Lesson Title Lesson 1: What is Motion?
Grade Level Pre-K special Concepts(s) Understand the meaning of push and
needs Targeted pull
Performance Expectation Four-year-olds have developed enough vocabulary to explain how
objects move and act. They will try many different ways of manipulating objects and can tell you
how that changes their motion.

Practice (Content)

Planning and carrying out SC4.4b Investigates and Cause and effect: Mechanism
investigations describes different types or and explanation
speeds of motion.

Georgia Performance Standards - SC4.4b Investigates and describes different types or speeds
of motion.

Safety Considerations Do not try to pull heavy items off of tables or desks.

The Learning Plan

ENGAGE: Tell the students that I want to change the location of a table in the classroom. I will
need their help to do so. The students will help me push and pull at the table to change its
location.

EXPLORE:
I will ask different questions such as, Can objects move on their own? (Can use
example using a chair and needing to move it), and then, I wonder the different ways we
can make objects move? (Write this question on chart paper/board).
Tell them they are going to investigate this question using different objects around the
room.
Send them off to investigate this question.
Remind them they need to be safe and can work with others.
During this time observe and guide the students by asking questions that will further their
learning (i.e. I see you are trying to pull that tub of crayons, what other motion can you use to
make it move?).

EXPLAIN:

Gather students back up after a few minutes.

Again pose the question, I wonder the different ways we can make objects move?
Have students share/explain some of the ways they were able to move objects, or how
objects move.
Write down key words they say such as walk, run, drop, lift, push, pull, drag, kick, bump,
roll, slide, bounce, etc. on another chart labeled How Objects Are Moved.
Read the book Motion, by Darlene R. Stille.

EXTEND:

Give the students a blank white piece of paper and a pencil.

Have them go back out into the space (classroom, gym, playground) you are using and
have them draw an object and the way that it moves.
Encourage them to label with words on the charts.
Bring them back together to let the students share their findings with their peers.
EVALUATE: Assessment will be through classroom discussions, exploration observations, and
sharing findings with peers.
Title of the Lesson: Lesson 1: What is push and pull?
Lesson Logistics/Materials:
There are five students with one lead teacher and two teacher assistants. The higher
functioning students will go with the teacher assistants and lower functioning students
will go with lead teacher.
Visual support of sentence strips with visuals that say (Child name) push/pull a ------
Large paper pad/ or smartboard to draw pictures of objects student suggest
Visuals ready for the actions words walk, run, drop, lift, push, pull, drag, kick, bump, roll,
slide and bounce.
Plain white paper and crayons.

Motion book by Darlen R. Stillie

visualOpening/Hook/Initial Focus: <How will you ENGAGE students? How will you connect
to prior knowledge and previous lessons/content?>

Read My truck is stuck by Daniel Kirk. This is a book about a trucks wheel that gets stuck in a
hole. The drivers of the truck stop several other people with their different vehicles (car, bus,
moving van, jeep, and a towing truck). All these vehicles are hooked to the truck and they pull
and pull to get the stuck truck.

Work Session:
Closing:

each student will be given an object and then given the direction to push and then pull.

<How will you close the class period? How will you summarize the days learning and tie
concepts together? How will you EVALUATE your students understanding?>
