never practiced. Some regularly attend monthly sessions while others come as an
occasional treat. In the past, there have been couples that meet their friends at the
events, women who come from nearby towns for a day out with friends, and even
parents who bring their teenagers, who enjoy a non-alcoholic beverage!
Having completed her yoga class at DANCIN, Townsley sips her wine and reflects,
Practicing yoga together with others provides a sense of community, connection
and play. That fun, communal spirit just naturally carries over when sitting down
together for a wine tasting. The whole experience becomes a social event full of good
conversation with old and new friends in the most perfect spot imaginable!

SOWI also boasts a state-of-the-art winery, with the ability to make 3,000 cases of
wine per year. The facility also includes a 2-acre working vineyard, with additional
acreage in the works.
Geared toward the nontraditional student, SOWI offers a number of different
academic paths. Theres a two-year degree track resulting in a Viticulture &

and Pathway Certificate for a Wine Marketing Assistant.
The programs are structured for distance learning. Weekly homework
assignments and quizzes are conducted online and each class includes a lab
component, which meets on campus four or five times each semester. For me, this
hands-on learning component represents the most valuable part of the program.
In order to get students hands-on experience, SOWI partners with local
vineyards and wineries, which generously let students handle, mishandle and
manhandle their vines and equipment. Ive bottled at Melrose Vineyards and

students study the effects of various diseases like Phylloxera, Powdery Mildew, and

Vince Vidrine has taken the reins as Winemaker. Owners Doug & Dionne Irvine and Duane & Kelly Roberts

Serene Winery in the Willamette Valley, Oregon. Im delighted we were able to add someone with Vinces
Irvine & Roberts Winemaker Vince Vidrine range of winemaking experience to our team, said Irvine and Roberts Managing Director, Michael Donovan,
adding that, The appointment was the culmination of a five-month search which screened candidates from
around the world to find the best person who shared our deep passion for making world-class Pinot Noir
and Chardonnay. Vidrines educational background includes earning a degree from Oregon State University,
where he was the first student to graduate from OSU with a degree in Enology and Viticulture. He joined the
team just in time for the opening of the new tasting room and winery in July.
