Chapter 8
Conclusion and Recommendations
8.1 Conclusion

In our country, there are many ways of transportations such as road,

rail-way and inland water transport. Among them, Inland Water Transport is
playing an important role in economy. Ayeyarwaddy River is mainly used for
Inland Water Transport. But the depth of Ayeyarwaddy River is very shallow
in summer season. So large self propelled vessels cannot trade along the
river during the summer season. Only Inland Tug and Barge trains can carry
cargo instead of other self propelled vessels and passenger ships operating
along the Ayeyarwaddy River. Unlike the other ships is that it can operate in
summer at 1 m draft. So using barge train for transportation in Ayeyarwaddy
River is the best way from point of transportation view.
But some of the tug and barge train are very old. Some cant be used.
So local design should be upgraded to be more feasible and cargo capacity.
Moreover, new technology such as Inter-barge with RO-RO technology
should be learned and integrated to our transportation system.
This design is performed with the aid of Maxsurf and Tribon
Software. The results are checked by the required respective criteria. In this
design, authors specially performed the detail calculation of midship section
modulus and scantlings. And then, welding schedule has been considered.
For maneuverability, appropriate rudder design and necessary power for
steering system have been chosen.
In shallow draft tug and barge train system, the required maximum
thrust is very important. To generate this maximum thrust, the most
important factor is the depth of waterway effect. So the resistance, speed and
required power is considered in the waterway affecting this depth effect. And
94

then, in shallow depth of water, the effective tunnel stern and nozzle is
designed to get the good thrust.
Therefore, our project is intended to be a part of Inland Tug and Barge
Train system for inland waterway transportation.

8.2 Recommendations
Inland Tug and Barge train is designed to implement the requirement
of Inland Water Transport. The authors faced many difficulties to design the
tug and barge train because there is tunnel stern and we dont have enough
knowledge about the tunnel stern. And then, Nozzle design is hardly used in
Inland Water Transport now. But this design is considered to be a feasible
and effective design.
Center of gravity can be obtained from the inclination test. Resistance
data should be predicted from model tests in towing tank. There are many
limitations for the tests due to cost and time. So other data could not be got
about the tests to predict the accurate results. For the resistance prediction,
we use the Howes equation which is obtained from the many model tests
and tug movements.
In the thesis, framing system and welding procedure are not detail
because there are many needs of our knowledge and experience. And only
pushing knees are attached to the tug boat to push the barge train because it
is intended to use for inland water way and only to push. Actually, it should
be designed the tug which is able to operate in pull and push condition. For
this type of ship, it is necessary to consider the towing winch, hawser winch,
towing hook, towing bitts and so on.
We recommend that the design can be used as a part of Inland Water
Transport. And we also recommend that our design can be used as an
appropriate reference for those who would like to built or construct the Tug
and Barge train or something for Inland Water Transport.
95

To produce about 10 ft scale model with engine and propeller, the

estimated cost is about 1000,000 kyats(one million). So it could not be
performed due to limits of cost and time.
Our design is not a perfect one. So, we need to improve this design to
become perfect. To execute this goal, we are not the only team to be able this
goal. So we warmly invite all technicians, economics who can accept and
share to our goal. We are not satisfied in framing and welding procedure
assessment of tug because we can only give our approach to only initial
assessment. Then, it is also recommended that the shafting system and
shafting arrangement can continue the study on the propulsion consideration
in this thesis. But challenges from nature are not limited. Therefore, we will
continue our study in welding and framing system of tug and by testing in
towing tank and maneuvering system is also recommended for those who
would like to apply.
