Summer 2018-Present
The department awards three one-year research fellowships to rising
fourth-year Rhetoric & Writing PhD students. These fellowships allow
students to devote full-time energies to completing their research and
conducting a substantial academic job search. Applications are evaluated
by the Rhetoric & Writing doctoral faculty and awards are merit-based.

Fall 2016-Spring 2018
Mentored both first-year and returning teaching associates in the General
Studies Writing program, takes part in forming programmatic identity and
policy, hosts workshop sessions and weekly small group meetings,
substitutes for teaching associates, conducts teaching observations of
mentees and is observed by teaching associates.

ENGL 104: College Writing I: Introduction to Academic Writing (online)


This course emphasizes writing processes appropriate for narrative,
analytical, and argumentative essays. The course helps students to
express their own ideas in lively prose that conforms to conventional
standards of style and usage. Some of the writing assignments will require
responses to assigned readings or other texts (potentially including non-
print media), but the focus throughout most of the course remains on each
student's expression of his/her own ideas.

ENGL 145: College and Professional Reading (online)


This course is designed to help students develop vocabulary and
comprehension skills appropriate for university- and professional-level
reading.

ENIN 430: Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers (face-to-face)


This class is designed to help advanced ESL students improve their
English communication skills, especially in the areas of speaking and
listening. Students present speeches, as well as participate in group
discussions and problem-solving tasks. Course work may also involve
interaction with American students in a classroom setting. Pronunciation
techniques are reviewed.

ENIN 450: Writing Review for Non-Native Speakers I (face-to-face)


This writing course is designed to prepare non-native speakers of English
for composing academic tasks. The course will stress the use of the
writing process by having students compose a formal informative research
paper. Emphasis is placed on MLA documentation. Assignments will
develop students' analytical and critical thinking skills.

ENIN 490: Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers (face-to-face)


In this composition course, students develop their writing skills to meet
typical graduate-level academic expectations. Assignments include writing
research papers using primary and secondary sources with appropriate
APA documentation.

ENGL 106: College Writing II: Academic Writing and Research


(face-to-face; online)
This course introduces students to writing processes and prose
conventions common to many academic disciplines, and it provides
opportunities for students to participate in one or more of the ongoing
conversations in particular communities of writers. The course
emphasizes analytic and persuasive writing based on critical reading of
nonfiction prose. At least one system of formal documentation is covered.
