Statics of Rigid Bodies

Problem Set 1: Fundamental Concepts

1. For the force in the figure, determine the rectangular

components in the u and v if = 20

2. For the force P in the figure determine the components

' and ) if the former is directed 80 from the
horizontal and the latter 20 to the same reference
axis. Force P = 10 kN is acting at a given angle of
60 from the axis.

3. A block shown in the figure is resting on the incline

of slope 5:12. It is subjected to a force = 200 kN on
a slope 3:4. Determine the rectangular components of
the force in (a) the horizontal and vertical direction,
and (b) in the direction parallel and perpendicular to
the incline.

horizontal and vertical components of each force.

5. For the force in the figure, determine the rectangular

components in the , , and directions.

6. A boom AC designed to lift a load W is supported by

a ball-and-socket joint at C and by cables BE and AD.
Due to the load W, the force multiplier of the tensile
force, T, acting in the cable BE is 100 N per meter.

y, and z axes.

clockwise moment of 600 N-m about point A and a
counterclockwise moment of 300 Nm about B.
Determine the moment of the force about point O.

9. For the force system shown in the figure determine the

moment of the force system about point B(10, -10) if
the coordinates are in meter.

through points A(24, 0, 0) and B(0, 8, 12), the second line passing through points C(16, -6, 0) and D(0, 0, 12).
