Color Scheme and Harmony!

!
Color is used in a variety of ways, we are constantly receiving
messages from the world around us because color reaches out to
touch everything!
!
!
Color happens when wave
lengths of light hit an object and
reflect off of it into our eye. Our
eye receives the light and
communicates it to our brain
building the perceived world
around us.
!
!
This means color isnt actually apart of an object, what we see is
the color of light bouncing off of it while the other rays of light get
absorbed.
!

!
The psychology of color: the effects of color on human behavior
and emotion.
!
Can you think of different ways colors make you feel?

!
Each individual color can bring up emotions for someone. Have
you ever felt red hot or cool blue? Has green made you smell
grass or has yellow made you happy?
!
Color often is one of the star components to setting the mood for
an art piece.
!
But how can you use it?
!
Anyway you want to of course! But here are some techniques that
will help you begin to think of ways to communicate through color.
!

!
Color Harmony: Theory of putting colors together in a manner
that is harmonious to the eye (pleasing/unified)
!
To achieve color harmony we use our own intuition and color
schemes
!
Color Schemes: Combinations of color from the color wheel.
!
Complimentary color scheme: Colors that are opposite each
other on the color wheel. This creates high contrast in the design.
Split Complimentary color scheme: This consists of a base
color and the colors on each side of its compliment. This
produces strong contrast but with less intensity than
complimentary color scheme.

Square color scheme: All four colors chosen are evenly spaced
on the wheel. Works well when one is allowed dominance over
others.
Rectangle (tetradic) color scheme: This uses four colors from
the wheel that are arranged in complimentary pares, creates a
vibrant feel.

Triadic color scheme: Uses colors evenly spaced on the color
wheel. Tends to be vibrant, good to have one dominate color then
others used as accents.
!
Analogous color scheme: Colors that are next to each other on
the color wheel. Often found in nature and pleasing to the eye.

!
Monochromatic color scheme: All of the colors of a single hue.
More subtle due to lack of contrast.
